PRIESTLY ORDINATION: 33 YEARS LATER

Dear Friends: I am away this weekend for the wedding of a good friend. We welcome to our community Fr. Frank Uter, one of our retired priests, who is helping out for me while I am away. This past week, May 14, I celebrated my thirty -third anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. I was ordained on May 14, 1988 by the late Stanley Ott. During those years, I have served at St. Isidore Parish in Baker, St. Jude (the first time, as Fr. Mike’s associate), Most Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Baton Rouge (with Fr. Jerry Young, pastor), as pastor of St. Anne, Assumption, and St. Parishes (in Napoleonville, Plattenville, and Labadieville), and here at St. Jude again as pastor. It has been a beautiful journey. Thank you for your constant prayers and support throughout these years. In reflecting, I thought I might share with you a few personal perceptio ns of some of the blessings that we all experience as church and society, as well as some of the changes and challenges that hav e come our way. These are random thoughts, so please bear with me:

COMMUNITY– there is still no substitute for coming together as a eucharistic community. You know that, for me, the table is a powerful symbol. This includes the table here in church and in our homes. Coming together in our brokenness and in gratitud e is a lifegiving experience for me and so many of you. Thank you for being part of our community, and thank you for being such a blessing along my journey and that of my family’s!

CHANGES IN SOCIETY AND CHURCH– I’m not a negative person, but there are some things that, in my opinion, seem a bit different now. For example, it concerns me whenever I read national surveys revealing to us that a significant number of people in the U.S. say they have no need for organized religion. It also concerns me that, for most of us, not only have we become busi-er, but we have become too busy. Where’s the down-time? Or better yet, where’s the “sense of the sabbath” in our lives? Society has all but lost it. “Sabbath,” simply defined, means, “rest.” It’s the rhythm between work and rest that we are at risk of losing. And we wonder why our kids spend so much time on their phones or wherever? We wonder why so many adults do the same thing? When Deacon James referred to “F.O.M.O.” in his homily a few weeks ago, I think he really nailed it. Many people seem to have lost the art of resting. This includes: enough sleep, family time, prayer time, and so on. What so me may not realize, however, is that responding to their “F.O.M.O.” fears (fear of missing out), they’re really missing out on the most important thing of all: a healthier, holier, and, thus, happier life. If there is one thing that I ’ve learned in my years of priesthood it is this: nothing, NO—THING can take the place of down time with God and family. It’s a challenge to maintain it, but it’s well worth it.

So, as I mentioned at the beginning, these are just a few random perceptions. I have others, but these are at the top of my list. More than anything, though, I am grateful beyond belief. I am thankful for my family, for my health, and for the privilege o f priesthood and serving here with you. You are always in my prayers!

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Fr. Trey Nelson
