2016 LEADERSHIP VISIT | PRESENTED BY hursday, June 9, 2016 T CHARLESTON ELECTIVE SESSIONS Afternoon DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON CHALLENGE TOUR NOTES: Pick up your Challenge Packet on Thursday at the Commerce Lexington Info table outside the meeting room at Hibernian Hall. Charleston Challenge organizers are Renee Jackson Shepard and Kathryn Minton of Downtown Lexington Corporation. This activity is expected to take about 2 hours, although you can take as long as you like . Are you ready to hit the streets of Charleston to really learn what makes this city so special? This session will challenge participants to explore downtown Charleston and look for places or things that contribute to their thriving, vibrant down - town. Retail, art, history, downtown development, entertainment and functionality are all part of this session’s learning opportunity. Building on the opening day session, get an up-close look at how Charleston attracts 5 million visitors annually and keeps them coming back. Get ideas on how Lexington can capitalize on our rich history, vibrant nightlife and other assets. You’ll also be asked to identify comparable places or things in our own downtown Lexington. Participants will pick up their Charleston Challenge materials that includes instructions, a list of clues you’ll need to locate and photograph, and an answer sheet. We’ll collect your completed answer sheets on Thursday afternoon in the Mills House Lobby (Look for the Charleston Challenge Box). We’ll share your ideas and your pictures on social media and those participants with correct completed score sheets will be announced on Friday. PRIZES to be awarded. TOUR NOTES: Meet Sandy Canon in the hotel lobby at 1:30 p.m. First stop is the Local Works Charleston facility located in the heart of Charleston’s emerging “creative corridor.” This collaborative work space is operated by the non- profit organization Lowcountry Local First . The mission of Lowcountry Local First is to advocate for the benefits of a local living economy. With two key initiatives: Buy Local – an entrepreneurship and business development initiative designed to support local, independent retailers, manufacturers, and professional services providers and Eat Local - a sustainable agricultural initiative that includes a program designed to grow a new generation of aspiring farmers that includes a six month training program , access to the Dirt Works Incubator Farm and other workshops and resources.

From there, we’ll head to GrowFood Carolina , South Carolina’s first local food hub. Tour the warehouse with General Manager Sara Clow and learn how they’re working with farmers and wholesale customers to create a thriving local food system. Then, hear from Ashton Potter Wright of Bluegrass Farm to Table, Lily Brislen of the UK Food Connection and Sandy Noble Canon of Community Ventures to learn more about Lexington's dynamic local food economy and how you can help it grow.

There must be a reason, right? It can’t be by accident, can it? Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen will share the story that illustrates how the community had built relationships over the years that helped them come together to respond to the tragedy at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church one year ago.

Then, we’ll engage in a “Courageous Conversation.” We’ll learn more about how leader - ship, trust, forgiveness, and strong relationships shaped Charleston’s reaction and provided lessons for the world. And, looking inward at our own community, we’ll examine the strong connection between education, crime, and the economy. We’ll use all that we’ve learned during the visit and this session to explore ways to create sustainable change that affects all of us in a positive way.
