Schuh 12th UIC-Sustainability Conference Venice - 26-10-2012 8 19.10.2012 Problem of Railway Crossings (RCs) Status: Oct. 2012 • 3.972 ÖBB RCs in Austria in total • ~42% with safety bars and light-signals • ~56% without safety bars (i.e. safety through traffic signs – St. Andrew`s cross, acoustic signals, speed limits) • ~2% safeguarded by personnel • Main lines – 1RC/every ~1900m • Branch lines – 1RC/every ~730m ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/GBL ISM NH-Koord (Öffentlich) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/Th. Schuh 12th UIC-Sustainability Conference Venice - 26-10-2012 Problem of RCs without safety bars Overall goal of the ÖBB is to remove railway crossings! 80 -100 RCs are removed every year Bridges Underbridges ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/GBL ISM NH-Koord (Öffentlich) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/Th. Schuh 12th UIC-Sustainability Conference Venice - 26-10-2012 9 19.10.2012 Challenge in Windschnurn – electrical railway control center (ERCC) Spittal-Mill. Project: upgrade of the southern part of the Tauern railway – double-track extension • Construction of a ERCC in the station of Spittal-Millstättersee Total investment ~ € 20.- Mio. • Renewal of two railway-crossings (RC)?? • usually two options 1. Reconstruction of the RCs with new technical equipment 2. Discontinuation of the RCs through compensating measures (fly-over, underbridge) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/GBL ISM NH-Koord (Öffentlich) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/Th. Schuh 12th UIC-Sustainability Conference Venice - 26-10-2012 10 19.10.2012 Solution in Windschnurn New approach! Complete abandonment of RCs (without any compensation measures) Therefore the farmland which had fomerly been accessible via the RCs had to be taken out of use A total area of ~16 ha had to be acquired ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/GBL ISM NH-Koord (Öffentlich) ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/Th. Schuh 12th UIC-Sustainability Conference Venice - 26-10-2012 Solution in Windschnurn A win-win-win solution could be found! ÖBB and the province of Carinthia acquired the farmland from the owners and shared the costs of € 940.000.- 1. ÖBB was able to abandon the RCs completely and saved € 430.000.- (compared to technical upgrade with safety-bars) 2. Carinthia found a compensation area for the B 100 road enlargement 3. An area of 16 ha could be added to the Natura 2000 site – Upper Drava ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG/GBL ISM NH-Koord
