  • H3.3 Macaronesian Inland Cliff
European Red List of Habitats - Screes Habitat Group H3.3 Macaronesian inland cliff Summary The perennial vegetation of crevices and ledges of cliff faces in Macaronesia away from coastal salt-spray is of very diverse character - some, for example, dominated by succulents, others rich in ferns and bryophytes characteristic of shaded situations - and it includes several hundreds of taxa endemic to the archipelagoes. The main threats are mountaineering and rock climbing, outdoor sports and leisure activities, and construction of infrastructures such as roads and motorways. Synthesis There is no evidence of significant past reductions, either in the last 50 years or historically, and also future prospects are good, as no serious threats are envisaged, besides touristic/leisure activities and putative faulty environmental impact assessments that may overlook this habitat as valuable. Reduction in quantity, reduction in quality and criteria of geographic distribution yield the Least Concern (LC) category. In spite of the LC category, conservation policy and management should restrict to the maximum any threat to or reduction of the habitat, as it has a very high conservation value, because of high endemism of species and communities with many local and regional variaties. Overall Category & Criteria EU 28 EU 28+ Red List Category Red List Criteria Red List Category Red List Criteria Least Concern - Least Concern - Sub-habitat types that may require further examination Four general subtypes can be distinguished based on species composition and different ecological conditions. However, at present, no data are available to carry out an individual assessment of each of them. In the future, if detailed plot sampling has been carried out, such an evaluation may be possible.

E-mail [email protected] Received: 3 November 2011 Returned for revision: 9 December 2011 Accepted: 1 March 2012 Published electronically: 25 April 2012 † Background and aims Tribe Orchideae (Orchidaceae: Orchidoideae) comprises around 62 mostly terrestrial genera, which are well represented in the Northern Temperate Zone and less frequently in tropical areas of both the Old and New Worlds. Phylogenetic relationships within this tribe have been studied previously using only nuclear ribosomal DNA (nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, nrITS). However, different parts of the phylogenetic tree in these analyses were weakly supported, and integrating information from different plant genomes is clearly necessary in orchids, where reticulate evolution events are putatively common. The aims of this study were to: (1) obtain a well-supported and dated phylogenetic hypothesis for tribe Orchideae, (ii) assess appropriateness of recent nomenclatural changes in this tribe in the last decade, (3) detect possible examples of reticulate evolution and (4) analyse in a temporal context evolutionary trends for subtribe Orchidinae with special emphasis on pollination systems.

  • Interspecific Hybridization Between Durum Wheat and Aegilops Umbellulata (Zhuk.)
713 Bulgarian Journal of Agricultural Science, 18 (No 5) 2012, 713-721 Agricultural Academy INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION BETWEEN DURUM WHEAT AND AEGILOPS UMBELLULATA (ZHUK.) B. HADZHIIVANOVA, V. BOZHANOVA and D. DECHEV Field Crops Institute, BG - 6200 Chirpan, Bulgaria Abstract HADZHIIVANOVA, B., V. BOZHANOVA and D. DECHEV, 2012. Interspecific hybridization between durum wheat and Aegilops umbellulata (Zhuk.). Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 18: 713-721 The possibility for obtaining of interspecific hybrids between three durum wheat genotypes (Triticum durum, 2n = 4x = 28, AABB genomes) and one accession of Aegilops umbellulata (2n = 2x = 18, UU genome) during two different seasons has been studied. A low crossability rate of 3% average for all genotypes over two years was achieved. The observed variation of crossability is due to a greatest extent to the genotype of durum wheat parent with 82.91% from total variation. Hybrid plants were obtained only by means of embryo rescue method. The ability for in vitro regeneration was still independent of crossability of used durum wheat genotypes. All received F1 hybrids plants were identical they exhibited good tillering ability and manifested traits from both parents. In spite of the observed partially fertility in F1 hybrids between durum wheat and Aegilops umbellulata no germination of the hybrid seeds was ascertained. BC1 seeds were obtained from F1 hybrids of hybrid combination Beloslava × Aegilops umbellulata after backcrossing to the durum wheat parent. An increase of crossability with advancing of backcross progenies – from 1.6% in BC1 hybrids to 26.2% in BC2 hybrids has been found. Meiotic abnormalities including dyads and triads at the end of microsporogenesis as well as uninucleate microspores with a different shape and size were observed suggesting production of unreduced gametes in this cross.

(Strawberry tree) belongs to Ericaceae family, is an evergreen shrub or tree, mostly known around Mediterranean region in natural habitat, has valuable medicinal and aromatic properties. The plant is mainly used for its edible fruits. In addition, A. unedo have increasing importance in afforestration programmes, beekeeping facilities, ornamental purposes and elucidating plant physiology. Therefore, the species is seemingly a promising fruit plant. Orchards are very limited but increasing demand to the plant will result in initiations of establishment new fruit orchards with superior genotypes viz. tolerant to the abiotic stress, resistant to pests and diseases, rich contents in terms of valuable compounds, convenience to postharvest operations, being visually preferable and suitable to target climate. Plant breeding is an important component to overcome elimination of unwanted features and to reach admirable characters. The main steps in breeding are effective selection, succesfully adaptation and inheritance via transferring the features to subsequent generations.

(A. Fridlender, A. Raynal-Roques, 1998). Ce taxon est extrêmement localisé, puisque la totalité de la population connue se résume à une seule station comprenant de 100 à 145 individus, implantés sur les falaises granitiques du Massif de la Trinité (commune de Bonifacio).
