St. Jude The Apostle From Our Pastor’s Desk Church ! A recent Pew research revealed the startling fact that a large percentage of practicing, www.stjudelewes.org ! church going Catholics do NOT have the same faith in the Eucharist as the Church. ! While [email protected] ! Catholicism affirms the Most Blessed Sacrament as the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of ! the Risen Christ (notice the carefully chosen capital letters), many worshippers mistakenly PARISH OFFICE ! think they are receiving just blessed bread and wine. ! I suspect there are many reasons for this. ! 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! One is “indifferentism,” the notion that all religions are pretty much the same and, 302 644 7300 ! after all, “we worship the same God.” ! That’s just not correct. ! The one, true God we adore is Fax: 302 644 7415 ! Creator and Father, Whose Incarnate Son is the physical Presence of the Divine in our world ! and Whose Spirit fills our hearts. ! Our God is the Most Blessed Trinity, while Unitarians do Pastor: Rev. Thomas Flowers ! not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ. ! Our heavenly Father has an only begotten Son, ! while the Allah of does not. ! ! Assoc. Pastor: Rev. Jones Kukatla ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another problem is the false distinction between “spiritual” and “religious.” ! We ! often hear people insist, “I’m spiritual, but I don’t care for religion.” ! The spiritual yearning of Deacons: ! Bill McGann ! the human soul is a search for Something and Someone larger than ourselves. ! Religion is ! ! Marty Barrett ! what helps us discover and develop our spiritual self. ! All too often, a dichotomy between “spiritual” and “religious” re- ! ! Al Barros ! sults in a spirituality that is self centered and cut off from the family of faith, the community ! of human fellowship. ! ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! It’s easy to confuse or mislead people from the truth when we are careless in our Business Mgr: Bob Hearn language. ! For example, I have sometimes heard an Extraordinary Minister say, “There is a lot ! ! ! ! of wine left over.” There cannot be any wine left over, because there is no more wine after the Office Director: Nancy Seaver consecration. ! What looks, and smells, and tastes like wine is truly the Blood of the Risen ! ! ! ! One. S ome Protestant congregations have adopted use of the word Eucharist, even t hough Executive Secretary: their service book uses the word “Communion” for the blessed bread they share. ! ! Carol Turoczy ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! Careless, too, can be our actions. I have seen priests who are very casual in their manner at the altar. ! I have seen worshippers pop the Host into their mouth as if it were a Office Assistant: Judy Gibson ! ! ! ! cookie or a cracker. Mass Etiquette: 20 Things To Do And Not Do In Mass ! ! Fast before Mass. !It is Church law that one fasts for at least 1 hour before receiving Holy Communion. Water and medicine can be con- sumed, of course. The purpose is to help us prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. !! No Food and Drink in Church. The exceptions would be water for the priest or choir (if discreet) and water for those who are ill. Bringing a snack into church is not appropriate, because we want to set the church apart as a place of prayer and reflection. ! Men take your hats off. It is impolite to wear a hat into a church for a man. While this is a cultural norm, it is one that we ought to fol- low closely. Just as we take off hats for the Pledge of Allegiance, we do so in church too; as a sign of respect. ! Don’t chew gum in church. !It breaks your fast, it’s distracting, it is consider impolite in a formal setting, and it doesn’t help us pray better. Can you imagine the popping gum during Mass? ! ! Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leaving the church. This is a reminder of our Baptism, which made us members of Christ’s Church. Just try to remain mindful of what is happening when you do so and don’t do it without saying a prayer. ! Besides, you receive a special blessing, called an indulgence, for blessing yourself with holy water. ! ! Dress modestly and appropriately. !Wear your Sunday Best. As Catholics we believe that God comes down to meet us at every Mass. So, why would we not dress up? !! Show up at least a few minutes early. If for some reason you can’t be on time, then try to sit in the back so you don’t disturb others. Getting to Mass early allows you to pray and prepare yourself better for Mass. ! Cell phones should never be used in Mass for calls or texting. The exceptions are emergencies (big ones, not everyday ones) and if you do use one, please walk out of church to do so. Also, if you are using the phone for readings or prayers, this is appropriate, but try to be discreet. ! Don’t sit on the end of the pew if you sit