Dhruva the Ancient Indian Pole Star: Fixity, Rotation and Movement
Indian Journal of History of Science, 46.1 (2011) 23-39 DHRUVA THE ANCIENT INDIAN POLE STAR: FIXITY, ROTATION AND MOVEMENT R N IYENGAR* (Received 1 February 2010; revised 24 January 2011) Ancient historical layers of Hindu astronomy are explored in this paper with the help of the Purân.as and the Vedic texts. It is found that Dhruva as described in the Brahmân.d.a and the Vis.n.u purân.a was a star located at the tail of a celestial animal figure known as the Úiúumâra or the Dolphin. This constellation, which can be easily recognized as the modern Draco, is described vividly and accurately in the ancient texts. The body parts of the animal figure are made of fourteen stars, the last four of which including Dhruva on the tail are said to never set. The Taittirîya Âran.yaka text of the Kr.s.n.a-yajurveda school which is more ancient than the above Purân.as describes this constellation by the same name and lists fourteen stars the last among them being named Abhaya, equated with Dhruva, at the tail end of the figure. The accented Vedic text Ekâgni-kân.d.a of the same school recommends observation of Dhruva the fixed Pole Star during marriages. The above Vedic texts are more ancient than the Gr.hya-sûtra literature which was the basis for indologists to deny the existence of a fixed North Star during the Vedic period. However the various Purân.ic and Vedic textual evidence studied here for the first time, leads to the conclusion that in India for the Yajurvedic people Thuban (α-Draconis) was Dhruva the Pole Star c 2800 BC. -

The Prophets utterances (Part 2) Khratu (Skt: Kratu) (Human rational thinking) [My preamble in ‘The Prophet’s utterances’ Part (1) I had discussed both the closeness as well as some noteworthy differences in the usage of the word ‘səraōša’ (uttered by Zarathushtra) with the word ‘śrōša’, used by the composers of the early part of the Ŗg Vēdā and later Sanskrit texts. Here, I present another Gāthic word ‘Khratu’ and its parallel ‘Kratu’ in the Ŗg Vēdā. The purpose of this rather time-consuming undertaking, apart from pointing towards the closeness of the Vēdic Āryānic and the Gāthic Āiryānic peoples, is to provide a ready reference to researchers of this interesting subject matter]. Pronunciation symbols Again, I have adopted the following transcription (after Kanga 6. & Taraporewala 9) as permitted by my software, while avoiding the encoding of the ITRANS convention hoping to make the reading for non- academic purposes generally easier: - a as in fun; ā as in far; ã (nasal sound ãn) as in ‘āvãn’; ə as in fed, ē as in fade; i as in fill; ī as in feel; o as in for; ō as in fore; u as in full; ū as in fool. The nasal sounds are ãn as in āvãn; ən as in the French ‘trés biən’, ĩn as in Ahĩnsā (also pronounced ‘ĩm’ as in Sanskrit Ahĩmsā and as also in Avestan and Gathic languages) and ũn as in Humayũn. The pronunciation of some consonants (as permitted by my software) are ‘ś’ for ‘sh’, ‘š’ for ‘ss’, ‘ŗ’ for ‘ri’, ñ for ‘ni’, ‘ž’ for ‘zh’. -

But BRAHMANDA, VISHNU & OTHER PURANAS describe Dhruva as a visible star at the end of a constellation with 14 stars known as Shishumara that is an animal figure like Gharial/Porpoise/Whale The commentator on V.P. states that this Shishumara is as per the Vedas. 6 Oil Mill Model 7 The movement of sun and other celestial bodies is explained as induced from Dhruva, who resides at the tail of the Śiśumāra. -

It is divided into three parts: Hymns to the Mystic Fire: The entire contents of a book of this name that was published by Sri Aurobindo in 1946, consisting of selected hymns to Agni with a Fore- word and extracts from the essay “The Doctrine of the Mystics”. Other Hymns to Agni: Translations of hymns to Agni that Sri Aurobindo did not include in the edition of Hymns to the Mystic Fire published during his lifetime. An appendix to this part contains his complete transla- tions of the first hymn of the Rig Veda, showing how his approach to translating the Veda changed over the years. Commentaries and Annotated Translations: Pieces from Sri Aurobindo’s manuscripts in which he commented on hymns to Agni or provided annotated translations of them. Some translations of hymns addressed to Agni are included in The Secret of the Veda, volume 15 of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SRI AUROBINDO. That volume consists of all Sri Aurobindo’s essays on and translations of Vedic hymns that appeared first in the monthly review Arya between 1914 and 1920. His writings on the Veda that do not deal primarily with Agni and that were not published in the Arya are collected in Vedic and Philological Studies, volume 14 of THE COMPLETE WORKS. -

The Difference between Lord Vishnu & Lord Krishna & There is so many interpolations of our Holy Shastras from the west especially about this topic that now we feel obliged to comment about it and right the wrongs that has truly marred our understanding between Lord Vishnu and Shree Krishna... Now I really don't want to go into too much detail of the universal creation as this can really confuse many and is rather lengthy as well so I will try to keep it as simple and as easy to understand as possible. So lets venture further into this article and find out really who is the origin of everything. After the information given below we will have a diagram of what we are trying to convey in this article. That should help :) Many assume that Lord Vishnu is the source of all other incarnations of Godhead. Yes, this is true, but not in the case of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is actually the source of Lord Vishnu. When Lord Krishna descends into this world, (once in a day of Lord Brahma which is 4.32 billion earth years, we just missed Lord Krsna by a mere 5000 years which in Vedic time-lines is just the proverbial second), He appears as Himself and not as an expansion of Lord Vishnu. To verify this, lets present the following details. For the maintenance of the universe, Lord Krishna descends in the form of Lord Vishnu, who is His personal plenary expansion (meaning "Full; entire; complete; absolute" expansion) and the director of the mode of goodness. -

Most words from languages other than English (primarily San- skrit), and some English words used in special senses in the Record of Yoga, are included. Transliteration. Words in italics are Sanskrit unless otherwise indi- cated. Sanskrit words are spelled according to the standard interna- tional system of transliteration. This has been adopted because the same Sanskrit word is often spelled in more than one way in the text. The spellings that occur in the text, if they differ from the transliter- ation (ignoring any diacritical marks over and under the letters), are mentioned in parentheses. The sounds represented by c, r.,ands´ or s. in the standard transliteration are commonly represented by “ch”, “ri”, and “sh” in the anglicised spellings normally used in the Record of Yoga. Order.
