We may be At Dalston, Cumdivock, Raughton Head and Wreay we will hold solemn acts of on the road, on the pavement, walking through grass or wading through the mud, but what remembrance on Remembrance Sunday at 11.00 am. We do this because it is important is really below us? Well if we were to go a little deeper we would find a very different not to forget. We are at a turning point in the memory of our nation: The 1st World War world, that of minerals and it was our speaker Ian Tyler who opened up this world of ended 101 years ago and the last of our veterans have died. The 2nd World War ended 74 minerals and mining. Ian was the owner of the Cumbria Mining Museum where he had years ago. The Korean, Falklands, Gulf, Afghanistan Wars and other conflicts have given spent many years building up his collection. He has written many books on the subject of us more sacrifices to commemorate and remember but we are at a point where we have mining and minerals and has won the Cumbria Book of the Year three times. His expertise fewer folk with living memories of the World Wars and this means that we have to choose on the subject has led him to appear on television. As a mine historian his knowledge is not to forget. extensive. Cumbria with particular reference to Caldbeck has been important for lead, copper and iron ore since the time of Queen Elizabeth I and was known as one of the best mining areas known at that time. There was copper in the Caldbeck hills plus lead and silver which was claimed by the Queen. Lead was used for bullets and cannon balls. The list of minerals was exhaustive. In the 16th Century the Germans after walking 1000 miles to get here established a successful mining industry around Keswick. Like all industries mining has faced success and decline. Ian brought many samples of different minerals for us to see and feel and showed slides which helped us to understand the intricacies of removing these minerals from the earth beneath us. Although many of Ian’s books were about minerals and mining he has written on other subjects, in particular the RAF in Cumbria. Ian gave a very interesting and informative talk and I think we were all rather surprised to the extent and history of mining in our area. Very interesting and with Ian’s interjections of humour, a very enjoyable talk. A Vote of Thanks was given by Felicity Coulthard. Due to the subject matter we opened our meeting up and were pleased to see a few men joining us for the evening. Everyone enjoyed their refreshments and it was a good opportunity to look at Ian’s books that he had brought along. On the first Remembrance Sunday people gathered to think primarily of their sons, their brothers, their friends and fathers, now when we gather many of us are thinking of Following this we settled down to complete the business of the evening. Grandparents and Great Grandparents, so why is it important that we should not forget? Ian had judged our competition which was ‘A Stone’. If you wish to commemorate the sacrifice of the fallen this year then I encourage you to engage with your society, with your community to create and sustain peace. As Edmund Burke was once thought to have said "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Each of us have this choice; to wait and watch or to get involved before things go too far. Let us not forget their sacrifices and let us remember our role in our future. • 15 Year Strategy of the 3Rd Local Transport Plan, Moving Cumbria Forward
Cumbria County Council Moving Cumbria Forward Cumbria Transport Plan Strategy 2011-2026 Serving the people of Cumbria cumbria.gov.uk Cumbria County Council Contents 1. Welcome and Summary 4 2. Delivering Our Vision 6 3. About Cumbria 8 4. What Is Needed 12 5. The Bigger Picture 22 6. What We Want 24 7. Making It Happen 34 8. Are We Doing It Right 40 9. Jargon Busting 42 Cumbria Transport Plan 2011-2026 Foreword I am delighted to introduce to you the new Local Transport Plan for Cumbria. The Plan which is intended to be concise and easily understandable is contained within three documents • the 15 year Strategy, Moving Cumbria Forward; • the 3 year Implementation Plan; • the Cumbria County Council transport policies.. Transport plays an important role in our every day life whether it is driving, cycling or walking on Cumbria’s highway network or using the County’s bus and rail services. I want Cumbria to have a high quality resilient highway network and transport system that everyone can access. One which supports the development of a sustainable and prosperous low carbon economy and ensures Cumbria’s outstanding environment can be enjoyed. However, to achieve this we face significant challenges over the next 15 years, in particular how we can best meet the needs of Cumbria against a backdrop of reduced levels of funding for transport . The Transport Strategy, Moving Cumbria Forward developed in partnership with our local communities , businesses and other stakeholders sets out the agreed approach to addressing the challenges facing us. Supporting the priorities of the Cumbria Community Strategy and the Council Plan of Cumbria County Council, it emphasises the need to deliver value for money schemes.