down before others. Rather, sit in the middle so others don’t have to climb over you. Fur- thermore M Gentlemen offer their seats to a any lady (elderly, disabled, etc) who must stand. !Some churches, like ours, get packed. If you strongly prefer to sit on the end, show common courtesy by standing to let others enter the pew. !! ! When we enter and leave Church, genuflect toward the Tabernacle . Christ is present for our sake. By allowing our right knee to hit the floor, we !acknowledge !He is our Lord and God. If someone is physically unable to genuflect, then a profound bow is sufficient. Dur- ing Mass, if you pass in front of the altar or tabernacle, bow reverently. ! Please be quiet while in church . Once you enter the sanctuary M it is not the time or place to visit with those around you. If you must talk do so as quietly and briefly as possible. Remember that your conversation might be disturbing someone who is in prayer, which is much more important. Sssshhhhhhhh. ! Even in the vestibule, speak quietly; the hard surfaces reflect the sound, and, when doors open for people to enter, we don’t want to distract people trying to prayer before Mass. ! ! Take loud children to the back. Every parent knows that sometimes the baby is going to have a bad day. Don’t make everyone else’s day bad as well. Sit on the end of a pew, if you can, and take the child to the back quickly. Don’t wait too long before you make a move. There is no reason to be !embarrassed !about having to quiet your child in the back of the church. It is worse to allow them to disturb Mass continually. ! (All of this does not refer to the baby who makes a little peep, but rather the child who is making loud noise. ! Re- member: ! you may be able to tune out your children, but others are not able to do so. ! Also, people are trying to hear the readings and the homily.) ! Prepare your offering before Mass. Christ tells us not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you make your offering. Slowing down the movement of the basket across the pew holds up the entire Mass, as we do not bring up the bread and wine until we also have the baskets ready. ! No bulletin reading during Mass. Imagine if you invited a guest to your house and before dinner (or during) they decided to read a magazine instead of talking to you. That is what is happening in God’s house when you read the bulletin. ! (It’s like those folks who play with their phone while they are at dinner with others in a restaurant: rude!) ! ! Respect Boundaries others may have. You might want to hold hands to pray, they may not. They might be sick and not want to shake hands for the sign of peace. These are all !OK. Do not make any !unnecessary !judgment because they worship differently. ! ! Bow before receiving Holy Communion. If it is God, then show your respect with a bow of the head. This is an ancient practice that has continued until this day. ! ! Do not receive from the chalice if you are sick. !This is an act of charity and it is not necessary to receive in order to receive the entire- ty of Jesus’ Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. ! Do not leave early. We should stay to the end of the recession and the hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. While there are certain- ly exceptions to this guideline, most who leave early don’t need to and ought not to. ! The closing hymn is a prayer; even if you don’t sing yourself, you should open the song book and read the words as others sing them. ! Pray after Mass, if you feel called to do so. It is a good custom, though not required, to offer a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass is over. !! Leave quietly. We encourage you to visit with others, but once you are outside of the main sanctuary of the church so you won’t disturb others who want to stay and pray. Again, some folks are trying to pray privately after the liturgy, so speaking in the vestibule should be soft. ! So, please leave quietly and then have then visit afterward. ! ! Page 7

The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal was conducted in all diocesan parishes the weekend of April 6 and 7. St. Jude The Apostle is truly blessed with many generous people, who, despite many economic challenges, have supported this year’s campaign with their pledges and gifts. To date, pledges of $141,173 has been received representing 98.72% of our parish’s $143,000 goal. ! If you have given to this year’s campaign, please know that your participation is gratefully appreciated. If you have not yet done so, please consider supporting this important effort with a pledge or one time contribution. It is never too late to participate. ! The diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal provides financial support that enables more than thirty five ministries throughout our dio- cese to bring a glimpse of God into the lives of many. The Appeal is an effective way for the diocese to