The essays published here reflect both the breadth of the genre and the diversity of those who re- search and write about it. The reference to Homer’s Odyssey in the title of this volume is intended to evoke both the ancient origins of the genre, anchored, so to speak, in the Greek epic by that name, and to allude to the idea of mobility, adventure, wonder,

VII/1 2016: 112811 ANDRZEJ SZMYT University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn RUSSIAS EDUCATIONAL POLICY AIMED AT THE POLES AND THE POLISH TERRITORIES ANNEXED DURING THE REIGN OF TSAR ALEXANDER I 1 KEYWORDS: Russia, tsar Alexander I, the Russian partition of Poland, the history of education, the Vilnius Scientific District, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski ABSTRACT: The beginning of the 19th century in Russia marks the establishment of the modern system of education, to much extent based on the standards set by the National Commission of Education. Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski , then a close associate of Alexander I, used the young tsars enthusiasm for reforming the country, including the educational system. The already implemented reforms encompassed also the territories of the Russian partition. The unique feature of the Vilnius Scientific District created at that time was the possibility of teaching in the Polish language in all types of schools. It was the school superintendent Prince A. J. Czartoryski who deserved credit for that due to his considerable influence upon the tsars policy towards the Poles. After the change in the position of the superintendent (1824) and the death of Alexander I (1825), the authorities policy on the Polish educational system became stricter, and after the fall of the November Uprising Polish educational institutions practically disappeared. The source base of the text is constituted by the archival materials stored in the State Historical Archives in Kiev and Vilnius as well as in the Library of The Vilnius University.

HISTORY EDUCATION REFORM IN POST-COMMUNIST POLAND, 1989-1999: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY EFFECTS ON EDUCATIONAL TRANSITION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Christine S. Parker, M.A. ******* The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Antoinette Errante, Adviser Robert Lawson Adviser College of Education Steven Miller Department of Educational Policy & Leadership Copyright by Christine S. Parker 2003 ABSTRACT This dissertation will describe and analyze how state officials, educators, publishers, and historians in Poland have addressed the task of reforming its national curriculum standards and supporting textbooks in the period of transition from the end of Communist rule in 1989 to the introduction of a new system of education in 1999. The goals of this study are to determine (1) the sources of transitional curriculum policies in history education and the role of reform actors in Poland since 1989; (2) why the history education curriculum reforms changed as they did between the creation of proposals and the eventual codification of the reform into law; (3) the influences on the reform of history textbooks during the transitional period; (4) the differences between anticipated goals and actual outcomes of the curricular and textbook reforms, and (5) how to account for those changes in light of the greater scope of the historical development of democratic education in Poland. This grounded study is based on multiple data sources, including documentary evidence, professional journals, and personal interviews with individuals participating in the reform of the history curriculum.

Adolf Juzwenko Ossolineum. 200 years with the people in search of their way to independence In the 1790s, count Józef Maksymilian Ossoli ński was in Vienna, seeking support for patriotic initiatives intended at preventing the collapse of the Polish state. Because it turned out to be impossible to prevent, Ossoli ński decided he should engage himself in the protection of national identity, historical memory and the will of the people to remain themselves. The family establishment of the Ossolineum Library, presented by the count to the emperor of Austria on 18 October 1816, was approved on 4 June 1817. It was indeed a success – after nearly twenty years of attempts, taken during various conflicts tearing Europe, Ossoli ński managed to give his compatriots an institution which proved to be increasingly successful in supporting Polish resistance against forced Russification and Germanisation. At the turn of the 20 th century, the arrangement of political powers in Europe had changed radically. When the Institute celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 1917, Europe had been at war for three years. The conflict continued between powers divided into two camps – Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. On the Eastern front, Germany and Austria-Hungary struggled against Russia, on the Western one – France and Great Britain fought against Germany. All parties were exhausted by the conflict, the armies – demoralised by Bolshevik propaganda. Eventually, United States' involvement determined the fate of the war. The chances for deep political changes in Europe grew. Nations of Europe, previously deprived of sovereignty, had begun to reach for independence. When the war ended, on 11 November 1918, Poles had begun to build their own state.

Zbiory króla Stanisława Augusta jako podstawa zbiorów Gimnazjum Wołyńskiego Katarzyna Buczek e-mail: [email protected] University of Warsaw. Poland Abstract: The library and the cabinet collections of King of Poland Stanisław August Poniatowski reflect the trends of the Enlightement as well as the monarch’s interests. Their acquisition by one of the most important Polish schools, the Volhynian Gymnasium in Kremenets, saved them from dismemberment and gave rise to school collections. The acquisition was possible owing to history (the Partition of Poland, and the emergence of the Vilna Educational District) and a unique man – Tadeusz Czacki. The collections at the Volhynian Gymnasium in Kremenets was open to the public on a daily basis. In this way, the Polish King’s Stanisław August wish to have the collection available for masses came true, after his death regrettably. School collections were very valuable. Having originated from the royal collection of the last Polish King, they became a reminiscence of the national potential of a country that disappeared from the map of Europe in 1795. This article is a part of a future book and an attempt of documenting the transition of respective collections from the royal residence in Warsaw to Kremenets.

ABSTRACT Tradition and Transition: Mendel Lefin of Satandw and the Beginnings of the Jewish Enlightenment in Eastern Europe, 1749-1826 Nancy Beth Sinkoff This dissertation reexamines the beginnings of the Jewish Enlighten ment (Haskalah) in Eastern Europe in the late eighteenth and early nine teenth centuries by focusing on its preeminent figure, Mendel Lefin of Satandw (1749-1826). Unlike the standard historiography on the Jewish Enlightenment, which stressed the influence of external factors upon the emergence of Haskalah and emphasized the rupture in traditional Jewish society created by the maskilim, this dissertation underscores the internal causes for Lefin's turn to the Haskalah and its moderation. Lefin defined the Haskalah in opposition to what he believed was a radicalizing trend among his Berlin peers and to Hasidism, the mystical movement which emerged and flourished in eighteenth-century Podolia and Volhynia.

Religious and Sacred Poetry: An International Quarterly of Religion, Culture and Education No. 1 (1) January-February-March 2013 pages 79 - 90 CLARINDA E. CALMA (Cracow, Poland) e-mail: cecalma[at]gmail.com Edmund Campion’s Rationes Decem: A Survey of Campion’s Books in Polish Libraries On May 6 th 1816, Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski signed the deed of most spectacular purchases of the time. For the handsome amount of 12,000 red Polish zlotys to be paid in cash, the equivalent sum of 50,000,000 zlotys today, Czartoryski had finally closed the negotiations for the sale of Tadeusz Czacki’s Poryck collection. Many had vied for this collection and in fact it would take Czacki’s widow, Barbara Czacka five years to decide on its sale. It was a reluctant decision she had to make, eventually moved to do so “for the good and welfare of her chil- dren and in order to pay for incurred debts” 1. The collection was indeed impressive. It included 35,000 volumes of cimelia, incunabulae, old prints and about 1500 manuscripts some of which formerly belonged to the last elected Polish king, Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Tadeusz Czacki (1765-1813), a statesman and educational reformer was likewise an avid bibliophile and amassed this collection for about twenty years. 2 He was the founder of numerous schools in Krzemieniec and had trans- formed the areas of Podoła and Wołyn. into important centres of culture and learning. He likewise founded two educational foundations, which were to gather the scattered collections of the Jesuit libraries in Vilnius and Russia.
