Have we ever before had such reason to contemplate, with bitterness and animosity, the nature of winter in Saskatchewan? Well, in all probability, many of you would say, ‘Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. This is nothing compared to the winter of ‘47 or ‘53 or ‘61 . . .” However, I was not around in the ‘40s; nor am I able to com- mentate on the winters of the ‘50s, ‘60s or even the ‘70s. (Okay, I just had to slip that last one in there. I was born in the ‘70s, but too young to remember any- thing from that decade!) I cannot even dwell on the winters of the ‘80s, as being a teenager through those years meant I was automatically immune to all weather-related phenom- ena. (That immunity was not just mine, by the way, and not just a thing of the past. It carries on in the genes of today’s teens every- where, which explains why they wear toques in the summer but not winter, and why they never get sick running to their car or to school or to the rink or downtown in a lightweight fl eece and untied shoes when the windchill takes the temperature down to -46˚C.) And so that leaves us the 1990s and 2000s, and based on exhaust- ive research through the archives of my brain, it took me no more than a few seconds to realize this is the worst stretch of wicked winter weather I have ever endured. I did a quick search online only to discover that, as recently as Dec. 12, we basked in a daytime temperature of -2.3˚C, but that day’s warm clime was obliterated from memory by the morning that greeted us Jan. 14, when with- out a windchill, we put forth meagre attempts at surviving -41.2˚.
