To Inspire. To Transform. To Serve. A Note From Father David
In this major preRelecon season, I believe that we must be prudent in what we say and in what context we do so. We have a right to express our viewpoints, but it is very easy to even unintenonally get others upset because what we say and how we say it. As a priest, I am very conscious of trying to avoid creang distracons to my call to proclaim the Gospel, and focus on people, no maer what their views or stands. I don’t want to add to the anxiety and division that we are all experiencing in one way or another. All of us are called to be faithful cizens in our society, bringing our Chrisan values to bear on everything that we say and do. We pray for the courage to prudently give witness to our beliefs, knowing that we cannot impose our beliefs on others. When you come to mass or church funcons, I would ask that we avoid wearing polical messages or symbols that could be distracng to our worship and Chrisan fellowship. If you see someone with a message or symbol that disturbs you, don’t focus on it, but think of the person who has the same basic hopes and desires for a peaceful, meaningful and happy life. I hope that Church can be a place where we can get a reprieve from our charged and volale culture so that we can be nurtured to be the family of God that we are. THANK YOU I want to express my gratude to our dedicated parishioners who give me to sanize the church a er masses. They are very generous to give extra me for the wellRbeing of our parish family and those who are with us. If you are willing to help, talk to one of them a er mass. More hands make lighter work. I am also thankful for our young people who are recording our livestreamed masses so that those who cannot be with us can sll connect with their parish. Thanks to Mr. Jeff Goda for training them and being a constant support for them. BLESSING OF PETS Next Saturday, close to the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we will offer the blessing of pets, weather perming. The blessing will be offered at St. Mary at 1:00 pm. Pets and their owners can gather in the area west of the Heritage Hall door. The blessing will also be offered at St. John the Bapst at 2:00 pm. Gather in the area near the entrance of the school. All are invited to join us for either blessing ceremony. As we bless our pets, we are also asking God to help us to be good stewards of the beauful world that God has given us, including the animals that offer us companionship and comfort. RESPECT LIFE Next Sunday is Respect Life Sunday. There will be a local life walk that day, beginning at the K of C Hall on Front Street at 12:00 noon. Deacon Zaid will be among the speakers. This walk is an opportunity to give public witness to our belief in the value and dignity of all human life, beginning with concepon in the womb. All are welcome.

Me T You know, God, I would forgive [insert name], but … God T But what? Me T Well, if only they would just … God T If what? The arch enemy of forgiveness is two lile words … but and if. Don’t let the shortness of these lile words fool you; they have the potenal to destroy even the best of relaonships. So what makes these lile conjuncons so powerful? They represent condions we place on others, and especially if we are in some sort of conflict. The person on whom we are imposing those lile conjuncons may have no clue what they are being served up. Worse yet, they o en don’t get a vote in the maer. Think about how many mes you and I have used those words. In fact, I would challenge you to count the number of mes you use them in the course of a day. I have, and I was unpleasantly surprised. Perhaps you can even think about a person who ‘sentenced’ your friendship, your love, your future together under certain condions … but, if. Someone shared with me recently that her dearest and most trusted friend has walked away from their longRandRtrusted friendship. They are on different sides of the upcoming elecon, and both had trenched themselves in, unwilling to consider each other’s viewpoints, or eventually, even to just listen. Though their friendship had survived many prior tragedies and chal- lenges in both of their families, it was unable to overcome this very personal gap. The weapon of condions was loaded and fired; you can connue to be my friend only if you agree with me. Sadly, a beauful friendship did not survive the wounds of this condion. Imagine if God were to place these sorts of condions on his love for you and me, especially when it comes to forgiveness. ‘I’ll forgive you, but … or … I’ll consider forgiving you only if …’. If you and I want to see what love without condions looks like, look no further than the cross of Jesus. Sure, it’s heavy; but maybe that’s why so many of us aren’t willing to pick it up and carry it. Praise God that his Son considered you and I worthy of his cross. Let’s pray about that. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16

