PAULO BRANCO He was born in Lisbon in 1950. He embarked in cinema in 1974, when he started working at the Olympic cinema, with Frédéric Mitterrand. Shortly thereafter, he became responsible for the management of the Parisian Action-République room. He became a film producer in 1979, working between Paris and Lisbon. Nowadays, he is one of the most internationally renowned personalities in the world of independent production, distribution, and exhibition. With a key role in auteur cinema, Paulo Branco is known for opening the door for innumerous promising directors who would go on to become established names. To date, he has produced more than three hundred films and worked with some of the most highly appraised directors in the world, such as David Cronenberg, Jerzy Skolimowski, Wim Wenders, Chantal Akerman, Alain Tanner, Werner Schroeter, André Téchiné, Andrzej Zulawski, Christophe Honoré, Olivier Assayas, Sharunas Bartas, Paul Auster, Philippe Garrel, Mathieu Amalric, Pedro Costa, João César Monteiro, João Botelho, and João Canijo or Teresa Villaverde. His career was marked by intense collaborations, over a 20 year period, with Raul Ruiz (LE TEMPS RETROUVÉ, THREE LIVES AND ONLY ONE DEATH, MYSTERIES OF LISBON…) e Manoel de Oliveira (FRANCISCA, VALE ABRAÃO, O SAPATO DE CETIM…). Since he started his activity as a producer, he has been a constant presence in the most important film festivals worldwide - such as Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Berlin, New York, Toronto, San Sebastián, Tokyo P A U L O B R A N C O 1 and São Paulo - being recognized as the independent producer who had the most films selected for the Cannes Film Festival. He presented 53 films at Cannes - 27 in the Official Selection - and took 48 films to the Venice Film Festival - “A Herdade” is the twentieth film he presents at the Competition, where he premiered 26 films by Portuguese directors. He was president of the Jury of the Official Selection in Competition at the Locarno Film Festival (2011), Lecce (2011), Lucca (2016) and at the Spirit of Fire festival, in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia (2018). In addition, he was a member of the judging panel of the Official Selection in Competition at the Rotterdam Festival (2006), Venice (2005) and Berlin (1999). Paulo Branco also received numerous awards and several honors during his career. The European Parliament in Strasbourg awarded him the title of "Best European Producer" in 1997. In 1998, the Republic of Chile awarded him the Order Gabriela Mistral, the highest distinction in the country. In 2002, the Locarno Festival awarded him, for the first time, the Raimondo Rezzonico Prize to a producer. He also received the Golden Horse award at the Taipei Film Festival. In 2004, Jacques Chirac recognized him as an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic. In 2014, Paulo Branco was awarded the CINEUROPA Award. The World Culture Council awarded him the Leonardo da Vinci World Arts Award 2019. In 2021, he was honored for the second time by the French Cinémathèque, which dedicated the tribute entitled “Bravo Branco” to him in 1922, and thus became the first independent producer to be honored twice by the prestigious cinémathèque. Since 2007, Paulo Branco has been Director of LEFFEST - Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival, a film festival that throughout its eleven editions has had the presence of the most varied personalities in the national and international artistic and cinematographic panorama, such as David Lynch, Pedro Almodóvar, Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg, Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, Nan Goldin, Juliette Binoche, Louis Garrel, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Monica Bellucci, Gerard Depardieu, Paul Auster, Don DeLillo, J.M.