advance the mission of Christ: to feed and house the poor; to minister to the sick and discouraged; to educate our young; and encourage strong, healthy families. ! If you would like more information about the Annual Catholic Appeal, go to www.cdow.org /annualcatholicappeal. ! May God bless you for your goodness! ! Annual Catholic Appeal ! Our parish is behind in reaching the goal set by our Diocese of $143,000. To date we have received contributions of $111,353. Our parishioners have always been most generous in their financial support and especially the Annual Catholic Appeal. This past year we achieved $160,799 in donations which exceeded the goal by $25,799. Fortunately, because we support Most Blessed Sacrament regional Elementary school with $17,500, all the mon- ies over our goal came back to our parish. ! We feel that our initial appeal on the week of April 6 and 7 did not reach many of our people as the presentation occurred 15 minutes before the start of mass. Perhaps this is the reason for our shortfall.! It is important for our parish to meet our goal. If not, the parish will need to write a check to make up the difference. This will mean that monies from our parish operations (offertory collections) will be needed. ! To sure up our shortfall we will be making a second appeal on the weekend of September 7 th and 8 th followed by a second collection. If you have al- ready made a generous donation we are most appreciative. Those who may have missed the first appeal, we would be grateful for your support. Enve- lopes will be in each pew this week and next. Please help us make this chartable endeavor a success .! Page 8

Safety and Security If anyone is interested in joining us as an Observer to continue to keep St. Jude safe, please feel free to contact me. ! This article will appear throughout the summer to inform our many guests and visitors some of the measures taken to enhance your safe- ty when on St. Jude’s property, particularly during weekend Masses. We continue to hear of senseless shootings at schools, churches, public office buildings and shopping centers. ! All Church exterior doors will be locked to anyone entering the Church at the beginning of Mass. Should you arrive late, you may only enter through the front door closest to the parking lot. You will be permitted entry by an Observer. The Observers are volunteers who have had some training to be alert for anyone or anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. The Observers are in contact with the Dela- ware State Police Officer, whose vehicle you may have noticed in an assigned parking spot, should an emergency develop. The Choir Loft is monitored by an Observer and is also protected with the lockdown of doors preventing easy access to the staircase. We have developed procedures for behind the scenes to protect your safety. You may notice several people (Observers) walking around prior to and after Mass to make sure the doors are secured and keeping watch. Our Observers will be wearing a Volunteer badge and can help with any unusual situation. And finally, we ask that backpacks/briefcases and any similar bags remain in your car. ! On behalf of Fr. Tom and the Safety Team, we’d like to welcome our guests and visitors here at St. Jude’s. These may appear to be extreme measures, but please keep in mind; all of this is done for your safety and security. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we find this necessary in today’s times. ! ! Mike Pfarr M Facilities Mgr. !

HEALTH MINISTRY UPDATE ! ! CDC Health hacks for school success ! ! To have a great school year, kids need to stay healthy. Healthy students are better learners. CDC has tips and resources for parents and schools to help children and teens get fit and stay healthy whether they’re just starting kindergarten or heading off to high school. ! ! “As a parent and grandparent, I know that back to school time is a busy time. Yet, I encourage parents and students to be mindful of some health essentials to add to your to do lists,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “Getting a flu shot this fall, frequent hand washing, and staying active all contribute to a healthier and more productive academic year.” ! ! Wash your hands !! ! Germs are everywhere. Touch a surface where germs are lurking, then touch your face, and you can get sick. ! It doesn’t have to be that way. !Handwashing !with soap and water is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and pre- vent the spread of colds, flu, and other diseases to others. ! ! Parents, teachers, and informed students can teach proper handwashing so people don’t pass germs or illnesses to others. At school, it’s important for students to wash their hands before eating; after using the toilet; and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing. Handwashing also helps keep students, their families, and school staff healthy so they don’t miss school or work. !
