F P’ D “A Short Devout Method of Hearing Holy Mass with Profit”

Dear Friends, For the final weeks of our exposition on the Holy Mass, I wanted to share with you some tips from some saints on how to attend Holy Mass. The saints will be St. Leonard of Port-Maurice, St. Francis de Sales, and St. Louis Marie de Montfort – in that order. Today’s is taken from a beautiful little treatise on the Holy Mass, titled, “Hidden Treasure, The Holy Mass” by St. Leonard of Port-Maurice, an Italian Franciscan preacher and ascetic writer who died in 1751. I think that his words have a lot of common sense to them and hopefully help us to look upon the Holy Mass for what it is, which is much better than what we can want it to be. The section that I would like to highlight is titled, “A Short Devout Method of Hearing Holy Mass with Profit.” He begins by pointing to the other-worldliness of the Mass, as it was experienced and understood by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. He says, “it was the opinion of St. John Chrysostom (Homil. 3, incomp. Dei. Nat.), and his opinion was confirmed by St. Gregory in the fourth of his Dialogues, that while holy Mass is being celebrated by the priest, the heavens open and there descend from the celestial realm, many bands of angels to assist at the divine sacrifice.” This is a point to remember. St. Leonard calls this the proper perspective or method of assisting at mass. “Behold, then, the most proper method of assisting with fruit at holy Mass. Go to the church as if you were going to Calvary, and behave yourself before the altar as before the throne of God, in company with the holy angels. See what modesty, what reverence, what attention, are required from us in order that we may carry away the fruit and the blessings which Almighty God is desires to bestow on him who honors with devout demeanor these sacred mysteries.” St. Leonard continues by looking back at how much of a sacredly the Israelites held the moment of sacrifice: “We read that while the sacrifices of the Old Law were being offered by the Jews, sacrifices in which was offered nothing greater than bulls, lambs, and other animals, it was admirable to behold with what diligence, decorum, and silence the whole people assisted; and although there were numbers innumerable of those attending, besides the seven hundred ministers who sacrificed, yet, with all this, it seemed as if the temple were empty, not the very slightest noise, not even a breath, being heard.” Here is where his common sense comes into play. He observes that if the faithful of the Old Law held sacrifices with such veneration and respect, which, after all, “[they] were only a mere shadow, a simple figure of ours, what silence, what devotion, what attention, does not holy Mass deserve, in which the Immaculate Lamb Himself, the Divine Word, is offered for us in sacrifice!” What might be the realistic take-home message here? Knowing that we may not expect perfect external silence (nor should we chastise others for involuntary sounds, especially when they come from children), we may, however, continually strive for interior silence. In fact, we can remark that in our age of noise, distraction and short attention spans, we would do well to remind ourselves that we are in the presence of the Almighty and He deserves our attention, even if we have to struggle to give it to Him. I would like to conclude by allowing St. Leonard explain to you why he wrote these reflections: “It is simply to plant in the hearts of all those who shall read it a holy desire that there may be introduced into the Catholic world the practice of hearing holy Mass every day with the most solid piety and devotion, and that each time Mass is heard each hearer may make at least a spiritual Communion, if not also a sacramental Communion. Oh, the gain if this end were attained! I should then hope to witness, throughout the whole world, that holy fervor flourishing once more which was admired in the golden age of the primitive Church, when the faithful assisted every day at the holy sacrifice, and every day communicated sacramentally. If you are not worthy of such a privilege, oh, at least hear holy Mass every day, and every day communicate spiritually. If I succeed in gaining you who read me now, I shall imagine myself to have gained the whole world, and I shall consider my poor labor well laid out.” Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 W O L P! We invite you to join our parish family! So often, women and men impacted by pregnancy loss have suffered deep wounds, including powerful feelings of abandonment, shame, anger, and loss. Since there is carefully guarded secrecy around pregnancy loss, these hidden, painful, emotions may cause other struggles such as substance abuse, bonding issues with children, depression, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and feelings of unworthiness.
