The “Go Out & About Club” offers outings for older people who have mobility problems, people with disabilities (physical and/or sensory) and people who are isolated within the community who are unable to use public transport or do not have any independent means of travel. Membership of this Club is free. How to book a trip 1. Join the Go Out & About Club - Just telephone or email one of our Co-ordinators to check eligibility and request a membership form. Membership forms are also available to download from our website www.gonorthdevon.co.uk 2. Call us 9.30am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday to book your trip. Or email [email protected] Seats are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. 3. Be ready to go. The Co-ordinator will give you the approximate pick-up time from your home before you travel. Please be ready for the volunteer driver to collect you and if you need to cancel, please ensure the office is notified as soon as possible. 4. Tell us what you need. If you are a wheelchair user (either transferable or non-transferable), have a walker or frame, please let us know when booking your trip. (Clients who remain in their wheelchairs for journeys will need to have them approved and tagged by Devon County Council to be safely secured on a minibus). Tell us if you would like to bring a companion, or if you would like us to request a volunteer escort to assist you (subject to availability). If a volunteer escort is provided by GND to support you, then you will need to pay for the volunteer’s seat on the minibus. 5. Payments. All trips/outings must be pre-paid and are non-refundable and are non-transferable. (Cheques made payable to Go North Devon Ltd). If payment for the trip has not been received within 10 days of booking, your seat on the trip will be cancelled. Rules of the Go Out & About Club 1. Go North Devon Ltd will administer the Go Out & About Club. 2. All passengers of the Go Out & About Club must complete and return a membership form. 3. Go North Devon Ltd will carry out fundraising activities from time to time to supplement the running costs of the Go Out & About Club. 4. All funds relating to Go Out & About Club will be held in Go North Devon’s accounts under “Go Out & About”. 5. All members of the Go Out & About Club will be kept informed of forthcoming trips. 6. Go Out & About Club will publish the cost of individual outings in advance. 7. Journeys will only operate if a minimum of 10 passengers have booked.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 40 years of Community Information in South Molton It was back in February 1979 that local people agreed that South Molton should be the focus for a national project researching the information needs of rural areas and how to meet them. The “Community Information Project” was run by the British Library, Devon County Council, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and the Community Council of Devon with David Venner as Project Officer. The Community Information Centre opened at 1, East Street in 1980 providing local access to advice and information services previously only available at a distance, as well as bringing existing local services together into a one stop shop. The network of Village Representatives was set up, nominated by Parish Councils, Women's Institutes and Churches, and this Newsletter was start- ed with their help to provide an exchange of information in the 24 parishes in and around South Molton. Several of the initial organisations and this Newsletter moved over to 125, East Street at the Amory Centre in 2008 under the aegis of South Molton Town Council and North Devon District Council - and community infor- mation is still going strong! A wide variety of organisations have come and gone over the years and “Pirate Project”, again based in South Molton, introduced information technology, extending and improving access to advice and infor- mation enormously. Local information became available both on line and in hard copy as a series of Who’s Whos for every Parish and for interest groups such as the elderly, young people and disabled. Local Information is now available to all on the internet - and so is the Community News - with hard copy still circulated throughout the area by the volunteer Village Representatives network.

    Connecting Devon and Somerset DC14-075 February 25, 2014 For immediate release CONNECTING DEVON AND SOMERSET ANNOUNCES SUPERFAST BROADBAND FOR 25 COMMUNITIES Following last month’s announcement on exchange areas, CDS confirms the communities to benefit from high-speed fibre broadband Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) today confirmed the next 25 communities to benefit from the £94 million programme to bring superfast broadband to rural areas. Last month, the programme announced that it would make high-speed fibre broadband available to 70,000 homes and businesses by the end of July and revealed the names of the latest exchange areas to be included in the CDS roll-out plans. Now it has been able to go one step further and pinpoint the actual communities within those exchange areas, which will benefit. In Devon, they include Ashford, Landkey, Heanton Punchardon, Braunton, Morthoe, Swimbridge, Burlescombe, Feniton, Ottery St Mary, Dunkeswell, Membury, Honiton, Newton Abbot, Ashburton, Ilsington, Kingskerswell, Bovey Tracey and Belstone. In Somerset, the programme will roll-out to Horton, Barrington, Ilminster, Broadway, Dowlish Wake , Kingstone, and Wellington*. Today’s announcement comes as a result of the detailed survey work that is critical in determining how the roll-out plan takes shape through the life of the programme. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.
