We welcome to our community Fr. Frank Uter, one of our retired priests, who is helping out for me while I am away. This past week, May 14, I celebrated my thirty -third anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. I was ordained on May 14, 1988 by the late Bishop Stanley Ott. During those years, I have served at St. Isidore Parish in Baker, St. Jude (the first time, as Fr. Mike’s associate), Most Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Baton Rouge (with Fr. Jerry Young, pastor), as pastor of St. Anne, Assumption, and St. Philomena Parishes (in Napoleonville, Plattenville, and Labadieville), and here at St. Jude again as pastor. It has been a beautiful journey. Thank you for your constant prayers and support throughout these years. In reflecting, I thought I might share with you a few personal perceptio ns of some of the blessings that we all experience as church and society, as well as some of the changes and challenges that hav e come our way. These are random thoughts, so please bear with me: COMMUNITY– there is still no substitute for coming together as a eucharistic community. You know that, for me, the table is a powerful symbol. This includes the table here in church and in our homes. Coming together in our brokenness and in gratitud e is a lifegiving experience for me and so many of you. Thank you for being part of our community, and thank you for being such a blessing along my journey and that of my family’s! CHANGES IN SOCIETY AND CHURCH– I’m not a negative person, but there are some things that, in my opinion, seem a bit different now. For example, it concerns me whenever I read national surveys revealing to us that a significant number of people in the U.S. say they have no need for organized religion. It also concerns me that, for most of us, not only have we become busi-er, but we have become too busy. Where’s the down-time? Or better yet, where’s the “sense of the sabbath” in our lives? Society has all but lost it. “Sabbath,” simply defined, means, “rest.” It’s the rhythm between work and rest that we are at risk of losing. And we wonder why our kids spend so much time on their phones or wherever? We wonder why so many adults do the same thing? When Deacon James referred to “F.O.M.O.” in his homily a few weeks ago, I think he really nailed it. Many people seem to have lost the art of resting. This includes: enough sleep, family time, prayer time, and so on. What so me may not realize, however, is that responding to their “F.O.M.O.” fears (fear of missing out), they’re really missing out on the most important thing of all: a healthier, holier, and, thus, happier life. If there is one thing that I ’ve learned in my years of priesthood it is this: nothing, NO—THING can take the place of down time with God and family. It’s a challenge to maintain it, but it’s well worth it. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, these are just a few random perceptions. I have others, but these are at the top of my list. More than anything, though, I am grateful beyond belief. I am thankful for my family, for my health, and for the privilege o f priesthood and serving here with you. You are always in my prayers! Have a great week! Sincerely, Fr. • Faith Fact Saints Simon and Jude Feast Day October 28
Faith Fact Saints Simon and Jude Feast Day October 28 How do you feel when you are chosen to do something important? Honored, surprised, nervous? Some of the Apostles must have felt as you do. After spending much time in prayer, Jesus decided to choose 12 men, 12 rather unlikely candidates, who would be his Apostles and proclaim the Kingdom of God to all people. Simon the Zealot was one who was called. The Zealots were a Jewish group who believed that the promise of the Messiah meant a free and independent Jewish nation where they would never have to pay taxes to the Romans again. Some Zealots were also very concerned that the spiritual ideals of their religion be kept. But others in the group acted more like modern-day terrorists by raiding, killing, and inciting riots. Simon was known as “the zealot” to distinguish him from Simon Peter. At the same time, Jesus called Jude Thaddeus, brother of James, most likely a fisherman by trade. Along with 10 other men, these two followed Jesus, lived with him, fled when he underwent his Passion, and rejoiced when he rose from the dead. At Pentecost, they were filled with the Spirit and a burning desire to spread the Good News to all. Jude traveled to Mesopotamia to preach, and Simon went to Egypt. Eventually they both ended up in Persia, modern-day Iran. There they worked together evangelizing the people until they were both martyred. These two unlikely candidates for apostleship finally witnessed to the risen Lord with their lives.

1 St Simon & St Jude 2012 Today, in the liturgical year, we celebrate two of the apostles, Simon the zealot and Jude, best known for being the patron saint of lost causes! It is a late tradition that puts these two apostles together as a missionary team, travelling to Persia and Macedonia, probably being martryd in Lebanon. Jude the apostle, also known as Judas, not Iscariot, in St John’s gospel, may be the same person as the apostle called Thaddeus, and may or may not be the same Jude who wrote the epistle of St Jude; and if all this seems a little vague, that is because whilst there are countless legends about St Simon and St Jude, including one that Simon the Zealot visited Glastonbury, in fact very little is really known about their lives or their deaths. Most of what purports to be true comes from the so called Golden Legend, a book of saints written in the 12th or 13th century. But isn’t it fascinating that there should be a patron saint of lost causes. Oh the lost causes with which I have been associated. Aged 13, I would sigh with unrequited love for my friend’s older brother. He, at 16, seemed the height of sophistication. He had been on a Top of the Pops show, he assured us that it was childish to like the Monkees, so pictures of them got torn down from the inside of my school desk and replaced with those who were less mainstream. He knew Long John Baldry, and when finally that singer got a hit song, I basked in reflected glory, even though I had never actually talked with him myself.

THE LETTER OF JUDE'S USE OF 1 ENOCH: THE BOOK OF THE WATCHERS AS SCRIPTURE by LAWRENCE HENRY VANBEEK submitted in accordance with the requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF THEOLOGY in the subject of NEW TESTAMENT at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA PROMOTER: Professor J. E. BOTHA November 1997 I declare that The Letter ofJude's Use Of I Enoch: The Book Of The Watchers is my own work and that all of the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated or acknowledged by means of complete references. /f/ri.ll~ Lawrence Henry VanBeek Preface This thesis attempts to show that I Enoch: The Book of the Watchers (BW) was authoritative and therefore canonical literature for both the audience of Jude and for its author. To do this the possibility of some fluctuation in the third part of the canon until the end of the first century AD for groups outside of the Pharisees is examined; then three steps are taken showing that: I. Jubilees and the Qumran literature used BW and considered it authoritative. The Damascus Document and the Genesis Apocryphon both alluded to BW. Qumran also used Jubilees which used BW. 2. The New Testament used BW in several places. The most obvious places are Jude 6, 14 and 2 Peter 2: 4. Jude in particular used a quotation formula which other New Testament passages used to introduce authoritative literature. 3. The Apostolic and Church Fathers recognized that Jude used BW authoritatively. The final chapter deals with the specific arguments of R.
