Antichrist Psychonaut: Nietzsche and Psychedelics – Peter Sjöstedt-H – ‘… And close your eyes with holy dread, For he on honey-dew hath fed, And drunk the milk of Paradise.’ So ends the famous fragment of Kubla Khan by the Romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He tells us that the poem was an immediate transcription of an opium-induced dream he experienced in 1797. As is known, the Romantic poets and their kin were inspired by the use of psychoactive substances such as opium, the old world’s common pain reliever. Pain elimination is its negative advantage, but its positive attribute lies in the psychedelic (‘mind- revealing’)1 state it can engender – a state described no better than by the original English opium eater himself, Thomas De Quincey: O just and righteous opium! … thou bildest upon the bosom of darkness, out of the fantastic imagery of the brain, cities and temples, beyond the art of Phidias and Praxiteles – beyond the splendours of Babylon and Hekatómpylos; and, “from the anarchy of dreaming sleep,” callest into sunny light the faces of long-buried beauties … thou hast the keys of Paradise, O just, subtle, and mighty opium!2 Two decades following the publication of these words the First Opium War commences (1839) in which China is martially punished for trying to hinder the British trade of opium to the Chinese people. Though opium, derived from the innocent garden poppy Papavar somniferum, may cradle the keys to Paradise it also clutches the keys to Perdition: its addictive thus potentially ruinous nature is commonly known. Today, partly for these reasons, opiates are mostly illegal without license – stringently so in their most potent forms of morphine and heroin. -

i 11 Parallel Lives: Plutarch's Lives, Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger (1405-1438) and the Art of Italian Renaissance Translation CHRISTOPHER S. CELENZA Before his premature death in 1438 of an outbreak of plague in Ferrara, the Florentine humanist and follower of the papal curia Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger left behind three main bodies of work in Latin, all still either unedited or incompletely edited: his own self-collected letters, a small number of prose treatises, and a sizeable corpus of Greek-to-Latin translations. This paper concerns primarily the last of these three aspects of his work and has as its evidentiary focus two autograph manuscripts that contain inter alia final versions of Lapo's Latin translations of Plutarch's Lives of Themistocles, Artaxerxes, and Aratus. In addition, however, to studying Lapo's translating techniques, this paper will address chiefly the complexities of motivation surrounding Lapo's choice of dedicatees for these translations. The range of circumstances will demonstrate, I hope, the lengths to which a young, little-known humanist had to go to support himself in an environment where there was as yet no real fixed, institutional place for a newly created discipline. Lapo and Translation: Patronage, Theory, and Practice Of the three areas mentioned, Lapo's translations represent the most voluminous part of his oeuvre and in fact it is to his translations that he owes his modem reputation. But why did this young humanist devote so much energy to translating? And why were Plutarch's Lives such an important part of his effort? An earlier version of this paper was delivered as an Oldfather Lecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on 8 November 1996. -

Traces of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Philosophy in Scandinavian Literature Crina LEON* Key-words: Scandinavian literature, Nietzschean philosophy, Georg Brandes, August Strindberg, Knut Hamsun 1. Introduction. The Role of the Danish Critic Georg Brandes The age of Friedrich Nietzsche in Scandinavia came after the age of Émile Zola, to whom Scandinavian writers such as Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg were indebted with a view to naturalistic ideas and attitudes. Friedrich Nietzsche appears to me the most interesting writer in German literature at the present time. Though little known even in his own country, he is a thinker of a high order, who fully deserves to be studied, discussed, contested and mastered (Brandes 1915: 1). This is what the Danish critic Georg Brandes asserted in his long Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism, which was published in August 1889 in the periodical Tilskueren from Copenhagen, and this is the moment when Nietzsche became to be known not only in Scandinavia but also in other European countries. The Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism was the first study of any length to be devoted, in the whole of Europe, to this man, whose name has since flown round the world and is at this moment one of the most famous among our contemporaries (Ibidem: 59), wrote Brandes ten years later. The term Aristocratic Radicalism had been previously used by the Danish critic in a letter he wrote to Nietzsche himself, from Copenhagen on 26 November 1887: …a new and original spirit breathes to me from your books […] I find much that harmonizes with my own ideas and sympathies, the depreciation of the ascetic ideals and the profound disgust with democratic mediocrity, your aristocratic radicalism […] In spite of your universality you are very German in your mode of thinking and writing (Ibidem: 63). -

Nietzsche and Feminism: Transvaluing Women in Thus Spoke Zarathustra Tamsin Lorraine We all know that Nietzsche is no feminist. Despite suggestions that have been made regarding Nietzsche's identification with the feminine, we know what he has to say about actual women, and we know the lengths to which Nietzsche goes to make sure that when he enacts the feminine, he does so in a manly manner.1 So, what does Nietzsche have to do with feminism? Can a feminist go to Nietzsche's texts for nourishment and inspiration, or is she bound to be turned away by the passages that deliberately belittle and exclude her? Can and should she excise these passages as expendable in order to applaud Nietzsche's affirmations of the feminine, or does this present yet another appropriation of women, one that should be resisted? In attempting to answer these questions, I hope not simply to affirm Nietzsche's relevance for feminism, but also to suggest a feminist style of listening and speaking, reading and writing, drawn from Nietzsche's texts. -

No, not unless Derrida continues to think and write in his spirit. I begin with this bald and bold claim because this "Discussion" is already overdue and I may get lost in my effort to recount and counter, report and reply. Therefore let there be no mistake: this is not merely a brilliant book on Heidegger, it is thinking in the grand style. Wholly in the spirit of Heidegger, but also spiriting him across borders into strange territories, in a spirit quite foreign to his, though whit as every thoughtful. " Spirit? And Heidegger,? \ The book shows ten sections. It spans Heidegger's Being and Time (1927) -- and the Trakl essay of 1953, "Die Sprache im Gedicht." Major way-stations include the rectoral address of 1933 and the Introduction to Metaphysics of 1935. Yet Derrida also manages to draw Heidegger's Nietzsche, Holderlin, and Schelling into his account, and to touch on scores of other themes and figures in the Heideggerian text. -

The Death of Tragedy: Examining Nietzsche’s Return to the Greeks Brian Long 1 Thesis Introduction In the study of philosophy, there are many dichotomies: Eastern philosophy versus Western philosophy, analytic versus continental, and so on. But none of these is as fundamental as the struggle between the ancients and the moderns. With the writings of Descartes, and perhaps even earlier with those of Machiavelli, there was a transition from “man in the world” to “man above the world.” Plato’s dialogues, Aristotle’s lecture notes, and the verses of the pre- Socratics are abandoned for having the wrong focus. No longer did philosophers seek to observe and question nature and man’s place in it; now the goal was mastery and possession of nature. -

As the preface to the Teseus-Romulus makes clear, Plutarch himself sees these mythological fgures as qualitatively different from his other biographical sub- jects, with the consequence that this particular pair of Lives serves as a limit case by which it is possible to elucidate the boundaries of Plutarch’s authorial identity. Tey present, moreover, a set of opportunities for him to demonstrate his ability to curate and present familiar material (the founding of Rome, Teseus in the labyrinth) in demonstration of his broad learning. To this end, I regard the Teseus-Romulus as a fundamentally integral text, both of whose parts should be read alongside one another and the rest of Plutarch’s corpus rather than as mere outgrowths of the tra- ditions about the early history of Athens and Rome, respectively.
