Jones stole in front 5-2 in the fifth end of the semi and rolled to a 7-5 victory over Spencer, setting up the final collision with Carey. In that fracas, Carey scored a fourth-end deuce after three blank ends but Jones replied with three in the fifth and stole a single in the sixth. Carey then tied it with a deuce but after a further exchange of singles it boiled down to Jones and the hammer in a tied situation going home. Of all the great things about Red Deer, I am most proud of our volunteers. More than 550 people from the Red Deer and surrounding area have stepped up to volunteer at this monumental event. I believe that this is a testament to the spirit of the volunteer. These people have gladly taken time from their daily routines to be an important part of the big picture. I’ve been lucky enough to talk to many of our volunteers so far, and all seem to be cut from the same selfless, patient, driven and curling-loving cloth. To those volunteers from Red Deer and area, thank you for welcoming our guests from across the country to our city and showing your Red Deer pride. To those volunteers outside of the Red Deer area, thank you for your dedication in coming to our city, and we look forward to working together to make this the best Tour- nament of Hearts yet! The Scotties has a lot in store for you this coming week! Friday started off with the Ford Hot Shot preliminaries; an individual skill-based challenge in which all players partici- pated. This is a chance for the players to demonstrate their skills as they attempt a series of curling shots for the grand prize of a lease on a Ford vehicle. If you were at the party on Friday night, then I hope your feet are as sore as mine from dancing! Friday’s opening party was an excellent way to lead into what we have to offer here for the rest of the week’s Heart Stop Lounge enter- tainment. The itinerary is chalk-full of exciting games, great entertain- ment and fun for the entire family. Be sure to take in as much as the action you can. Welcome to the Red Deer Scotties!
