Member of the Saskatoon Real Estate Association 4 • MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2009Editorial and Opinion THE WATROUS MANITOU Just Layzing Around One of my favourite pre- Christmas activities is making my wish list. I know that sounds kind of greedy and materialis- tic, but that’s not the attitude I go into it with. Honestly! I just like thinking of all the little things I see during the year that I never pick up for myself. I’m not a shopper or spender, as you could guess by looking at the state of my wardrobe. (I can hear my friends’ collective heads rattling right now as they nod vigorously in agreement!) So my wish list is wide- ranging and rather bizarre, containing such items as ‘travel- sized packages of kleenex’, ‘hula-hoop’ and ‘new sweaters’. I don’t know why I feel the need to specify that it should be a ‘new’ sweater; surely, no one would go into my closet, select one of the fuzzballed items and wrap it, hoping I wouldn’t notice the difference! After reading Daniel’s story about various mayors’ reviews of what their communities experienced in 2009 (see page 20), I men- tally added a few more things to my wish list. They are not specifi c to me, but instead are what I refer to as an ‘if only’ list for Watrous. If only . . . Watrous had reverse osmosis water. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving. Our taps and faucets, showerheads and tub spouts, dishwashers, washing machines and water heaters all would look and perform to the best of their abilities. We could ditch our softeners and never have to lug a heavy bag - or four - of salt down into our basements. (That ‘we’ I refer to would actually mean ‘Robin’ - thanks, honey.) Water fi lters for under-sink RO systems would be a thing of the past. Under-sink RO systems would be a thing of the past, as would water coolers, jugs and a dozen other items people have made part of their kitchens and utility rooms due to Watrous’ water. Our white clothes would stay white - that is, “I warned him when he bought this parka if we owned any white clothes. Hey, maybe it would even help with it had way too many Velcro fasteners . . . ” the fuzzballs covering my sweaters! If only . . . someone would donate a few hundred thousand dol- lars to pay off the swimming pool. It’s a beautiful, necessary and much-appreciated public facility, and it would be great to burn the Christmas and chocolate: a holiday pairing mortgage, so to speak. If only . . . the walking trail could be lit from end to end. Or, Christmas is only a few chocolates wrapped in gold foil if only we had daylight from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., from April to days away but it seems as if Neighbourly resembling coins to children as October. My little niece Emma Rayne was born Dec. 15 to Derek and Lindsey and the future Flames fan - at least, that is what I think - is doing really well! All right, moving to curling and as promised last week, here is a look at the Roar of the Rings in Edmonton, which featured some incredible curling from the country’s top curlers. Saskatchewan was represented by Pat Simmons on the men’s side and Amber Holland and Stefanie Lawton on the women’s side. The week started off with some major upsets. What might have been a surprise for curling fans was Jen- nifer Jones and her rink were ousted early on and did not even advance to the playoffs.
