Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Celebrates the Sounds of Black History FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Celebrates the Sounds of Black History Throughout February Virtual programs and events include Rock Hall Inductee Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire, members of Sly & the Family Stone, Patti LaBelle, Robert Randolph of The Family Band, and Jackie Venson CLEVELAND (February 3, 2021) – The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is celebrating Black History Month with a series of virtual events and programs honoring the extraordinary contributions that African Americans have made to rock & roll music. Fans can also head to the museum, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, to amplify their experience with the Rock Hall’s featured exhibit “It’s Been Said All Along: Voices of Rage, Hope & Empowerment.” A cornerstone to the Rock Hall's programs and outreach, the Black History Month celebration highlights stories, provides opportunities for dialogue, and reflects on the contributions and legacies of African American artists. Inspired by the sounds of Black history, the Rock Hall’s virtual events and programs include: Every Friday in February New Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Vault podcast episodes Subscribe on the iHeart Radio App, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your favorite podcasts Throughout February enjoy new podcast episodes honoring the legacies of African American Inductees with unfiltered access to iconic Induction speeches. Monday, February 8th Rock Hall spotlights MARTK’D winning sneaker Rock & Roll Hall of Fame MARTK’D powered by Yellowbrick teamed up with the Rock Hall and Cleveland Cavaliers Diversity and Inclusion Department for a real time design competition themed around teaming up for change. The winning sneaker is being featured within the Rock Hall’s “It’s Been Said All Along: Voices of Rage, Hope & Empowerment” exhibit and amplifies the exhibit’s commentary on social injustice and inspires communities to unite. Thursday, February 11th at 7 p.m. EST Jackie Venson performance and interview Follow and watch on Rock Hall’s Facebook and YouTube pages Texas native Jackie Venson, the first African-American woman to win the category of “Best Guitarist” at the Austin Music Awards last year, performs a virtual 30-minute live set and post-show interview with Jason Hanley, Rock Hall’s Vice President of Education and Visitor Engagement, discussing her trailblazing career. Thursday, February 18th at 7 p.m. EST Mr. Soul Documentary screening and panel discussion with Inductee Verdine White and Patti LaBelle RSVP at https://www.rockhall.com/events From 1968 to 1973, the public television variety show SOUL! Offered an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of Black literature, poetry, music and politics – voices that had few other options for national exposure. These works are part of a wave of new writing on Black women in rock and pop that sheds light on how dominant views of gender, race, sexuality, and genre affected not only their careers, but how their stories were minimized or written out of music history. Presented in partnership with Case Western Reserve University's Center for Popular Music Studies. Friday, February 26th at 7 p.m. EST Robert Randolph performance and interview Follow and watch on Rock Hall’s Facebook and YouTube pages Tune in for a virtual premier of the Rock Hall’s conversation and performance with Robert Randolph of The Family Band. Randolph discusses his Gospel roots and more with Jason Hanley, Rock Hall’s Vice President of Education and Visitor Experience, and performs a few songs from the Rock Hall’s Klipsch Audio Stage on his pedal steel guitar.     Back In Time Over the course of her remarkable career thus far, singer/ songwriter Judith Hill has shared her musical gifts in a variety of ways. The Los Angeles native has been a background singer for such legends as Stevie Wonder, Ringo Starr, and the late Michael Jackson, serving as the latter’s duet partner on the classic ballad, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” which later became a highlight of Jackson’s posthumously released film This Is It. (Hill’s deeply moving performance of “Heal the World” was an indelible moment during the singer’s public memorial service.) She also appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of several acclaimed background singers, including Hill, who earned a Grammy Award for “Best Music Film” for her participation. Post-This Is It, Hill appeared on The Voice, where she began to cement her identity as a solo artist with a series of knockout performances that showed her ability to put her own distinctive, captivating spin on familiar songs. Hill’s global fanbase has gotten to know her through these high-profile performances. However her biggest champion these days, yet another music legend, did not. “Prince did not see me on This Is It. He had not seen 20 Feet from Stardom. He had not seen me on The Voice. He saw me on some random TV interview where I was asked who I’d want to collaborate with and I said him,” Hill says with a laugh.     The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh 57 DANCE TO THE MUSIC, Sly and the Family Stone Written and produced by Sly Stone Epic 10256 1968 Billboard: #8 I first heard "Dance to the Music" in a high school lunch line when a friend thrust a pocket-size transistor at my ear. "You won't believe this," he said. Who could've? Except for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," no great single has broken so many rules and reestablished them in its own image. Sly found a funky equivalent of the white rock artiness of the Who and the Yardbirds -- without losing a shred of R&B's danceability. The lyric simply describes what's happening in the song, starting from scratch and adding one instrument at a time to build up a powerhouse of psychedelic R&B, replete with call-and-response vocals, briefly interjected solos, interspersed cries of surprised glee, and a beat.that bulldozes everything in its path. It's all so joyous that it's easy to miss the "message" declared by horn players Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini: " All the squares go home!" "Dance to the Music" arrived at the instant when black and white pop achieved their greatest closeness and began to move apart again, after more than a decade of frequently harmonious intersection. Since then, from Kool and the Gang to Prince, Sly and "Dance to the Music" have never been far away, and as the nineties open, their influence on pop dance music is as strong as anyone's -- even James Brown's.
