P. Inskipp and J. T. R. Sharrock on behalf of the BOU Records Committee and 'British Birds' n a previous paper [Brit. Birds 81: 355-377; Ibis 130: Supplement), the IBritish Ornithologists' Union's Records Committee put forward proposals (based on groundwork by the late P. J. Grant, TPI and JTRS) for revising the names of birds on the West Palearctic list and invited comments and counter­ proposals from the world's English-speaking ornithologists. Over 200 people responded, with suggestions and mostly constructive criticism. In December 1990, a Round Table Discussion on the world standardisation of English names was convened by P. William Smith at the XX International Ornithological Congress held in Christchurch, New Zealand. As a result, a Working Group on English names was officially formed, under the auspices of the IOC and the chairmanship of Burt L. Monroe Jr, with the remit from the IOC to make proposals for a single list of standardised English names for the world's birds. It was agreed that the base-line for these names should be those in the recently published book, Distribution and Taxonomy of Birds of the \lirit. Bird* 85: 263-290, Jura- 1992| 263 264 English names of West Pakarctic birds World (1990) by Charles G. Sibley & Burt L. Monroe Jr, which had benefited from advice given by an international group of 15 ornithologists {including JTRS). Following the IOC meeting, TPI and JTRS analysed the responses to the earlier paper, and made modified proposals, taking into consideration not only the comments received from BOU members and British Birds readers, but also the implications of the names adopted by Sibley & Monroe (1990). These re­ vised proposals were discussed by the BOU Records Committee and, with a few exceptions, were presented to the BOU Council in late 1991. The Council agreed that these names should go forward as the BOU's recommen­ dations to the IOC Working Group, accepting that further discussion would inevitably lead to some of the proposed names being changed. In the instances where opinions on names remain divided, both options are listed here. Thus, whereas the earlier BOURC paper {Brit. Birds 81: .'355-377; Ibis 130: Supplement) explained reasons for suggesting changes from current British practice {The 'British Birds' List of Birds of the Western Pakarctic, 1984, and the BOU's 'The Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland, 1971 with modifications as noted in BOURC reports), this present paper aims to give publicity to the relevant names in Sibley & Monroe (1990), of which the BOU has accepted 88.0% and British Birds has accepted 87.2%. and to explain the reasons for suggesting that 117 of the Sibley & Monroe names (less than 14%) might be bettered. The resulting list of proposed names is, dius, a combination of proposals re­ sulting from work by the BOURC, by Sibley & Monroe (1990) and their 15 international contacts, by the even-wider international forum resulting from the BOURC's earlier correspondence request, and by British Birds. Anyone viewing these proposed names should be aware of the significant moves towards resolving differences between American and British names which have already been made by Sibley & Monroe (1990) and, earlier, by the American Ornithologists' Union {Check-list of North American Birds, 6th edn, 1983). Some problem areas remain (e.g. loons versus divers, jaegers versus skuas), and these will have to be resolved within the next few years. The list presented here contains 200 changes from current British practice which have been agreed by both the BOU and British Birds. On the outstanding differ- ences- -26 names over which the BOU and British Birds differ- we now seek to determine readers' opinions by means of a postal vote spage vii). On the re­ maining discrepancies between the list published here and the Sibley & Mon­ roe names, we hope that readers with constructive comments will send them, as requested {Brit. Birds 85: 47), to Burt L. Monroe Jr. The opportunity has been taken here to update the West Pakarctic list maintained by British Birds, with additions and corrections up to 31st August 1991. The sequence and scientific nomenclature continue to follow the long- established and familiar order (K. H. Voous, 1977, list of Recent Hohrctk Bird Species), apart from the following changes adopted by the BOURC: Ptiffimts velkouan is separated from P. puffinus, Moms bassanus replaces Sula bassana, Pluvialis fuha is separated from P. deminwa, and Anthus petrosus and A. rubescens are separated from A. spinoletia; and the splitting of one non-British species: Aquila nipalensis is separated from A. rapax. In order to determine the impact ofthe human food supply on the Alpine Chough, foraging flock size and distribution were studied in a tourist region in the Northern French