I have learnt a lot around the difference between operations and governance. I have also facilitated groups for Rotary to organise their RYPEN programme which coordinated a Youth Leadership Camp. I was instrumental in contributing to the steering group that initiated the Leadership for Change degree which is the only degree of its type in New Zealand. Knowledge and experience of the outdoor sector I have worked in and around the outdoors for 24 years, with my first outdoor job at an outdoor centre when I was 16 working as a camp assistant. Since then I have worked for climbing gyms, be a climbing and tramping guide, worked on so many school camps I have lost count, so know how to link things to the curriculum. I have been a 4wd and quad bike tour guide and worked in outdoor retail. Then there is running my own outdoor company; working with polytechnics both as a contractor and a staff member. As the journey continued in the mix I have also written and reviewed outdoor standards. See my c.v for a full list of the breadth of my outdoor experiences, but as you can see with this abbreviation I have worked across the outdoor sector over these 24 years. Personal strengths and abilities / key skills Page 2 of 4 I am dedicated, committed and have the energy to contribute to NZOIA. Given my previous three year term on the board I now have an excellent overview of the strategies set out , and a clear vision for where NZOIA needs to head into the future. I have been working in the qualifications and standards portfolio and this experience will enable me to contribute to the next three years productively given the reform of the tertiary sector starting in 2020 and my understanding of this process. I am an excellent listener and have the ability to facilitate difficult groups and meetings when it is required. I am and always will be passionate about doing the best by NZOIA and its members in a collaborative way that works with other industry parties. Reasons for nomination Jo has had a lengthy and varied career in the outdoors which leaves her in a unique position of being able to understand the position of a small business owner, contractor, tertiary tutor, and qualification developer making her a valuable asset to NZOIA. Her depth of knowledge regarding the tertiary and industry training sector is of particular value during this changeable time.
