Praise Roxane Gay for her big-hearted self-examining intelligence, for her inclusive and forgiving stance, for her courage and determination, for humanizing the theoretical and intellectualizing the mundane, for saying out loud the things we were thinking, for guiding us back to ourselves and returning to us what was ours all along. Roxane Gay is so great at weaving the intimate and personal with what is most bewildering and upsetting at this moment in culture. She is always looking, always thinking, always passionate, always careful, always right there. Gay's essays engage pop culture and her personal experiences, covering topics such as the Sweet Valley High series, Django Unchained , and Gay's own upbringing as a Haitian-American. Bad Feminist was one of two books published by Gay in , the other being her novel An Untamed State. The essays in Bad Feminist address a wide variety of topics, both cultural and personal. Bad Feminist was widely reviewed. Gay drew praise for her "wry and delightful voice. In print, on Twitter and in person, Gay has the voice of the friend you call first for advice, calm and sane as well as funny, someone who has seen a lot and takes no prisoners. The New York Times Book Review wrote that Gay relied too heavily on an "unreasonable strawman " to make her point, [1] and The Independent found that Gay's own contradictions within the book come off as "intellectually flimsy. One problem is the aforementioned recapitulation of tried and true analyses, opinions and memes, any or all of which might bear reprising if Gay brought to them a new and original take. The book was noted for its popularity in feminist circles, with the satirical site Reductress publishing a story about how a woman was a bad feminist because she hadn't yet read Bad Feminist. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay I was fine, as far as my safety went, but what lingered was the shame. I went against everything I had been taught by strong women and turned the tables to shame myself. I told myself that I invited their remarks. I was revealing and, so, those men just did what men do. When I was about 13, I stood in line with my mom and little brother at Disneyland on what was yet another very hot day. I knew we would be there all day, so I wore what was most comfortable: shorts and a tank top. Oh, the shame! How dare the world know that I had boobs? I barely even knew I had boobs at that point. They were nothing more than mosquito bites, but that was enough to cause a stir. I was taught that my boobs were not for what my biology textbooks had claimed but rather for the rest of the world to gawk at and sexualize. And when I allow the world to do that, no one is to blame but me. I felt belittled down to my breasts and shamed for something I could hardly control. I love my mother. She escaped an abusive relationship, raised my older brother as a single mother and started numerous businesses. My mom grew up in the Bible Belt, born and raised in Oklahoma. Her stretch of the Midwest is rancid with patriarchal normativity. Of course, nothing is wrong with the paths that many of those women followed, but far too many of them were never encouraged to reach beyond those roles. Complacency flows like water there, and patriarchal roles seem to only become more pervasive. Pan Lauren Oyler, Bookslut. The essays in Bad Feminist exhibit the kind of style that makes you wonder whether literature is dead and we have killed it. But I think we can demand something , and that is not what Roxane Gay has given us. Bad Feminist is about feminism, but, more broadly, it is about the emotional yearnings that motivate supposedly rational, wide-ranging proposed solutions to big problems … These sorts of scattershot concerns sometimes work better when Gay is running across the keyboard from high to low in discussing a single subject than when she is juxtaposing multiple works … But if I occasionally wish that Gay were a bit more formal in developing her arguments, her writing can also make a virtue of jarring compositions, of ideas that do not quite fit together. Good advice, Bad Feminist. But — new advice? Mixed Kirkus Reviews. Essayist, novelist and pop-culture guru Gay sounds off on the frustrating complexities of gender and race in pop culture and society as a whole … In this diverse collection of short essays, the author launches her critical salvos at seemingly countless waves of pop-cultural cannon fodder.
