The Property Kerscott House is a substantial, detached, period farmhouse, Grade II* Listed of Architectural and Historical importance. Believed to date back to the early 16th Century, the property was owned initially by the Bedford Estate then remained in the same family ownership for some 250 years. This would go a long way to explaining how so many of the character features have been beautifully retained. Kerscott House offers six bedrooms and three spacious reception rooms, and boasts a separate annexe. Furthermore, accessed via a separate drive, there are two well-presented barn conversions, which are currently used for holiday letting. Each benefits from characterful two bedroom accommodation, with vaulted ceilings. Attached to the holiday cottages is a further barn, which is currently used as a games room which presently houses a table tennis table and a dart board. The quality accommodation in the farmhouse is well proportioned and versatile. There is a traditional farmhouse style Kitchen / Breakfast Room which is family orientated and has a range of hand built oak units with granite work surfaces and an Aga. Within the kitchen / breakfast room there is also the remains of an old exterior window. The Sitting Room has an inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove, bread oven, oak flooring and a beamed ceiling. The Drawing Room has the ornate plaster moulded ceiling and access to the Oak framed Conservatory that overlooks the gardens. At the rear of the farmhouse is the Dining Room that has a stone floor. To the front of the farmhouse is a barn, which offers further potential for a variety of uses, and is currently used for storage. There is also an Atcost barn and a double garage, with attached workshop. On the whole, the property stands well within its grounds, which are approaching 14 acres, and enjoys complete seclusion and privacy. Properties of this quality and calibre rarely become available to the open market, and an early viewing is strongly recommended. The gardens have been arranged to blend into the surrounding landscape, exemplified by the ‘borrowed view’ of a scenic hill though a circular frame set in a boundary hedge. This view has featured as a cover on the RHS ‘The Garden’ magazine and other publications. The collection of unusual trees and shrubs is complemented by largely native planting in the various garden areas, providing interest and enjoyment all year round. In total, there is approximately 14 acres at Kerscott House, 2.8 acres of which comprises a paddock at the north of the property. To the western boundary there are landscaped woodlands, with a water meadow and spring fed ponds. The remainder of the gardens and grounds have been designed to create idyllic vistas across the grounds and to encourage wildlife. Surrounding the property are more formal gardens, which enjoy seclusion and complete privacy, as well as being the perfect place for alfresco dining. There is an orchard with a superb range of apple trees, pear trees, plum and greengage, mazzards, a medlar and a mulberry tree. There are also a range of soft fruits including loganberries, blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 40 years of Community Information in South Molton It was back in February 1979 that local people agreed that South Molton should be the focus for a national project researching the information needs of rural areas and how to meet them. The “Community Information Project” was run by the British Library, Devon County Council, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and the Community Council of Devon with David Venner as Project Officer. The Community Information Centre opened at 1, East Street in 1980 providing local access to advice and information services previously only available at a distance, as well as bringing existing local services together into a one stop shop. The network of Village Representatives was set up, nominated by Parish Councils, Women's Institutes and Churches, and this Newsletter was start- ed with their help to provide an exchange of information in the 24 parishes in and around South Molton. Several of the initial organisations and this Newsletter moved over to 125, East Street at the Amory Centre in 2008 under the aegis of South Molton Town Council and North Devon District Council - and community infor- mation is still going strong! A wide variety of organisations have come and gone over the years and “Pirate Project”, again based in South Molton, introduced information technology, extending and improving access to advice and infor- mation enormously. Local information became available both on line and in hard copy as a series of Who’s Whos for every Parish and for interest groups such as the elderly, young people and disabled. Local Information is now available to all on the internet - and so is the Community News - with hard copy still circulated throughout the area by the volunteer Village Representatives network.

Connecting Devon and Somerset DC14-075 February 25, 2014 For immediate release CONNECTING DEVON AND SOMERSET ANNOUNCES SUPERFAST BROADBAND FOR 25 COMMUNITIES Following last month’s announcement on exchange areas, CDS confirms the communities to benefit from high-speed fibre broadband Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) today confirmed the next 25 communities to benefit from the £94 million programme to bring superfast broadband to rural areas. Last month, the programme announced that it would make high-speed fibre broadband available to 70,000 homes and businesses by the end of July and revealed the names of the latest exchange areas to be included in the CDS roll-out plans. Now it has been able to go one step further and pinpoint the actual communities within those exchange areas, which will benefit. In Devon, they include Ashford, Landkey, Heanton Punchardon, Braunton, Morthoe, Swimbridge, Burlescombe, Feniton, Ottery St Mary, Dunkeswell, Membury, Honiton, Newton Abbot, Ashburton, Ilsington, Kingskerswell, Bovey Tracey and Belstone. In Somerset, the programme will roll-out to Horton, Barrington, Ilminster, Broadway, Dowlish Wake , Kingstone, and Wellington*. Today’s announcement comes as a result of the detailed survey work that is critical in determining how the roll-out plan takes shape through the life of the programme. The new locations follow 19 exchange areas** where the partnership has already made fibre available and a further seven areas*** which are due to ‘go live’ by the end of March – see Notes to EDitors For Further Details oF these locations. The programme has updated the interactive map on the CDS website, www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk, to reflect this latest announcement.
