In this, his third novel, he creates a world and a tale based on the old adventure video games we all used to play (didn't we?) and brings them to life. The action, the puzzles, the characters and the settings all combine to create their own spell which will keep you from getting enough sleep for nights as you read, entranced by the world Below. Has good story and decent characters, but what I liked the most is finally being able to read a more gritty and down to earth dungeon crawl tale. Exploring dungeons is risky, tiresome and not for all , and the book doesnt fail to address this issue. Finally a more believable tale, even if by nature it fits the fantasy genre.Also, the expected tropes and cliches are "subtle", didnt find them exagerated at all, they fit the story nicely,adding flavor and lore, and not merely by pushing the story forward. Just the fact that magic is not used in a deus ex machina fashion and the fact that the protagonist is not given the mary sue treatment goes miles in my book in favor of this novel.Good work. Solid fantasy adventureBy Andy WhitfieldRead as a throwback novel to a time when every fantasy novel didn't have to be a six book series. If you're a roguelike player like I am, I think you'll get extra enjoyment out of it, but if you like a good sword and sorcery romp, I think you'll enjoy this.
