Upton's first ever Fancy Dress Festival was an absolute Joy! Local Man Kris Swift managed to pull off a fabulously simple, free event just by rallying local troops with a call to don a costume and celebrate our lovely community ‘bonkersly’ British fashion. Shops were full, moods were lifted and the pubs and Riverside were bustling with good natured banter and a lot of laughing. For me, the best part was watching it unfold, from a few traders unlocking Upton Times - July 2021 - Issue 3 9 - 12th June 2021 shops dressed up and praying it wasn't 'just them' to seeing more and more people emerge. In fact I'm sure many costumes were created on the day after previously reticent locals decided it did in fact, look like (ridiculous) fun. My favourite costumes were the chap that turned a mobility scooter into a Pirate Ship, King Arthur (of course!) and the Plague Doctor! All in all, it was a successful, brilliant day and reminded me very much of the early days of Catherine the Upton Jazz Festival. Garden Diary He writes with enthusiasm and a wealth of experience. You know e voice... This compact (pocket sized) book provides As featured on BBC Hereford & Worcester Radio advice month by month on the jobs gardeners need to do. These tasks include: seed sowing, looking after lawns, roses, growing fruit, vegetables, bedding plants, shrubs and also hanging baskets. Advice on choosing compost, feeding plants and where to plant the right shrub in the right situation is excellent. There is also advice on pond care, how to attract wild–life and care for house plants. For such a small publication it is amazingly comprehensive. Reg’s pocket sized book comes along with me to the garden centre where I am often phased by the choice of plants and horticultural supplements (fertilizers, pesticides, composts, Reg Moule’s etc.) on offer. His handbook concisely informs overwhelmed amateur gardeners, like myself, in clear terms without being over technical. I found the information in this mini handbook inspirational, reassuring and certainly useful in £10 helping me plan this year’s garden and Designed to be a allotment activity.
