Where Stars are Born and Legends are Made™ The Apollo Theater Study Guide is published by the Education Program of the Apollo Theater in New York, NY | Volume 2, Issue 1, November 2010 If the Apollo Theater could talk, imagine the stories it could tell. It The has witnessed a lot of history, and seen a century’s worth of excitement. The theater itself has stood proudly on 125th Street since 1914, when it started life as a burlesque house for whites only, Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater. Dancers in skimpy costumes stripped down to flesh-colored leotards, and comics told bawdy jokes – that is, until then New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia made the decision to close down burlesque houses all over the city. When the doors of the burlesque theaters were padlocked, the building was sold. By S ul the time it reopened in 1934, a new name proclaimed itself from the marquee: the 125th Street Apollo Theatre. From the start, the Apollo was beloved by Harlemites, and immediately of became an integral part of Harlem life. When the Apollo first opened, Harlem boasted a lot of theaters and clubs. But many didn’t admit black audiences. Though the musicians who played in the clubs were black, the audiences were often white; the country still had a lot to American learn about integration. But the Apollo didn’t play primarily to whites. As soon as it opened its doors, black residents of Harlem streamed in themselves to enjoy the show. In the early years, the Apollo presented acts in a revue format, with a variety of acts on each bill. -

Abstract Informed by a critical multicultural framework, this research explores how youth raise awareness, critique inequitable structures, and engage in an array of social justice work. Two research major questions that guide this project are as follows: How do students create youth activist narratives using social justice experiences? What do students’ reflections about the narrative writing process reveal about why they engage in social justice work? In order to answer these questions, I used critical narrative inquiry as I entered a ninth-grade World Humanities classroom at Justice High School for a ten- month qualitative study. In the Humanities classroom, I focused on how students developed social justice projects on a variety of contemporary injustices (e.g., human sex trafficking, domestic violence, discrimination against LGBTQI youth, gentrification) and explored how youth came to understand, speak, and write about social inequities and injustices as well as how they position themselves as advocates, allies, and/or activists. Through thematic analysis of their Capstone Project, I analyzed how four girls used stories to engage in socially just activist practices. The narratives that emerged from this work can offer insight into how K-20 classrooms can foster partnerships that generate transformative, “activist” curricular engagements. -

Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. The publicity photographs are primarily of individ- ual performers, but a few shows are presented as well, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Annie, Barnum, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Cabaret, California Suite, Cats, A Christ- mas Carol, Dancin’, Evita, Gypsy, I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Peter Pan, Same Time Next Year, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Ziegfeld: A Night at the Follies. -

The Effectiveness of CEO Leadership Styles in the Technology Industry Sean Dougherty, Andrew Drake Advisors: Dr. Jonathan Scott and Professor Katherine Nelson Temple University Explanation of research The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of leadership style on financial success. A great deal of research has been done on the factors that affect the financial success of a company, but leadership is one factor that tends to be overlooked. That is due to the nature of leadership; like other aspects of human resources management such as company culture, leadership is not easily quantifiable. In order to study leadership’s effect on company success, we needed to make leadership less abstract and more concrete. We needed a means of distinguishing the way one person leads in comparison to another person, and the solution was presented to us upon reading Primal Leadership. Authors Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee make the detailed claim that the way a person leads can always be categorized into at least one of six distinct emotional leadership styles. We seek to build on the research of Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee by analyzing the effectiveness of each of these styles in terms of driving financial success. To measure financial success, we looked at the behavior of stock price in the time following an initial public offering. For our data set, we chose to study 60 companies in the technology industry that have gone public since the year 2000. With each company, we researched the CEO who led the company during the IPO and assigned him or her one to two leadership styles that he or she exhibits.
