Game Narrative Review ==================== Your name : Mostafa Haque Your school: Dakota State University Your email:[email protected] Month/Year you submitted this review: December 2013 ==================== Game Title: The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 Platform: PC, Playstation 2 Genre: Action Adventure Release Date: November 20th, 2001 Developer: Crystal Dynamics Publisher: Eidos Interactive Game Writer/Creative Director/Narrative Designer: Amy Henning, Paul Jenkins, Kurt Harland, Richard Lemarchand 1 Overview A broken, fantasy world, a twice-dead protagonist, and a cataclysm, fuelled by a time-travel induced paradox combine together to bring us Soul Reaver 2 – the third game in the widely acclaimed Legacy of Kain series. Bringing back the unique “shifting” based dual-world gameplay first introduced in its predecessor, Soul Reaver 2 continues the story of Raziel, a vampiric wraith whose quest for answers take him on a journey across time itself. Continuing the tradition set up by previous games in the series, Soul Reaver 2 utilizes masterfully written dialogue, delivered by voice acting legends like Michael Bell, Simon Templeman and the late Tony Jay, to deliver the bulk of its narrative. This focus on voice-acting, together with the game’s multi-layered theme of death, rebirth, fatalism, and free-will[1], made the game stand out amidst its contemporaries to such an extent that it is still hailed as an exemplary specimen of good narrative design in video games to this day. 2 Characters Raziel: The player character for the Soul Reaver branch of The Legacy of Kain series, Raziel is a vampiric, spectral entity whose history is as convulated and twisted as the spectral realm he now calls “home.” A former vampire hunting human priest, Raziel was raised into undeath by Kain, the enigmatic vampire- Guardian of Balance, to serve as his first lieutenant.

AMERGENT MUSIC: BEHAVIOR AND BECOMING IN TECHNOETIC & MEDIA ARTS by NORBERT F. HERBER A thesis submitted to the University of Plymouth in partial fulfilment for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Centre for Advanced Inquiry in Integrative Arts School of Art and Media Faculty of Arts In collaboration with Rutland Port Authorities December 2010 Abstract Norbert Herber Amergent Music: behavior and becoming in technoetic & media arts Technoetic and media arts are environments of mediated interaction and emergence, where meaning is negotiated by individuals through a personal examination and experience—or becoming—within the mediated space. !is thesis examines these environments from a musical perspective and consid- ers how sound functions as an analog to this becoming. Five distinct, original musical works explore the possibilities as to how the emergent dynamics of mediated, interactive exchange can be leveraged towards the construction of musical sound. In the context of this research, becoming can be understood relative to Henri Bergson’s descrip- tion of the appearance of reality—something that is making or unmaking but is never made. Music conceived of a linear model is essentially fixed in time. It is unable to recognize or respond to the becoming of interactive exchange, which is marked by frequent and unpredictable transformation.

More specifically, it will focus on "Interactive Music". Interactivity in music has been developed and experimented upon since the early 1990's, and has many other applications besides its use in computer games. For instance, there are "Interactive Music Performances" and "Interactive Compositions" etc. Such areas of interactivity will not be explored and are too broad a topic to mention in this article. For the purposes of explaining concepts and ideas, comparisons will be drawn with media such as film, as they have some important similarities with computer games but are perhaps better understood and on the whole more accessible.
