Neste estudo é descrito um novo registro da serpente pico-de-jaca, Lachesis muta, em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica no estado da Paraíba, Nordeste do Brasil. Essa espécie é considerada a maior das serpentes peçonhentas do Novo Mundo. O espécime foi encontrado durante a noite, cruzando um atalho estreito, próximo a um declive, a aproximadamente 20m de uma queda d’água. A ocorrência de L. muta nesse fragmento demonstra a importância da conservação dos fragmentos de Mata Atlântica para a preservação dessa espécie. Abstract: A comprehensive and up to date summary of the literature on the helminth parasites of lizards and amphisbaenians from South America is herein presented. One-hundred eighteen lizard species from twelve countries were reported in the literature harboring a total of 155 helminth species, being none acanthocephalans, 15 cestodes, 20 trematodes and 111 nematodes. Of these, one record was from Chile and French Guiana, three from Colombia, three from Uruguay, eight from Bolivia, nine from Surinam, 13 from Paraguay, 12 from Venezuela, 27 from Ecuador, 17 from Argentina, 39 from Peru and 103 from Brazil. The present list provides host, geographical distribution (with the respective biome, when possible), site of infection and references from the parasites. A systematic parasite-host list is also provided. Key words: Cestoda, Nematoda, Trematoda, Squamata, neotropical. Received 13 November, 2014; Accepted 16 February, 2015 Better characterization of individual snake venom toxins is useful for analyzing the association of their toxic domains and relevant antigenic epitopes. Here we analyzed the Bitis arietans hemorrhagic- inducing toxin present in a representative venom sample. Among the 1´ to 5´ protein peaks isolated using a Sephacryl S 100 HR chromatography column, hemorrhagic activity was expressed by all according to the following intensity, P´5 > P´3 > P´2 >, P´4. The proteins were recognized and measured with antibodies present in polyvalent horse F(ab)´2 anti-B. arietans, Bitis spp., Lachesis muta, B. atrox, Bothrops spp., Crotalus spp., and Naja spp. or in IgY anti-B. arietans and anti-Bitis spp. using enzyme- linked immunosorbent assays and western blotting. In addition, in an in vitro-in vivo assay these anti- venoms were able to block hemorrhagic-inducing activity. The evident cross-reactivity expressed by different specific anti-venoms indicates that metalloproteinases induce an immunological signature indicating the presence of similar antigenic epitopes for several snake venoms. -

Multi-National Conservation of Alligator Lizards
MULTI-NATIONAL CONSERVATION OF ALLIGATOR LIZARDS: APPLIED SOCIOECOLOGICAL LESSONS FROM A FLAGSHIP GROUP by ADAM G. CLAUSE (Under the Direction of John Maerz) ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is defined by unprecedented human influence on the biosphere. Integrative conservation recognizes this inextricable coupling of human and natural systems, and mobilizes multiple epistemologies to seek equitable, enduring solutions to complex socioecological issues. Although a central motivation of global conservation practice is to protect at-risk species, such organisms may be the subject of competing social perspectives that can impede robust interventions. Furthermore, imperiled species are often chronically understudied, which prevents the immediate application of data-driven quantitative modeling approaches in conservation decision making. Instead, real-world management goals are regularly prioritized on the basis of expert opinion. Here, I explore how an organismal natural history perspective, when grounded in a critique of established human judgements, can help resolve socioecological conflicts and contextualize perceived threats related to threatened species conservation and policy development. To achieve this, I leverage a multi-national system anchored by a diverse, enigmatic, and often endangered New World clade: alligator lizards. Using a threat analysis and status assessment, I show that one recent petition to list a California alligator lizard, Elgaria panamintina, under the US Endangered Species Act often contradicts the best available science. -

We studied the ecology of a K. calcarata population in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in Brazil and evaluated lizards’ body temperatures, stomach content, activity time, body measurements, and reproduction stage. We tested whether: 1) body temperature was influenced by substrate or air temperatures, 2) diet composition varied according to age and sex, and 3) there was sexual dimorphism in body size and bauplan (morphology). Lizards were more active during the hottest hours of the day, commonly in the litter or fallen logs. Body temperatures were influenced more by substrate temperatures than by air temperatures. Diet was composed mainly of arthropods, with Orthoptera and Araneae as the most important categories (numerically and volumetrically). Diet composition was similar between sexes, but varied ontogenetically as an effect of body size, with juveniles eating smaller prey than adults. -

Hammer (editor) Biosphere Expeditions £10 / €15 where sold Abstract In 2003 Biosphere Expeditions completed a second successful year of biodiversity investigations at the Piedras Biodiversity Station along the River Las Piedras in the Per Amazon. This year the expedition ran between 15 June and 25 July 2003 and concentrated on four projects. The herpetology project was the first of its kind for the Piedras river system and in just four weeks the expedition collected and identified 71 species of frog, toad and reptile, a considerable number for such a short period of time. Data collection continued on the mammal transects and at the macaw colpa. The mammal transect investigations collected data on animal populations and compared populations in a hunted versus a non-hunted area. At the macaw colpa the team continued to investigate the impacts of boat traffic on parrot feeding behaviour and looked at species composition and numbers. A further study was carried out at a mammal colpa. Using combined print traps and a remote sensor video camera 14 species of bird and animal were recorded feeding at the colpa. Copeoglossum aurae is a newly discovered skink in Trinidad and Tobago (Hedges and Conn, 2012). It has a dark lateral solid stripe that extends from under its oval shaped ear past its hind legs onto the tail (Fig. 1). C. aurae male and female specimens can reach a maximum of 98.5mm and 109mm snout-vent length, respectively, and tails can reach up to 65mm. They are heavily scaled lizards with scales being smaller on the limbs in comparison to other body parts. Their tails, like some other reptiles, can be broken off and regenerated. The dorsal colour of most specimens are greyish-green with small to medium deep brown spots evenly spread on the body, limbs and tail. The dorsal colours are different shades of brown, grey and green, and green-white lateral stripes are found from the ear to the hind limbs (Hedges and Conn, 2012). DISTRIBUTION. Copeoglossum aurae species is distributed in some islands of the Caribbean including southern Windward Islands like St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and it was postulated that some may have migrated to parts of South America (Venezuela) (Murphy et al., 2013). HABITAT AND ECOLOGY. C. aurae exhibit both arboreal and non-arboreal characteristics, since they are found either on trees or on the ground (Murphy et al., 2013). -
