Hydrants will be systematically opened to clean out water mains that provide water to your home or business. Please visit us at www.FirstDistrictWater.org for exact days and times. This year the District will utilize UniDirectional Flushing on Silvermine Avenue to more effectively and efficiently clean the largest pipes. This will be done the first week of May and may cause more widespread discoloration than normal flushing. To minimize the impact on customers the UniDirectional flushing will be done late at night. We urge customers to follow the procedures listed at the end of this notice during that week. This activity will cause some temporary discoloration of water in the vicinity of hydrants being flushed. This discoloration is caused by the disturbance of naturally occurring minerals (iron and manganese) that have settled in the water mains. The water does not pose a health risk. However, to prepare for discoloration, we advise customers to store tap water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking until the water clears up. Customers should also check the condition of the water prior to washing clothes or dishes. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Should you have any questions, please call our office at 203-847-7387 Ext. 7261. Sincerely, Commissioners of the First District Water Department .
