The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time page 4 August 1, 2021 Dear St. Jude Parish, It is with gratitude that I wish to announce that, after seven years during which I have had the privilege to serve as Director of Liturgy & Music at St. Jude's, Fr. Mike has given me permission to take a year's leave of absence during which I will be singing as a bass lay clerk in the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. This will be a time of learning and professional development for me, as well as of rest and personal growth. My last Sunday here will be August 29th, and I look forward to returning in September of 2022. Fr. Mike and I are working together to ensure that the parish's tradition of beautiful music continues in my absence with the appointment of an interim director of music, and we anticipate the parish choir beginning rehearsals again this September under my interim successor.     Faith Fact Saints Simon and Jude Feast Day October 28 How do you feel when you are chosen to do something important? Honored, surprised, nervous? Some of the Apostles must have felt as you do. After spending much time in prayer, Jesus decided to choose 12 men, 12 rather unlikely candidates, who would be his Apostles and proclaim the Kingdom of God to all people. Simon the Zealot was one who was called. The Zealots were a Jewish group who believed that the promise of the Messiah meant a free and independent Jewish nation where they would never have to pay taxes to the Romans again. Some Zealots were also very concerned that the spiritual ideals of their religion be kept. But others in the group acted more like modern-day terrorists by raiding, killing, and inciting riots. Simon was known as “the zealot” to distinguish him from Simon Peter. At the same time, Jesus called Jude Thaddeus, brother of James, most likely a fisherman by trade. Along with 10 other men, these two followed Jesus, lived with him, fled when he underwent his Passion, and rejoiced when he rose from the dead. At Pentecost, they were filled with the Spirit and a burning desire to spread the Good News to all. Jude traveled to Mesopotamia to preach, and Simon went to Egypt. Eventually they both ended up in Persia, modern-day Iran. There they worked together evangelizing the people until they were both martyred. These two unlikely candidates for apostleship finally witnessed to the risen Lord with their lives.

    1 St Simon & St Jude 2012 Today, in the liturgical year, we celebrate two of the apostles, Simon the zealot and Jude, best known for being the patron saint of lost causes! It is a late tradition that puts these two apostles together as a missionary team, travelling to Persia and Macedonia, probably being martryd in Lebanon. Jude the apostle, also known as Judas, not Iscariot, in St John’s gospel, may be the same person as the apostle called Thaddeus, and may or may not be the same Jude who wrote the epistle of St Jude; and if all this seems a little vague, that is because whilst there are countless legends about St Simon and St Jude, including one that Simon the Zealot visited Glastonbury, in fact very little is really known about their lives or their deaths. Most of what purports to be true comes from the so called Golden Legend, a book of saints written in the 12th or 13th century. But isn’t it fascinating that there should be a patron saint of lost causes. Oh the lost causes with which I have been associated. Aged 13, I would sigh with unrequited love for my friend’s older brother. He, at 16, seemed the height of sophistication. He had been on a Top of the Pops show, he assured us that it was childish to like the Monkees, so pictures of them got torn down from the inside of my school desk and replaced with those who were less mainstream. He knew Long John Baldry, and when finally that singer got a hit song, I basked in reflected glory, even though I had never actually talked with him myself.

    Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. To do this the possibility of some fluctuation in the third part of the canon until the end of the first century AD for groups outside of the Pharisees is examined; then three steps are taken showing that: I. Jubilees and the Qumran literature used BW and considered it authoritative. The Damascus Document and the Genesis Apocryphon both alluded to BW. Qumran also used Jubilees which used BW. 2. The New Testament used BW in several places. The most obvious places are Jude 6, 14 and 2 Peter 2: 4. Jude in particular used a quotation formula which other New Testament passages used to introduce authoritative literature. 3.
