The original character assessment reports, part of a series of 30, mostly for a local authority area, included a “Background Chapter” on the formation of the landscape. These documents have been revised because feedback said they are useful, despite the fact that other sources of information are now readily available on the internet, unlike in the 1990’s when the first versions were produced. The content of the chapters varied considerably between the reports, and it has been restructured into a more standard format: Introduction, Physical Influences and Human Influences for all areas; and Cultural Influences sections for the majority. Some content variation still remains as the documents have been revised rather than rewritten, The information has been updated with input from the relevant Local Authorities. The historic and cultural aspects have been reviewed and updated by Historic Environment Scotland. Gaps in information have been filled where possible.

    ELEANOR BELL Experimenting with the Verbivocovisual: Edwin Morgan's Early Concrete Poetry In The Order of Things: An Anthology of Scottish Sound, Pattern and Goncrete Poems, Ken Cockburn and Alec Finlay suggest that with the advent of con- crete poetry, 'Scotland connected to an international avant-garde movement in a manner barely conceivable today'. The 'classic phase' of concrete poetry in Scotiand, they note, begins around 1962, and, referencing Stephen Scobie, they point out that it should probably be regarded as an experiment in late modernism in its concerns with 'self-refiexiveness, juxtaposition and simultanism'.^ Some of the chief concerns of concrete poetry were therefore to expand upon the conceptual possibilities of poetry itself, instüling it with a new energy which could then radiate off the page, or the alternative medium on which it was presented. Both Edwin Morgan and Ian Hamilton Finlay were instantly drawn to these contrasts between the word, its verbal utterance and its overaU visual impact (or, as termed in Joyce's Finnegans Wake, its 'verbivocovisual presentements', which the Brazüian Noigandres later picked up on). Although going on to become the form's main pro- ponents within Scotiand, Morgan and Finlay recognised from early on that its Scottish reception most likely be frosty (with Hugh MacDiarmid famously asserting that 'these spatial arrangements of isolated letters and geo- metricaüy placed phrases, etc. have nothing whatever to do with poetry — any more than mud pies can be caüed architecture').^ Both poets none- theless entered into correspondence with key pioneering practitioners across the globe, and were united in their defence of the potential and legitimacy of the form.

This driving tour of 35 miles round the north end of Loch Fyne provides interesting information about the heritage of the area and places to stop and explore. Allow a long full day if you want to see everything, or go back another day to visit some of the attractions on the route. Please be careful on single track roads to watch your speed and use the passing places to allow oncoming traffic to pass. Keep on the left! Auchindrain to Inveraray On leaving the museum at Auchindrain turn right onto the A83. The small town of Inveraray is only 5.5 miles away. Once you reach the town look out for signs for parking. There is plenty of pay and display parking within easy walking distance of the cafes, shops and Inveraray Jail. Parking for Inveraray Castle is in the castle grounds and is well signposted. Inveraray Town Inveraray, a formally-planned town, was established in its present location by the Duke of Argyll and was built between 1772 and 1800. The town was originally half a mile away close to Inveraray Castle, but was moved when the Castle was rebuilt. It is the traditional county town of Argyll. It is well known as the gateway to the Highlands and Islands and from here many places around Argyll can be reached for exploring. There is a wide variety of shops, walks and places to eat in Inveraray, with plenty of parking and superb views of the area.

    The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art NORFOLK, YORKSHIRE & SCOTLAND: COUNTRY HOUSES OF SIR EDWIN LUTYENS & SIR ROBERT LORIMER May 17 – 25, 2012 Arranged by Classical Excursions Architectural historian and Lutyens tour leader extraordinaire Paul Waite opens the article he wrote for the Institute’s Fall 2011 issue of The Forum with this comment, “The theme of our tour for the ICAA [May 19 – 26, 2011] was diversity, suitability, dexterous skill, and craftsmanship. Of course we were looking at the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens….” Paul, who is a trustee of The Lutyens Trust, will expand upon this theme by taking us this time to such North England counties as Norfolk and Yorkshire and to Scotland. He has arranged for us to see another glorious array of private country houses by Lutyens, but also to introduce us to the architectural treasures of Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, who is known as “the Lutyens of Scotland”. Lutyens (1869 – 1944) is considered one of England’s greatest and most prolific architects with more than 600 commissions in Great Britain, Europe, South Africa, India and the United States. Beginning at the age of nineteen with little formal education or architectural training, his career lasted more than half a century, from the time of Queen Victoria to World War II. Michael Barker states in his booklet Sir Edwin Lutyens, “His work, while romantic in inspiration, became classical in discipline, yet complex and often abstract in design, and was always executed with excellent craftsmanship, using fine materials.” Lutyens is an icon with American architects and designers, especially as the architect of fabulous country houses, for their originality and durability of style.

To continue consideration of this Application to allow a period of public consultation to be undertaken in respect of the new Masterplan submitted by the Applicant; 2. To note that local consultation had already been ongoing since submission of the Masterplan on 27 October 2011; 3. That consultation on the Masterplan be advertised in the local press from 1 December 2011 advising that representations on this should be submitted to the Head of Planning and Regulatory Services prior to the 20 December 2011; and 4. That this application and any further representations received will be considered by the Committee on 21 December 2011.
