Objektif kajian ini ialah mengkaji keberkesanan penggunaan bahasa termasuk dialek dalam dialog yang dapat difahami dan diterima umum. Hasil kajian mendapati penggunaan pelbagai bahasa seperti Bahasa Cina, Bahasa Inggeris, Bahasa Melayu dan dialek seperti Bahasa Hokkien dapat membantu penonton mengenali budaya sesuatu tempat. Hasil kajian ini telah diaplikasikan dalam filem pendek yang berjudul, 武鬥 “Forced”. vii# ABSTRACT THE USAGE OF MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AND DIALECTS IN FILMS Tan Su Peng This research aims to identify the usage of multiple languages and dialects in films. The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the usage of languages including dialects in the dialogues that can be understood and accepted. This research found that the usage of multiple languages (Chinese, English, and Malay) and dialect (Hokkien) could help the audience to identify the cultural of certain place. This research has been applied in a short film entitled, 武鬥 “Forced”. viii# CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Malaysia and Singapore are multiracial, multicultural, and multireligious countries since centuries ago. They are very special and unique countries in Asia as the citizen can accept each other and living in a harmonic society although they come from different backgrounds with their own languages. Based on Oxford Dictionaries, Chinese means “a native or inhabitant of China, or a person of Chinese descent, or the language of China”. (Chinese, n.d.). This ethnic can be related to China or its people, culture or language. They have the significance in their lifestyle and languages, which is different from the other ethnics. The migration of the Chinese to Malaya can be traced back to eighteenth and nineteenth century or even further. “In earlier time most of the Chinese migrants had been traders or shopkeepers, but now there was a growing emphasis on miners and agriculturalists. (Andaya.B.W & Andaya.L.Y, 1982: 97). The Chinese in Malaya comes from different states in China such as Fujian, Guangdong, Teochew, Henghua, Foochow and many more. At the very beginning, they came to Malaya as traders and shopkeepers. However, most the migrants of Chinese to Malaysia were became the miners and agriculturalists during 1980s. ! 1! According to Natesan, “the major reason for the Chinese emigration is because starvation, war and political corruption in mainland China.” (Natesan, 2013). They migrated to other places like Malaya was to escape the life of grinding poverty in China and searching for the wealth in other places during the wars. During that time, they served as coolies and work for the British government. Due to the migration of the Chinese, the Chinese culture had been brought along when they came to this new society. As they come from different provinces in China, different types of Chinese cultures, languages, and dialects have been introduced in Malaya to the others races. Nowadays, most of the Chinese still maintaining and preserving their own cultures and languages through many activities such as “ Ai FM is the radio station which airs news in Teo Chew, Hakka, Cantonese and Hokkien daily”. (Ng, 2010). This is a way to learn different types of dialect through the news announced by the radio station. In film industry, there are filmmakers who used different types of languages such as Mandarin, English, Malay, and dialects (Hokkien, Cantonese, and so on.) in the films such as Sepet (2005) by Yasmin Ahmad and Spinning Gasing (2002) by Teck Tan. “The films used different ethnic languages such as Malay, Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin and English to correctly capture a slice of real Malaysian life as opposed to a glossed-over version favoured by certain bureaucrats”. (Wee, 2006: 6). This is a good phenomenon in the film industry. The Chinese filmmakers, Chiu Keng Guan and Jack Neo have used different types of languages in their films, such as Great Day (2011), Woohoo (2010), and I Not Stupid Too (2006). Both of them have inserted the local languages and dialects, which ! 2! can represent the society of the country into their films. Hence, their films can be considered as local films, which the stories are based on the local society and cultures. Their films may not be well received or hit the box office outside the countries, but it is a good opportunity to promote Malaysia and Singapore’s cultures to the other countries. Vernacular languages (dialects) play an important role in the Chinese films in both Malaysia and Singapore. As in Oxford Dictionaries, dialect means, “a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group.” (Dialect, n.d.).