Alps between 1988 and 1992. Alpine Chough attendance at tourist sites was closely related to human activities. Activity rhytbrn was influenced by human presence on picnic area in summer. Relations to human activities held at a seasonal scale (such as opening of a ski station) but not at a daily time scale (such as weekend). With an itinerary set in one of South Africa’s premier birding provinces, the Limpopo Province, we were getting ready for a birding extravaganza. The forests of Magoebaskloof would be our first stop, spending a day and a half in the area and targeting forest special after forest special as well as tricky range-restricted species such as Short-clawed Lark and Gurney’s Sugarbird. Afterwards we would descend the eastern escarpment and head into Kruger National Park, where we would make our way to the northern sections. These included Punda Maria, Pafuri, and the Makuleke Concession – a mouthwatering birding itinerary that was sure to deliver. HENEBERG A b s t r a c t : Variability of the nest construction in swallows (Hirundinidae) is more diverse than in other families of oscine birds. I compared the nest-building behaviour with pooled data of clutch size and overall hatching success for 20 species of swallows. The clutch size was significantly higher in temperate cavity-adopting swallow species than in species using other nesting modes including species breeding in evolutionarily advanced mud nests (P<0.05) except of the burrow-excavating Bank Swallow. Decrease of the clutch size during the evolution of nest construction is not compensated by the increase of the overall hatching success. K e y w o r d s : Hirundinidae, nest construction, clutch size, evolution Birds use distinct methods to avoid nest-predation: active nest defence, nest camouflage and concealment or sheltered nesting. While large and powerful species prefer active nest-defence, swallows and martins usually prefer construction of sheltered nests (LLOYD 2004). The nests of swallows vary from natural cavities in trees and rocks, to self-exca- vated burrows to mud retorts and cups attached to vertical faces. Much attention has been devoted to the importance of controlling for phylogeny in com- parative tests (HARVEY & PAGEL 1991), including molecular phylogenetic studies of swallows (WINKLER & SHELDON 1993). Interactions between the nest-construction va- riability and the clutch size, however, had been ignored.

Our flight in from the UK was delayed so no time for any real birding on this first day of our “Chilled Birding Tour”. Our local guide Tijan and our ground crew met us at the airport. We piled into Tijan’s well used minibus as Little Swifts and Yellow-billed Kites flew above us. A short drive took us to our lovely small boutique hotel complete with pool and lovely private gardens, we were going to enjoy staying here. Having settled in we all met up for a pre-dinner drink in the warmth of an African evening. The food was delicious, and we chatted excitedly about the birds that lay ahead on this nine- day trip to The Gambia, the first time in West Africa for all our guests. At first light we were exploring the gardens of the hotel and enjoying the warmth after leaving the chilly UK behind. Both Red-eyed and Laughing Doves were easy to see and a flash of colour announced the arrival of our first Beautiful Sunbird, this tiny gem certainly lived up to its name! A bird flew in landing in a fig tree and again our jaws dropped, a Yellow-crowned Gonolek what a beauty! Shocking red below, black above with a daffodil yellow crown, we were loving Gambian birds already.

First, comes a general introduction to Ethiopia. The text of this section is largely drawn from the recently published Birding Ethiopia, authored by Keith Barnes, Christian, Boix and I. Next comes a day-by-day itinerary. Finally, there is an annotated bird list and a mammal list. ETHIOPIA INTRODUCTION Many people imagine Ethiopia as a flat, famine- ridden desert, but this is far from the case. Ethiopia is remarkably diverse, and unexpectedly lush. This is the ʻroof of Africaʼ, holding the continentʼs largest and most contiguous mountain ranges, and some of its tallest peaks. Cleaving the mountains is the Great Rift Valley, which is dotted with beautiful lakes. Towards the borders of the country lie stretches of dry scrub that are more like the desert most people imagine. But even in this arid savanna, diversity is high, and the desert explodes into verdure during the rainy season. The diversity of Ethiopiaʼs landscapes supports a parallel diversity of birds and other wildlife, and although birds are the focus of our tour, there is much more to the country. Ethiopia is the only country in Africa that was never systematically colonized, and Rueppell’s Robin-Chat, a bird of the Ethiopian mountains.
