'Fanon': Genre Devices in Contemporary Fanfiction A CANON VS. ‘FANON’: GENRE DEVICES IN CONTEMPORARY FANFICTION A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English By Katharine E. McCain, B.A. Washington, DC March 18, 2015 Copyright 2015 by Katharine E. McCain All RiGhts Reserved ii CANON VS. ‘FANON’: GENRE DEVICES IN CONTEMPORARY FANFICTION Katharine E. McCain, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Caetlin Benson-Allott, PhD ABSTRACT Fanfiction is a Genre of literature that scholars can trace all the way back to ancient Greece and thus it has Garnered a multitude of definitions over the years. The purpose of this project is to move beyond the description of, “Stories based off of another author’s work” and to instead examine the ways in which contemporary fanfiction differs from other types of transformative texts, as well as to highlight how it has changed since its move into online archives. In this thesis I arGue that contemporary fanfiction is a highly communal Genre that uses other authors’ works as a starting point, but the stories fans then produce are unique in the narrative elements they emphasize, the lanGuaGe the stories are written in, and the mediums throuGh which the readers consume them. In order to demonstrate this, I examine numerous fics from four different fandoms in order to establish five characteristics of the genre: shared knowledge, lanGuaGe, medium, “bad” writinG, and the inclusion of critical analysis. I then end with a case study of Fifty Shades of Grey, using this work’s unique move from fic to mainstream novel in order to highlight how fic is its own style of writing, one seeped in both complexity and contradiction. iii This thesis is dedicated to my online friends: writers of fic, makers of vids, GIF creators, meta developers, the fan artists, the cosplayers, and all of the consumers who make the work worthwhile. I would like to thank my thesis committee: Professor Caetlin Benson-Allott and Professor Michael Macovski. Your advice, corrections, and overall support have been invaluable to this project. Finally, I would like to thank my friends and peers. Our discussions in the grad lounge proved nearly as informative as the research itself. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS An Ad For Fanfiction .............................................................................................................................. vii. Do not read while operating heavy machinery. Side effects for fanfiction include: difficulty distinguishing fanon from canon, spontaneous smushing of names, inability to read fluff in public without making goofy faces, death of feels, and it’s a gateway to further fannish involvement. Ask your doctor if you are already taking fanvids or meta. Not suitable for those prone to shipwars (Casey08, Kristine). vii A Brief, Personal Timeline 1990 Born; September 7th 1996-1998 Consumed a Great number of books, manGa, and anime. 1999 Discovered fanfiction for the first time on a desktop, Dell computer: Yu Yu Hakusho, Kuwabara/Yukina rom coms and H/C fics. Late in 1999 Discovered slash: Yu Yu Hakusho, a Hiei/Kurama PWP - “Seven Minutes in Heaven” by Mina Lightstar, art by Morgan D. Printed it, hid it in a puzzle box, showed it to my friends. We started composinG stories of our own soon after. 2000-2003 Consumed a Great number of books, manGa, anime, and fanfiction. 2005 Wrote “Confessions of a Sentimental GunslinGer” for a class assiGnment, a fifteen-stanza poem based off of Stephen KinG’s The Dark Tower series. Began to wonder if this was a type of fanfiction. 2010 Started seriously writinG fic, beGinninG with “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” an Original Series Star Trek Kirk/Spock pre-slash. It was about as well written as one would expect (which is to say, not well written at all). 2012 Published a poem, “I Walk a Path of Cyclicality” in Sherlock’s Home: The Empty House, makinG my first published piece (arguably) a work of fanfiction. Title: Just Go Find Yourself a Nice Alpha: Gender and Consent in Supernatural Fanfiction’s Alpha/Beta/Omega Universe. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Rebecca Olson Shows, books, and media are constantly negotiating power with their fans. Who decides what is canon? To whom does the story belong?? The answer has traditionally been in favor of producers. However, in the age of the internet, fans now hold considerably more power than they ever have before, and some shows, like the CW’s Supernatural, respond by participating in “fanservice.” Many fans of this show strongly support slash and incest pairings, and by allowing such interpretations to be acknowledged in the narrative Supernatural makes increasingly transgressive readings available to the audience. The trope known as “Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics” is extremely popular, borderline pornographic, and virtually eradicates women from the narrative—instead depicting a relationship between men that is highly heterosexual in dynamic. This trope deconstructs the gender binary by assigning gender roles based on behavior, rather than biology, and appeals to an animal code of ethics in order to indulge in problematic, sexist, and abusive sexual situations.

  • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

At the age of 6, when I was in the first grade, the grade where Americans generally learn to read, I absolutely hated it. My teacher, Mrs. Johnson, would call on students to stand up and read passages to the class. I would stare in awe as other kids would read their sentences flawlessly, even as butterflies rattled in my stomach, as I waited in dread for her to call on either myself or my twin sister.

  • Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media
Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media Source Introduction According to the Francesca Coppa, American scholar and co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works1, fan videos are “a form of grassroots filmmaking in which clips from television shows and movies are set to music.”2 Fan videos are commonly referred to as: fanvid, songvid, vid, AMV (for Anime Music Video); their process of creation is called vidding and their editors (fan)vidders. While the “media tradition” described above in Francesca Coppa‟s definition is a crucial part of the fan video production, many other fan videos are created for anime, especially Asian ones (AMV), for video games (some of them called Machinima), or even for other subjects, from band tributes to other types of remix. The vidding tradition – in its current “shape” – goes back to the era of the first VCR; but the very first fan videos may be traced back to the seventies in a slideshow format. When channel mixers and numerous machines available to a large group of consumers emerged, this fan activity easily became an expanding one amongst the fan communities, who were often interested in new technology, whatever era it is. Vidding has now become a digital process, thanks to the expansion of computer and related technical means, including at least semiprofessional editing software. It seems relevant to point out how rare it is that a vidder goes through editing training when they begin to create fan videos, or even become a professional editor later on. Of course, exceptions exist, but vidding generally remains a hobby.
