“Francisca” is based on Agustina Bessa Luis’ book, “Fanny Owen”, which in turn was inspired by a true story that ocurred in the 19th century. It plots the musings of its two main characters, José Augusto and Camilo Castelo Branco – on life, women, love, destiny, misfortune. As the dialogue between the two evolves in the course of the film, the characters are caught up in life, victims of their own beliefs. This DCP results from the 4K wet gate digitizations of the original 35mm camera negative conserved by Cinemateca. Digital grading (Cinemateca) and image restoration (IrmaLucia) were made using a distribution print as a reference. The sound comes from a sound positive struck by Cinemateca. Manoel de Oliveira The chance to make “Francisca” came up unexpectedly. I had prepared (and was ready to start) another film – a comedy – when a last minute disagreement with the author of the story made me back out. The chance to make “Francisca” (Fanny Owen) then ocurred because I was already interested in this true story (connected with my wife’s family): I had known the story for some time as people had talked to me a lot about it, and also I had read some of Fanny’s letters that my brother-in-law Abel still has. Camilo Castelo Branco, the famous novelista who later wrote the well known novel “Amor de Perdição”, was a friend of José Augusto and Fanny and with them a figure in this sad event which took place in 1850. With this title Camilo evokes the unhappy love affair of Fanny and José Augusto in his book “Bom Jesus do Monte”. To a certain extend, perhaps he did this in order to “clear himself” of cumplicity in the indecorous nature of this highly romantic love affair. Recently, the great writer Agustina Bessa Luís revived this story in her book “Fanny Owen”, basing herself on authentic facts and Camilo’s writings. It was this work of Agustina’s that spurred me to make “Francisca” and it was on her work that I built up my film. And so “Francisca” in effect transforms into a tetralogy of “frustrated love affairs” the series of three films I had made previously: “O Passado e o Presente”, “Benilde ou a Virgem Mãe” and “Amor de Perdição”. Pressures of pace and finance are mounting. So it is more important than ever to have strong public service media that provide quality journalism that goes out of its way to be a trusted guide, to bring people together and set a tone that enables dialogue. PRIX EUROPA is ALL about dialogue: Come together from all corners of the continent to exchange views, to see/listen for yourself together with the others, to talk and discuss, to meet and be constructive, rather than judgmental or clever. Grab the opportunity to get into conversation, to change perspective, to challenge your opinions and take away inspiration, a shared experience and new ideas. Cilla Benkö PRIX EUROPA President Director General Sveriges Radio – SR 3 Changing Europe – The Power of Dialogue Dear friends and colleagues, PRIX EUROPA is dedicated to the ideal of a united Europe, which commits itself to democratic, ethical and cultural values. This ideal is, however, in acute danger. We have to dread being abruptly pulled out of a dream that we have been living for over six decades. Of all countries, the Mother of all Democracies, the United Kingdom, is separating itself from our community. Over our Europe of togetherness, that so many people envy us for, the threat of disaster is looming.
