APRIL 2016 The Town Crier - Page 7 Snippets from Berry Preschool - What a month! Huge thanks to the Berry Branch of the NSW Fire Brigade for their fun and educational visits. The children learnt some important messages about fi re safety and what to do in the event of a fi re, including the drill “Get down low and go go go”. The Friday children were thrilled to sit in the fi re-engine cab and to use the big hoses to put out a pretend fi re on the preschool roof. We have been excited to start our ‘World Around Us’ program with Tristan from the Shoalhaven Zoo this month. This hands-on program saw the children patting quails, Frederick the green-tree frog, Squeeze the python, Miss May the wombat and Charlie the saltwater crocodile. We learnt lots of fascinating facts about them and can’t wait for the next visit when we will learn all about bugs. In art classes the children have explored different techniques for printing, using a pasta maker as a printing press and a gel base to create prints from natural objects such as leaves and branches. We have also made charcoal drawings to depict our favourite story Harry the Dirty Dog, created Matisse-style patterns in a collage, and in our l atest project we are inspired by the works of the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. The children have been busy helping plant new herbs and vegies in our revamped garden, including basil, yellow beans, rainbow chard, lettuces, strawberries and tomatoes. They are enthusiastic about looking after and watering these plants, so we hope to produce some good crops and to use them for cooking experiences to see what we can create. The Wednesday group have started Zumba and are expending plenty of energy, while Yoga for the Thursday group is a lovely contrast. Both have many benefi ts for the children’s physical wellbeing. Finally, we have a new outdoor mud kitchen, which the children absolutely love. In time we hope to expand on it if we can get some clever handy men or women to help. Til next time!

We are already a quarter of the way through the year and things are really hotting up for BRC. I’m not just talking about the late summer heat wave either. The weather has really been very changeable this summer and several events have had to be cancelled due to rain. The much anticipated Working Equitation clinic was one casualty but will now be held in September. In the meantime fourteen riders met at the grounds for an unoffi cial Working Equitation training afternoon on the 8th of March. This evening was a great success despite the late afternoon humidity. Welcome to the new riders on the day. So far this year we have managed to hold Show Jumping, Eventing and Dressage clinics and training days. We have also held our fi rst dressage and show jumping competitions with a very big turnout of happy competitors. The temporary leased grounds at Schofi elds Lane are useable and we are continuing to address issues with the surface and the facilities. Take one grassy paddock, a shipping container, one portaloo and a caravan and the BRC gypsies have a place to call home. It has taken a great deal of hard work and negotiation to make it possible for us to operate as a club until the permanent facilities at Scholfi elds lane are constructed. I guess when progress occurs you can let it overwhelm you or you can turn it into an opportunity. I hope everyone will be behind the concept of a new Equestrian Centre for all riders in the Shoalhaven region. GG days are also once again being held for those adults who have a horse, some spare time and the inclination to share a post ride chat over coffee (and possibly cake). GG’s is currently held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30 to 12pm. It is requested that you notify club secretary Judy Sweeney of your intention to join in as at least two people must be in attendance for safety reasons. The calendar is fi lling rapidly so anyone interested in attending an event with Berry Riding Club is encouraged to keep an eye on our Facebook page and our website www.berryridingclub.com. au. March has been a month to stop and smell the roses. Enjoyable in our own gardens where they have been fl aunting their fi nal autumn fl ush, roses are even more spectacular in massed displays. Two club outings this month have allowed members to drink in their fi ll of scent and colour - the fi rst to the Goulburn Rose Show (see picture), and the second to the enclosed rose garden in the Wollongong Botanic Gardens. At our March meeting we were privileged to be able to purchase a special rose, “Berry Delightful”. Bred in England and grown at the well-known rose nursery in Fitzroy Falls, “Berry Delightful” was only offi cially released the following day at the 2016 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Berry gardeners may like to purchase this shrub rose for the name alone, but the ruby colouring at the centre of ruffl ed pink petals should tempt all rose lovers. APRIL 2016 The Town Crier - Page 25 High demand, low supply!

The market in the Berry area is extremely strong, with price records being broken. The high demand and low housing supply is driving up the prices of both lifestyle properties and houses in town.

Elders Berry have written the record books, with their professional approach and astute advice to vendors. If you are thinking about selling your home, give Tim and Nicholas a call to see how to capitalise on the current exciting market dynamics.

Children love the “hands on” room, where they can tackle such outmoded technologies as typewriters and an old telephone exchange console. The Berry Museum is not just a building with a collection of “old stuff”, but a busy and useful part of Berry’s life. “Working The architecture of the building is unusual, being one of only a handful of buildings in this style (and only one other survives, in Melbourne). The architect, William Wardell, had a distinguished career. He designed many churches, for Berry” including St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney. As well as a great collection of interesting items, donated by local people and telling the story of Berry’s early days of timber getting and dairying, the Museum houses a volunteer service for tracing family history, and a photographic collection. Group visits can be arranged, where a guided tour is given. Older people invariably fi nd items from their own past which bring back memories—usually of hard work. Can I help you?
