But on the inside, we’re a lot more than that. We’re a group of people who believe passionately in the potential of every New Zealander to enjoy a wholicious life. The potential to be healthy, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. The potential to be happy. The potential to live life with a purpose. And we believe good nutrition is integral to this journey. Because what you feed your body and your mind changes the way you feel. In 1901 Sanitarium started making healthy, nutritious foods. And long before it became trendy, we were advocating for the benefits of wholesome plant-based foods. We did this to give New Zealanders healthier choices and we’ve been doing it ever since. Today, we’re the largest health food company that’s still 100% New Zealand owned – and proud of it! Good food should also be good for the environment. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to source local ingredients and make products locally to reduce our impact on the planet. We’re also mindful when making decisions around technology, energy sources and methods of operation, to ensure that the choices we make are sustainable. Caring for the community is a core value of Sanitarium and our 280 employees. Whether it’s the world’s largest kids triathlon series, the KickStart Breakfast Club, our free nutritional advice service or our annual international community project, we’re here because we want to make a difference. Wholicious - it’s what we do, it’s who we are. Because, after all, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. 3 OUR PARTNERSHIP LOVE IT or HATE IT Since 1908, the Sanitarium Health Food Company has owned the sole rights for the distribution of Marmite in Australia and New Zealand. In 1902 the Marmite Food Company was founded in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, where the raw material was readily available from the town’s brewers. The original recipe contained salt, spices and celery. Later folic acid, vitamin B12, thiamin and riboflavin - vitamins which occur naturally in some foods - were added in high concentrations. In 1908, the Sanitarium Health Food Company purchased the sole rights to distribute Marmite in Australasia and the Pacific, while Unilever still holds the distribution rights for Britain. Over the years, the Sanitarium Health Food Company has opted to alter the product to make it sweeter by adding sugar and caramel, whilst Unilever has kept the original product intact. 5 ATTENDANCE Twistleton Reece, President, Sanitarium Health Food Company Reece will provide a brief background on the Sanitarium Health Food Company, discuss it’s partnership with Marmite and the introduction of Marmite to the Canadian market. Today, the main ingredients of Marmite are glutamic acid-rich yeast extract, with lesser quantities of sodium chloride, vegetable extract, niacin, thiamine, spice extracts, riboflavin, folic acid, celery extracts, sugar and caramel, although the precise composition is a trade secret. How is Marmite used? Marmite is traditionally eaten as a savoury spread on bread, toast, savoury biscuits or crackers, and other similar baked products. Owing to its concentrated taste, it is often spread thinly with butter or margarine. Marmite can also be made into a savoury hot drink by adding one teaspoon to a mug of hot water much like Oxo and Bovril. Marmite can be paired with cheese, such as in a cheese sandwich, and may also be spread on bread with potato chips added to make a “Marmite and Chippie” sandwich. In Singapore and Malaysia, Marmite is popularly added to plain rice congee to give it a strong, salty flavour. In Malaysia, Marmite has been used for cooking with chicken, prawns or crab. Marmite has also been used as an ingredient in cocktails, including the Marmite Cocktail and the Marmite Gold Rush. What came out first, Marmite or Vegemite? In 1919, following the disruption of British Marmite imports after World War I and prior to the introduction of Vegemite, Callister’s employer, the Australian company Fred Walker & Co., gave him the task of developing a spread from the used yeast being dumped by breweries. Did you know Marmite has nutritional value? By 1912, the discovery of vitamins was a boost for Marmite, as the spread is a rich source of the vitamin B complex; with the vitamin B1 deficiency beri-beri being common during World War I, the spread became more popular. British troops during World War I were issued Marmite as part of their rations. Additionally, in the 1930s, Marmite was used by the English scientist Lucy Wills to successfully treat a form of anaemia in mill workers in Bombay. She later identified folic acid as the active ingredient. Marmite was also used to treat malnutrition in Suriya-Mal workers during the 1934–5 malaria epidemic in Sri Lanka. 7 MEDIA RELEASE Sanitarium Health Food Company announces introduction of Marmite into the Canadian market TORONTO, Nov. 10, 2016/CNW/ - Media and public alike gathered today at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto for the Sanitarium Health Food Company’s launch of Marmite in Canada. Twistleton Reece, President of Sanitarium Health Food Company, and Emma Johnson, President and CEO of Marmite Food Extract Company were at the event to introduce Marmite to Canadians. Dr. Christina Jones, a G.P. at the Gates of Maple Family Practice, was also on hand to discuss the nutritional value of Marmite. Reece of Sanitarium Health Food Company introduced Marmite by explaining his long relationship with the product. “I grew up in Burton upon Trent, where the first Marmite factory was built,” he said. “The strong but wonderful smells coming from the Marmite factory began my love affair with the product. It’s delicious, savoury, sweet, and holds a superfood status owing to its high levels of folic acid, vitamin B12, thiamin and riboflavin,” Reece explained. He also elaborated on the company’s decision to focus on university and college students as their target market for 8 MEDIA RELEASE advertising campaigns. “For the first time in their lives, young adults find themselves cooking and looking after their own health and well-being without parental intervention,” he stated. “Students often begin to experience deficiencies in important vitamins and minerals, which the use of Marmite could combat.” These claims were further supported by Dr. Christina Jones who emphasized the need for a balanced diet and broke down the nutritional components of Marmite to illustrate its nutritional value. “Marmite can be a great source of nutrition for these young adults, especially since they tend to lead somewhat chaotic lives. It contains a lot of vitamin B and B12 and keeps you full for longer. Marmite is a convenient way for these students to eat healthy on the go and with minimal effort.” Along with samples, a small photo booth was set up with an iPad to capture taster’s first reactions to the product which were then shared on Marmite’s social media channels using the hashtags #mmmarmite and #marmiteformillennials. Starting today, Marmite can be purchased at groceries stores across Canada for CAD $8.00 a jar. ### About Sanitarium Health Food Company Sanitarium Health Food Company believes passionately in the potential of every person to enjoy a wholicious life.