    Intercultural Communication Studies XIX: 1 2010 Lin & Tan How Cultural and Linguistic Pluralism Shape Humor: Social Construction of Singapore’s Humor Industry Trisha T. C. Lin & Phoebe Shu Wei Tan, Nanyang Technological University This study views Singapore’s humor industry through the theoretic lenses of social construction. It aims to examine the unique characteristics of Singapore humor and investigate how Singapore’s rojak culture (Chua, 1998) and social actors (content creator, market/audience, and government/policy) have shaped the trajectory of the humor industry. Data were collected through interviews with TV comedy producers, stand-up comedians, and theatre practitioners, as well as through three-month-long observation of local comedy scenes. Thematic data analysis (Miles & Huberman, 1994) was used to analyze transcribed interviews, observational field notes, and second-hand documents. The findings show Singapore humor is characterized by over-the-top visuals, frequent use of “Singlish” and Chinese dialects, satires of current affairs, and influences from western culture. The fear of failure, mianzi (Hwang, Francesco & Kessler, 2003), is Singapore’s cultural trait that hinders the development of Singapore’s humor industry. Its humor content creation relies on a formulaic approach, in order to cater for the perceived needs of mainstream audiences. Moreover, the content censorship, which serves as a crucial means to maintain order and harmony in this multicultural and multiracial society, still restricts creativity in humor creation and partially accounts for the lackadaisical Singapore humor industry. Humor is an innately complicated social phenomenon which can be found universally in all cultures, and plays a central, necessary part in social life (Billig, 2005).

    December 14, 2020 The future of ‘Ghost Island’ and the enduring legacy of late President Lee Teng-hui Edition 5, 2020 Dr Roger Lee Huang DOI: In one of Taiwan’s most popular songs of this year, Ghost Island (鬼島), alongside Taiwanese rapper Dwagie, Malaysian singer-songwriter Namewee satirises the excesses of ‘democracy and human rights’ as ‘gross impropriety,’ welcoming listeners to a land where freedom of speech is ‘blasphemy to the leaders.’ The song plays on the endearing yet self-depreciating slang for Taiwan, ‘Ghost Island’, which adeptly captures its wonderful contradictions: rowdy and confident which regularly punches above its weight internationally in the face of hostility from People’s Republic of China (PRC, China), while consistently dejected for its exclusion from the international community. The song exudes pride in Taiwan’s uniquely ‘chaotic’ democracy, but implicit is a sense of both despair and fear of an aggressively nationalistic China. What Taiwan’s democracy means today is deeply connected to the actions of the late President Lee Teng-hui, who died on July 30, 2020. As both the first Taiwanese president of the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), and the first president to be directly elected via universal suffrage, Lee was instrumental in leading Taiwan to a peaceful democratic transition. With such a heady mix of cultural elements to explore, it is often natural that the many groups stumble upon ‘rare gems’ that reflect their ‘Malaysianess’. Have Malaysians really ever appreciated the many and varied aspects of culture that they are seemingly suddenly thrown into? Do we embrace these happily or are we constantly rejecting them? Fortunately, through the medium of film, we are, from time to time, allowed to reflect on our obvious similarities and even more apparent disparities. In this paper, we explore the culture and perceptions of people from the major ethnic groups that are the human base of this very country. When was it we have last laughed at ourselves … heartily? Nasi Lemak 2.0 provides an interesting, if not disturbing insight into the workings of the Malaysian ‘mind’. Nasi Lemak 2.0 was released on 8th September 2011 and impacted a whole generation of Malaysians. The characters have been well chosen and have done a wonderful job of being representations of the various communities in this nation. Ethnocentrism is a reality and often rears its head, ‘ugly’ or otherwise in several situations. Are we able to grapple with the levels of ethnocentrism that we encounter? These are some of the issues that will trigger much debate and discussion among ourselves and perhaps also reflect our cores. This paper aims to explore and describe the recent phenomenon of English code-switching in modern Malay songs. 25 modern Malay songs were selected and analysed using Content Analysis. The analysis was made based on Poplack’ Theory as well as the functions of code-switching proposed by Appel and Musyken. Two types of code- switching commonly used in modern Malay songs were discovered. They were intrasentential and intersentential code-switching. The classification of the functions of code-switching was then made based on the six functions of code-switching, which are referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic. The findings of this research also indicate other functions of code-switching that demonstrate bilingual creativity among songwriters in Malaysia. In conclusion, the findings of this study indicated that code switching in Modern Malay songs is not just a random switch from one code to another but carries certain social functions that emphasize on the establishment of people’s intimacy, solidarity and local identity.