The COVIDR19 pandemic has posed many challenges to the Archdiocese of Detroit and our parishes, including offertory funds lost due to the suspension of public liturgies. Parishes rely on the generosity of their members to cover expenses related to ministry, maintenance, staffing, community outreach programs and other pressing needs.
Regarding your offertory support….
During this time of disruption to our lives and the life of the parish, we continue to need the support of God’s people spiritually and financially. We are so grateful to all who throughout the pandemic crisis have been supporting the parish by mailing in or dropping off their contributions. Now that masses have resumed, the offertory has improved, but we still fall short of our needs to finish out this year’s budget. The parish has made adjustments to spending only on essentials. In addition, I am thankful to our parish staff who have been asked to make personal sacrifices in response to the decrease in parish income. We need them and their commitment to serve the Lord and God’s people. In our call to be good and generous stewards, we are invited to take an honest look at our changing personal and family situation and determine what our giving should be: equal sacrifice, not equal gifts. As we take small steps forward, we will continue to adjust the parish budget to meet the reality of our present resources. Please help us to continue to be the Catholic witness that God has made us to be since St. Mary was founded over 200 years ago. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. AMEN.

Dear Friends of MCES, It is amazing how quickly our summer went! It was a busy summer for MCES faculty and staff. Our teachers spent numerous days planning for a modified instruconal methodR providing socially distanced lessons and online learning. Our leadership worked diligently to determine the safest possible return to school, following all the guidelines and policies outlined in the State of Michigan Return to School Roadmap and the Archdiocese of Detroit Reopening Plans. All of this planning culminated in a great start to the school year. There was much uncertainty and hesitaon, but everyone rose to the challenge and worked together so we could reopen our campuses! I love seeing the true sense of teamwork at MCES. We face new challenges throughout the year. We have to be everRmindful of the threat of the COVIDR19 virus and work daily to prevent it. While keeping this safety topRofRmind, we also will carry onR providing our students a topRnotch, Catholic Educaon. We also carry on in our development. We are currently seeking a new Director of Early Childhood Educaon, as Mrs. Amanda Welton is moving on to a new posion. We wish her all the best in her future. We are planning new and unique fundraisers. We will also have our annual fall raffle and are exploring opons for events later in the year. We are grateful for your past support and hope you will connue to support us in the future. Now, more than ever, Catholic educaon is needed in the City of Monroe. We provide our students a place where their faith, relaonships and knowledge can flourish. We hope you will consider supporng MCES through the various fundraisers we offer, as well as through the giving form on the online giving center we will soon launch! My prayers are with you: that you may stay healthy through this pandemic. Please keep MCES in your prayers as we navigate this me of challenge and opportunity. Thank you for your prayers & support, Kyle Kubik MCES Execuve Principal MCES Teachers’ Annual Retreat Recap: We are Called MCES Teachers and Staff gathered for their start of year retreat on a Google Meet in mid August. The focus of this year's retreat was on the lyrics of the church song: "We are called”. Three videos framed each session. The first "We are called to be light for the kingdom," focused on change, which is very relevant in this uncertain me. Teachers were challenged to find their constantR the studentsR and help modify their pracce to help everyone grow despite the difficules. In session 2, the focus was on "We are called to act with jusce & to love tenderly." The focus of the talk was on the grace we need to give one anotherR fellow teachers, parents, students, and everyone we encounterR as this year is a new experience for every one of us and it will take me to grow. The final session: "We are called to serve one another," was all about servant leadership and inslling the importance of it in our students. MCES has a robust service program, however, that all needed to change with the onset of COVIDR19. The teachers and staff were challenged to find new ways to serve others in the safest manner possible. They are working on new service project ideas as we speak. Though this year is very different, our teachers entered it with an open mind and a willingness to answer their call. They are modifying their pracces every day to meet the needs of their students and the health & safety modificaon required.
