2 Message Do you pray? According to a recent survey published by the Christian charity Tearfund, 27% of Christians say that they have never prayed! I find that astonishing, given the teaching that Jesus himself gives us about prayer. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus says 3 times “when you pray…” rather than “if you pray…” giving the impression that he expected that those he was talking to would, did and had already prayed – that it was part of their walk with God. In fact, no-where in the Bible is prayer seen as an optional extra! It is seen as a vital part of our Christian life.

Of the 1065 respondents who identified themselves as Christian, 73% said that they had prayed in the past, but the frequency of prayer varied from several times a day (7%) to hardly ever (10%) or only in times of crisis (13%). Surprisingly, 1 in 5 of the 869 non- religious people surveyed said that they had prayed in the past. Of these, 55% said that they had prayed in times of crisis or tragedy, and 32% had prayed ‘on the off-chance that an element of their life or circumstances might change’, and almost 25% said that they had prayed as a ‘last resort’ or to feel comforted or less lonely.

So, why is prayer so important? When we become a Christian, we are not entering a state of being so much as entering into a relationship – a relationship with God himself! Life involves us in many different relationships, and each of those relationships involves communication of one sort or another. We relate with family and friends mostly by using the spoken word – by talking to and with each other. But we also use looks, touch and body language to communicate. When we fail to communicate, our relationships break down.

E-mails, letters and other ‘social media’ are also means of communication, though less satisfactory as they can easily be misunderstood without the nuances of facial and verbal expression, which give added meaning to the words.

Prayer is simply the form of communication that we have between ourselves and God. It can be formal, as in church services, but the best and most common prayer is an informal conversation with God – much as we would have with close family and friends. Without prayer, our relationship with God cannot develop and can easily break down. That is why prayer is so important. And, as with conversations between humans, this involves listening as much as speaking! Not easy to do at first, but the more we practice the better we become at it.

If you are among those 27% who have never prayed, prayer may seem daunting, but it helps to remember that our conversations don’t have to be 3 hours long! Some of them last less than a minute! Conversations with God in prayer can also vary in length considerably, and we should be able to talk about absolutely anything to him. What is important to God is not the length of our prayers nor necessarily the subject, but the fact that we actually talk with him!

7 Stockdalewath Free Church

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year;

“Give me a light that I might tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied;

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

We are currently reading the gospel of Luke and, after some teaching on the weekly passage, we share our thoughts and always appreciate how much we can learn from the diverse understanding we each bring. The Feeding of 5,000, in Salt Dough An ambitious Community Art Project creating the Bible story ‘The Feeding of 5,000 people’ in Salt Dough. Would anyone like to make some salt dough people, it’s easy? Just take 2 cups plain flour and 1 cup salt and mix with enough water to make a dough. Kneed it a little and then have fun making little people – just like a snowman but in miniature. (Dab the joins with water). This will make about 12-15 people, just right for 1 tray. Bake at 100 c for 2 hours and then store in a warm dry place. Do it with your neighbours, children or have a dough party! Local schools, groups and clubs are also invited to be involved. We aim to have 5000+ models that will be collected together and displayed locally. This is part of a county wide mission initiative ‘Moving Mountians’ being held in March. Our Mission community area stretches from Caldbeck to Dalston to Bowness on Solway. Mary Pattinson - 01228 576027 Steve Carter – 01228 710215

The Average Maximum was about half a degree lower than the long term average, which, though not exceptional was significantly lower than 2016 (9.57º). Likewise the Average Minimum was significantly lower than 2016. It was a month of ups & downs in terms of temperature. It started cold, soon rising to above average, then fell away, eventually reaching the Minimum for the month (10.9º) on the 11th. It warmed up gradually towards Christmas, with a drop again towards New Year. The Rainfall figure, though below average, would have been much lower without the 37 mm that fell around Christmas Day. The rest of the month produced short burst of rain with drier interludes. There was a particularly windy period around the 7th. Otherwise there were a number of virtually calm days particularly around the middle of the month. As might be expected the frosty days gave us large amounts of sunshine. However, overall the sunless days brought the figure down to roughly a third of the maximum possible (about 70 hours). Statistics RAINFALL Total : 92.27 mm Average: 107.09 mm Wettest Day: 25th (22.00 mm) Days with zero rain: 7 TEMPERATURE Maximum: 13.7º (6th) Average Maximum for 2017: 6.67º Average Maximum since 1989: 7.16º Days above Average Maximum: 15 Minimum: -10.9º (11th) Average Minimum for 2017: -0.45º Average Minimum since 1989: 0.15º Days below Average Minimum: 20 Days with Frost: 18 Days below -5º: 4 NOTE During the course of my recording during the past year it has become clear that the Minimum thermometer which I have been using is reading lower than the actual temperature. I will be determining what the variation is – which is several points of a degree and will adjust readings for the future and also for an as yet unknown past period. I will put together a review of 2017 for the next report. Ewan Preston – 016974 76388

Bell Bridge Bell Bridge was officially opened on the 19th December 2017, to replace the 245-year-old structure destroyed by Storm Desmond, restoring the link between two rural communities. The £1.1m structure has been designed to withstand future floods and incorporates stone from the old bridge. There is a video of the Official Opening on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_lzeFdequ4 Tony Furniss – 016974 76535 12 Raughton Head C of E Primary School Only 3 weeks into term and we seem to have achieved so much already. It has been lovely to take over as headteacher and meet so many supportive families. Village schools are an essential part of rural life and I look forward to working with the local community to develop and strengthen our links. We took part in a lovely Christingle service at All Saints' Church and the children were keen to have a go at sharing prayers with the congregation. The school has had a little move around and we now have a separate secretary's office, located at the front of the school. This allows us to keep our children safe by securing the gates into the rear playground. Please bear with us if you ring the front door bell...it's a long way through the building! This term we have been fortunate enough to enhance our PE curriculum with sports coaches from, 'Action Ants' with activities ranging from, dance to archery to fencing, to name just a few. Our after school club provision has also seen a makeover with a theme for each afternoon, the drama club on Tuesday has been a real hit and I look forward to any future performances. Our lunches remain popular and we are looking forward to our community lunches on Thursday 1st February and Wednesday 14th March. Should you wish to join us please book via Mrs Bell in the school office. For the younger members of our community we had our first, 'Messy Play' of the year. We are aiming to hold these each month and our next one will be on Tuesday, 27th February with a theme of 'New Life.' This session is open to all pre-school children and allows them the freedom to explore a variety of resources that we don't often dare at home (paint, playdough, sand, water). And please remember, we accept nursery children as soon as they are three years old. Please ring school should you wish to come for a visit. Alison Dickinson - 016974 76291
