Ligament internal, attached to a central triangular pit, with lateral extensions. Sculpture of concentric ridges and lines with a few irregular radiating ribs on the left valve which do not normally meet or indent the margin. Hinge line without teeth in the adult. Shell margins smooth. Colour white, dirty white or brown, sometimes with dark purple markings. Periostracum thin, dark brown; interior of shell white; adductor muscle scar near the posterior margin, a deep purple or red-brown. Fecal and pseudofecal material is important in sediment production and deposition, providing sites for remineralizing bacterial action, and as food source for deposit feeders.Swimming larvae have positive phototaxis, which becomes negative with increased temperature. Interest to Fisheries American oysters are prominent members of the benthic community in Chesapeake Bay (USA) and contribute substantially to the economy of the region. Oysters have recently experienced severe declines in abundance. Intense fishing pressure, loss of habitat, and water quality degradation have been blamed for declines in the abundance of this species. Its meat is not highly sought after by European consumers. Resource very important in Gulf of Mexico (Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Tabasco). The total catch reported for this species to FAO for 1999 was 132 207 t. The countries with the largest catches were USA (89 714 t) and Mexico (39 268 t). Marketed fresh. It is preyed upon by sea stars, drills, crabs, flatworms, fishes (such as drums and rays), oyster-catchers, scoters, and other sea ducks as well as man. SQUIRES Department of Geological Sciences, California State University, Northridge, California 91330, USA Abstract. The malleid bivalve Nayadina (Exputens) has Old World Tethyan affinities but is known only from Eocene deposits in North America. Nayadina (Exputens) is reported for the first time from Mexico. About 50 specimens of N. (E.) batequensis sp. nov. were found in warm-water nearshore deposits of the middle lower Eocene part of the Bateque Formation, just south of Laguna San Ignacio, on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur. The new species shows a wide range of morphologic variability especially where the beaks and auricles are located and how much they are developed. A review of the other species of Exputens, namely Nayadina (E.) llajasensis (Clark, 1934) from California and N. (E.) ocalensis (MacNeil, 1934) from Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, revealed that they also have a wide range of morphologic variability. Nayadina (E.) alexi (Clark, 1934) is shown, herein, to be a junior synonym of N. (E.) llajasensis. The presence of a byssal sinus is recognized for the first time in Exputens. An epifaunal nestling mode of life, with attachment by byssus to hard substrate, can now be assumed for Exputens. INTRODUCTION species. Scanning electronic observations show that morphogenetic processes result in a gastrula with two depressions 4 hours after fertilization (T0 + 4h). Two hours later, one depression, located at the animal pole, develops into an open cave, the floor of which becomes the shell field located below the lower face of the prototrochal pad. The invagination located at the vegetal pole features the blastopore. At T0 + 6h, the late gastrula has differentiated into a typi- cal motile trochophore with a shell field synthetizing the organic part of the shell. At T0 + 8h, the shell field, located between the prototroch and the telotroch, appears as a saddle-shaped region with a wrinkled surface extending on both sides of the embryo, establishing bilateral symmetry. At T0 + 12h, the prototroch slides toward the anterior region by outgrowth of the shell material. At T0 + 18h, the prodissoconch I formation is completed and the D-stage larvae possess a calcified shell. At this stage of development, the functional velum is composed of four bands of cilia.

Among- the Carboniferous faunas examined in the course of investi- gations connected with othcial work, 1 have been hnl to recognize a large numl)er of undescribed species and some genera, which in most cases it did not seem appropi'iate to make known in connection with the studies that brouglit them into notice. Thei'e remains, how- ever, a collection very miscellaneous in character and not germane to any of the papers now in view. A few of the generic types it is here proposed to describe and name. (1987) 242, 505-510 (Printed in Great Britain) 505 Chemical taxonomy of the hinge-ligament proteins of bivalves according to their amino acid compositions Yasuo KIKUCHI* and Nobuo TAMIYA Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Tohoku University Aobayama, Sendai 980, Japan The proteins in the hinge ligaments of molluscan bivalves were subjected to chemotaxonomic studies according to their amino acid compositions. The hinge-ligament protein is a new class of structure proteins, and this is the first attempt to introduce chemical taxonomy into the systematics of bivalves. The hinge-ligament proteins from morphologically close species, namely mactra (superfamily Mactracea) or scallop (family Pectinidae) species, showed high intraspecific homology in their compositions. On the other hand, inconsistent results were obtained with two types of ligament proteins in pearl oyster species (genus Pinctada). The results of our chemotaxonomic analyses were sometimes in good agreement with the morphological classifications and sometimes inconsistent, implying a complicated phylogenetic relationship among the species. The Sakmara River has an abundant bivalve population and a highly variable flow regime which, at low flow, allowed much of the channel bed to be examined. A large data set of 1013 shells (Unio sp.) was examined and these were shown to have consistent patterns of orientation, aspect, shell abrasion, perforation and fracture. The close spatial relationship between areas of shell abrasion, shell perforation and shell fracture showed that they form part of a continuum whereby areas of abrasion evolve into perforations and perforations coalesce and enlarge into fractures. The mechanism of shell damage proposed is one of abrasion in place, whereby the shell remains stationary on the surface of the point bar and is impacted by bedload. Underpinning this process are the hydrodynamic properties of the bivalve shell, with consistency in the orientation and aspect of the valve in a flowing current producing consistency in the distribution of damage on the shell surface.

    LABORATORY REARING OF THE LARVAE OF THE MAHOGANY DATE MUSSEL LITHOPHAGA BISULCATA JOHN L. CULLINEYl Duke University Marine Laboratory, Beaufort, North Carolina 28516 ABSTRACT Although adults of Lithophaga bisulcata did not spawn readily in the laboratory, fertilized eggs were obtained after six adventitious spawnings of captive adults. Larvae, developing from these eggs, were reared through pelagic stages in the laboratory. Eggs were 64p, in diameter, the gastrula 66p, long, and the trochophore 67p. X 57p,. Shelled stages in- creased in length from 92p, to 400p, during pelagic development, and a broad umbo appeared when larvae were between l40p, and 160p. long. The hinge structure of the larval shell consisted of a series of taxodont teeth at either end of the hinge line. Shelled larva did not possss an apical flagellum. Trochophores and straight-hinge larvae appeared positively phototactic. Pediveligers developed large eyespots and were able to delay metamorphosis for at least one month. Larvae resembled larvae of Modiolus demissus much more than those of Mytilus edulis, but had a broader umbo and more rounded ventral margin. Also, in older larvae of L. bisulcata, the umbo appeared to shift anteriorly from the midline. INTRODUCTION The mahogany date mussel, Lithophaga bisulcata Orbigny, is a small, bullet-shaped member of the family Mytilidae. It bores into calcium carbonate material in shallow marine and estuarine waters. Adults are commonly 1 to 1.5 inches long.
