Major threats to bridges primarily consist of the aging of the structural elements, earthquake-induced shaking and standing waves generated by windstorms. The necessity of information on the state of health of structures in real-time, allowing for timely warnings in the case of damaging events, requires structural health monitoring (SHM) systems that allow the risks of these threats to be mitigated. Here we present the results of a short-duration experiment carried out with low-cost wireless instruments for monitoring the vibration characteristics and dynamic properties of a strategic civil infrastructure, the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City. -

The paper discusses: (1) Structure and framework conditions of the German media (a historical review of the mass media since 1945); (2) Press (including its particular reliance on local news and the creation of the world status media group, Bertelsmann AG);(3) News agencies and public relations work (which insure a "never-ending stream" of information);(4) Radio and Television (with emphasis on the Federal Republic's surprisingly large number of radio stations--public, commercial, and "guest");(5) New communication paths and media (especially communication and broadcasting satellites and cable in wideband-channel networks);(6) The profession of journalist (which still relies on on-the-job training rather than university degrees); and (7) Help for the media in the Third World (professional training in Germany of journalists and technical experts from underdeveloped countries appears to be the most appropriate way to promote Third World media). -

Kuchinke*, Julia Pannicke× Abstract: There are numerous studies analyzing factors of success in media-broadcasted artistic con- tests, especially music competitions. However, one factor that is generally neglected in the literature is the quality of the artistic performances (i.e. “music quality”). In this paper, we approach this re- search gap by developing two novel concepts of music quality and by employing unique measures during the empirical analysis of a popular German music television contest in order to analyze how different dimensions of the music and performance quality influences the final voting results. We use the complete historical voting dataset of the music contest from its inception in 2005 until its last broadcast in 2015, collecting 2,816 observations in total. First, we define dimensions of “objective quality” according to insights from musicological research/literature. Second, we conceptualize di- mensions of “subjective quality” because music preferences may be subjective and are not necessarily based on how experts’ define “good” music. We measure these subjective dimensions in an experi- mental setting with students from two German universities. -

The opening of the new, 175-km long German stretch between Cologne and Frankfurt brings the completion rate of the PBKAL project up to 56 %. On all remaining sections in Belgium (Brussels – German and Brussels -Dutch border), the Netherlands (Amsterdam – Belgian border) and the United Kingdom (Channel Tunnel – London), construction works are well under way, and overall completion of the PBKAL project is aimed at for 2006/2007. -

Sainte Hélène du Lac (Savoie, France), 22 February 2016 (after market close) MND: LST awarded renovation contract for Paris Montmartre funicular The MND Group (FR0011584549, MND), an innovative developer of mountain and urban mobility solutions, is listed on the Paris Euronext regulated market, compartment C. MND today announces that its subsidiary LST, a cable transport specialist and reputed ropeway designer and constructor, has been awarded the contract to renovate the Montmartre funicular railway by Paris public transport operator RATP. For LST, this is a major icon in the world of urban cable transport, as the funicular is the busiest in the world, carrying around four million passengers a year. The three-year contract covers the complete overhaul of the two machineries of the funicular lines and major inspections of the two cars. One of the many challenges involved in this highly technical renovation operation is to ensure continuous service during the work, which will be fit into a very narrow time frame between the end of the Montmartre harvest festival in October and the start of the Christmas holidays. The project therefore requires tight planning of on-site operations. Roland Didier, MND’s Deputy General Manager, made the following comments: “We are particularly proud to have won this iconic contract thanks to the efficient technical solution we were able to offer. It will strengthen our positioning in the urban cable transport sector, a hive of opportunities for which MND Group has renewed its product range and developed its innovative CABLINE system. The Vauban Circular Walk The Vauban Circular Walk The Vauban circuit takes visitors through the historic parts of the city of Luxembourg to the points of strategic importance in one of Europe’s most impressive fortresses, through old city gates and dark casemates, across large fortified bridges to caponiers and a series of bastions. The circuit bears the name of the famous French military engineer, active during the reign of Louis XIV, Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707). Appointed commissioner for fortifications at the age of just twenty-two, Vauban built or enlarged more than 160 fortresses in total. When he arrived in Luxembourg with the French enemy troops, the Spanish held sovereignty over the fortified city, which from the Middle Ages onward had been ruled by a number of foreign powers in turn. Highly experienced in warfare, Vauban was entrusted with the technical control of the siege of Luxembourg by the French in 1684. After the capture of the fortified city, he oversaw the reconstruction work on the fortress, turning it into the “Gibraltar of the North”, one of Europe's mightiest fortresses of the age. Even though the fortress was almost totally demolished (starting in 1867), the reconstruction work and the addition of forts, redoubts and barracks built by Vauban between 1685 and 1688 with the help of 3,000 labourers, earned the city View over the old town the prestige it still enjoys today. In 1994, sections of the forti- fications and the Old Town were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following the traces of Vauban (General Commissioner for Fortifications), you will discover sites that bear witness to Luxembourg’s military past, experience the medieval charm of the old Lower Town of Pfaffenthal and, from the fortified heights, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
