New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College prepare servants to walk with Christ, proclaim His truth, and fulfll His mission.

Course Description Students will learn continuing keyboard skills designed to prepare them for keyboard proficiency. The successful completion of this course fulfills the requirements for the piano proficiency exam.

Student Outcomes At the conclusion of the semester, the student will demonstrate: 1. Basic skills in reading and playing for the piano, 2. Readiness for continuance in other music courses that require keyboard proficiency, 3. Proficiency in playing scales, cadences, harmonization, score reading, hymns, basic piano performance literature, playing from a lead sheet, and basic accompanying.

Course Texts This course has no required text. All material will be given in class.

Course Requirements and Grading: Scales and Cadences 20% Melody Harmonization 20% Score Reading 20% Hymns 10% Performance Literature 10% Lead Sheet 10% 10%

This course has a PASS/FAIL grading system using a rubric that will be given in class. Description of Required Skills 1. Scales and Cadences Play the following scales hands together, correctly fingered, ascending and descending 2 octaves: -Major (C, G, D, A, E, F, B, Gb, Db, Bb, Eb, Ab) -Harmonic minor (C, G, D, A, E, F, B, ) -Play cadences (I-IV-I-V7-I) after each scale.

2. Melody Harmonization Play provided with right hand, adding appropriate chords (I, IV, or V7) with left hand. -Keys: C, G, F, D, A, Bb, Eb, Ab

3. Score Reading (appropriate ) Play any combination of selected voice parts (SA, AT, TB, ST, SB, AB) for each of three provided choral pieces. -Play higher voice with right hand, lower voice with left hand. -Tenor must be played one octave lower than written.

4. Hymns (appropriate singing tempo) Play eight different hymns, exactly as written, one in each of the following keys: -C, G, F, D, A, Bb, Eb, Ab

5. Literature (appropriate performance tempo) Perform from memory a classical literature piece, one page minimum in length.

6. Lead Sheet Reading (appropriate singing tempo) Play two following provided lead sheets.

7. Accompanying (appropriate performance tempo) Accompany a vocal, choral or instrumental performer by playing an actual written accompaniment exactly as written. Hymnals, lead sheets, or improvisatory methods may not be used.

8. Passing off skills: For each skill, the student will receive a grade based on… a. Steady/Appropriate Tempo b. accuracy c. Note accuracy

The student may choose to pass off skills at any point during the semester. Otherwise, all skills will be passed off at the final exam date.

Proficiency on all skills must be shown by this day. Dec. 2 – PIANO JURIES (all five skills, if not passed off earlier) NOTE: Class will not meet this day because of juries. Students may attend Tuesday’s class or make an appointment with the professor.

ADDITIONAL COURSE INFORMATION 1. Attendance Policy: Leavell College follows the attendance policy as stated in the Leavell College catalog. Since class meets only once per week, absences should be kept to a minimum.

2. Policy for Late Submissions: All late submissions will incur a penalty of one letter grade per day. Assignments submitted over a week late will not be accepted.

3. Plagiarism Policy: A high standard of personal integrity is expected of all Leavell College students. Copying another person’s work, submitting downloaded material without proper references, submitting material without properly citing the source, submitting the same material for credit in more than one course, and committing other such forms of dishonesty are strictly forbidden. Although anything cited in three sources is considered public domain, we require that all sources be cited. Any infraction may result in failing the assignment and the course. Any infraction will be reported to the Dean of Leavell College for further action.

4. Classroom and Online Decorum: Each student is expected to demonstrate appropriate Christian behavior. The student is expected to interact with other students in a fashion that will promote learning and respect for the opinions of the others in the course. A spirit of Christian charity is expected at all times. Electronic devices should be used only for classroom purposes as indicated by the professor. Phones are to be out of sight and on mute or vibrate during class unless intructed otherwise.

5. Special Needs: If you need accommodations for a disability, please set up a meeting with the professor for consideration of any modifications you may need.

6. Emergency Plan: In the event the NOBTS schedule is impacted due to a natural event, go to the seminary’s website for pertinent information. Class will continue as scheduled through the Blackboard site. Please note announcements and assignments on the course’s Blackboard site.

9. COVID-19: During the COVID-19 pandemic Leavell College is abiding by all New Orleans governmental guidelines and CDC safety guidelines. Students are expected to abide by such policies while on campus.
