Bob Dylan's Life
Bob Dylan's Life Robert Allen Zimmerman born May 24 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota known by the pseudonym of Bob Dylan, was an American singer, song-writer, musician and author. He is an influential figure in popular music and culture. He became a reluctant « voice of a generation » when he moved to New York in the 1961 where he wrote songs like « Blowin' in the Wind » and « The Times Are a-Changin’ ». Those songs were to become anthems for Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement. His recording career goes on for more than fifty years and he explored many musical genres from folk, blues, country to gospel, rock and roll … He recorded 38 studio albums, starting with Bob Dylan (1968) and still records songs today. Dylan's lyrics contain political, social, philosophical and literary influences and over the years he defied pop music conventions. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards and harmonica. He published his album on Columbia Records and Asylum Records. Since 1994, he also published seven books of drawings and paintings. As a musician, he sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He received many awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award and many other prizes such as an NME Award. Nowadays Dylan still receives huge recognition: in 2012 the President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature « for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition ». -

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Simeon Booker PERSON Booker, Simeon, 1918- Alternative Names: Simeon Booker; Simeon Booker, Jr. Life Dates: August 27, 1918-December 10, 2017 Place of Birth: Baltimore, Maryland, USA Residence: Washington, DC Occupations: Magazine Reporter; Newspaper Reporter Biographical Note Magazine and newspaper reporter Simeon Saunders Booker, Jr. was born on August 27, 1918, in Baltimore, Maryland to Roberta Waring and Simeon Saunders Booker, Sr., a YMCA director and minister. After his family moved to Youngstown, Ohio, Booker became interested in journalism through a family friend, Carl Murphy, the owner and operator of Baltimore's The Afro American Newspapers. In 1942, after receiving his B.A. degree in English from Virginia Union his B.A. degree in English from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Booker took a job at the The Afro American Newspapers as a young reporter. In 1945, he moved back to Ohio to work for the Call and Post. Five years later, Booker was the recipient of the Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University to study journalism and develop his talent as a reporter. After leaving Harvard in 1951, Booker became the first full- time black reporter at The Washington Post. In 1954, Booker was hired by the Johnson Publishing Company to report on current events in its weekly digest, Jet. In 1955, Booker helped to redefine the role of Jet and the entire Civil Rights Movement with his famous coverage of the Emmett Till murder and trial, turning an all too familiar event in the Deep South into a national tragedy that united the black community. -

For this thesis, the brand of focus is FUBU, for us by us, a 90’s era streetweAr brand that is a product of New York City hip-hop culture. His father was killed in a sawmill accident when he was 8, and his OHN H. JOHNSON, who borrowed $500 on his mother’s furniture and created a publishing mother, who later married James Williams, became the dominant force in his life. “She Jand cosmetics empire that changed the color and content of American media, died Monday, believed in me and taught me to believe in myself,” he said later. “She taught me to dream, August 8, at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was 87. to dare and to never give up.” There was no Black high school in Arkansas City at that time, The founder and publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines and the chairman of Johnson and Gertrude Johnson Williams, who was the embodiment of the strong Black mother who Publishing Company, Inc. and Fashion Fair Cosmetics succumbed on the 60th anniver- can’t be blocked or stopped by anything, decided to take her son to Chicago where he could sary of Ebony magazine, which, under his leadership, has been the largest Black-owned mag- get a good education. Kellogg Foundation and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors issued a report on philanthropy that reported what to many was a startling fact but reflected what those of us on the ground already knew. Each year, the report said, Black donors give away 25 percent more of their incomes than White donors. Nearly two-thirds of Black households make donations, worth a total of about $11 billion a year. “African Americans have been very uncomfortable with the title of philanthropist,” Judy Belk, senior vice president of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, told Reuters news service. “If you don’t see role models who look like you when people start talking about issues related to philanthropy, you start believing, ‘Hey, maybe I’m not a philanthropist.’” That’s why Bridge Philanthropic Consultants felt it was critical to release 12 Top Pioneers of Black Philanthropy as its way to commemorate Black History Month. Black philanthropy has always existed. But Blacks were brought to America as slaves, were obstructed from achieving the American dream after emancipation by systemic racism, and have seen their philanthropic achievements receive little to no attention outside their own community.
