INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD A NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE MARK OSTEEN, LOYOLA COLLEGE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most books and articles with "jazz" in the title are not simply about music. Instead, their authors generally use jazz music to investigate or promulgate ideas about politics or race (e.g., that jazz exemplifies democratic or American values,* or that jazz epitomizes the history of twentieth-century African Americans); to illustrate a philosophy of art (either a Modernist one or a Romantic one); or to celebrate the music as an expression of broader human traits such as conversa- tion, flexibility, and hybridity (here "improvisation" is generally the touchstone). These explorations of the broader cultural meanings of jazz constitute what is being touted as the New Jazz Studies. This proliferation of the meanings of "jazz" is not a bad thing, and in any case it is probably inevitable, for jazz has been employed as an emblem of every- thing but mere music almost since its inception. As Lawrence Levine demon- strates, in its formative years jazz—with its vitality, its sexual charge, its use of new technologies of reproduction, its sheer noisiness—was for many Americans a symbol of modernity itself (433). It was scandalous, lowdown, classless, obscene, but it was also joyous, irrepressible, and unpretentious. The music was a battlefield on which the forces seeking to preserve European high culture met the upstarts of popular culture who celebrated innovation, speed, and novelty. It 'Crouch writes: "the demands on and respect for the individual in the jazz band put democracy into aesthetic action" (161). -

The Seminar was part of the Montgomery Arts Guild, an organization which was active in promoting and sponsoring cultural events. Held during July, the Seminar hosted readings by notable poets, offered creative writing workshops, held creative writing contests, and featured musical performances. -

Imprint:Oregon 1°A S Fall-Spring 1978-1979 °M z-i William Everson Waldport: an Interview with William Everson Introduction During World War II the problem of what to do with conscientious objectors who refused to engage in certain types of moreor less war-related work was resolved by the establishment of so-called ConscientiousObjectors Camps, more formallyCivilian Public Service Camps. They were sponsored by the "peace churches,"the Brethren, Mennonite and American Friends Service Committee. By 1945 there were more than 110 such camps and sub-camps throughout the United States. The origins and pur- poses of these camps are well described in the interview which follows. There were three such camps in Oregon: No. 21 (Cascade Locks) opened Dec. 5, 1941: No.56 (Waldport) opened Oct. 24, 1942: No.59 (Elkton) opened Nov.?, 1942. All were engaged in forest maintenance directed by the U. S. Forest Service or by the Oregon and California Revested Lands Administration, Such work consisted of tree planting, blister rust control, fire fighting and trail building, a continuation, essenti- ally, of work done formerly by the receniiy defunct Civilian Conservation Corps. In the usual manner of all such camps, the CO camps produced house organs, usual- ly weekly or monthly mimeographed newspapers. These papers were sponsoredand encouraged by the camp administration itself. winch regarded them as a harmless and even useful outlet for expression. There were, however, some exceptions tothis expec- tation. Among Oregon camps, for example, there wasa proliferation of camp newspapers out of Elkton. This may be partially explainedbythe fact that Elkton was operated as aheadquarters camp and sent contingentsto sub-camps located as far south as Kiam. -

BLAKE OR SEVERAL YEARS Bernard H. Porter, Colby 1932, has been Fcontributing his own work, his source material, and the relevant works of his associates to the Robinson Rare Book Room in the Colby College Library. Porter, a physicist who worked on the atomic bomb project during World War II and left it after Hiroshima, has been active in photography, illustra tion, writing, publishing and printing. He has been particularly interested in combinations of art forms and new and experi mental work. Much of his time during the 1940s and 50s was spent in California, where he contributed considerable material to little magazines and was particularly active in the formation and publication of four. The earliest, The Leaves Fall, was edited in Ohio from 1942-1945 by his friend Fred Lingel, an engineer. This four page leaflet, the only one of the four not published in Cali fornia, offered Porter a vehicle for his poems, essays, aphorisms and drawings, as well as an occasional chance to edit an issue. -
