    1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

Lizotte University of Washington Abstract The Geopolitics of Laïcité in a Multicultural Age: French Secularism, Educational Policy and the Spatial Management of Difference Christopher A. Lizotte Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Katharyne Mitchell Geography I examine a package of educational reforms enacted following the January 2015 attacks in and around Paris, most notably directed at the offices of the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. These interventions, known collectively as the “Great Mobilization for the Republic’s Values”, represent the latest in a string of educational attempts meant to reinvigorate a sense of national pride among immigrant-descended youth – especially Muslim – in France’s unique form of state secularism, laïcité. While ostensibly meant to apply equally across the nationalized French school system, in practice La Grande Mobilisation has been largely enacted in schools located in urban spaces of racialized difference thought to be “at risk” of anti-republican behavior. Through my work, I show that practitioners exercise their own power by subverting and adapting geopolitical discourses running through educational laïcité – notably global security, women’s rights, and communalism – are nuanced by school-based practitioners, who interpret state directives in the light of their institutional knowledge and responsiveness to the social and economic profiles of their student populations.

    Newsletter Issue 37, October 2017 WWI Legacy of the 5th Division repaired Activated on 11 Dec 1917, the Fifth Divi- sion arrived in France on 1 May 1918 and spent 104 days in the front line, suffering 2,120 killed and 6,996 wounded as they fought across St Mihiel, Frapelle, and the Meuse Argonne. Immediately after the WWI armistice, soldiers of the Fifth Divi- sion in France erected a series of 28 small concrete obelisks on all of the battlefields where the division had been fighting. They all include the distinctive red diamond insignia of the division, as well as a metal plaque giving details of the fighting in the area. Almost a century later, the years have not been kind to these field memorials, as pictured on the left found on the Route de Loupy by Juvigny. But thanks to a recent local initiative, most of these sites have been thorough- ly researched and completely renovated. Mr. Jean Marie of Dun-sur-Meuse has spearheaded this extraordinary effort conducted entirely with local volunteers and funds. The before and after pictures of the memorial shown are a testament to his efforts. He runs a remarkable private museum in his home town of Dun-sur-Meuse which is well worth a visit.     BATTLE OF THE BULGE 75th ANNIVERSARY A year of remembrance... A COLLABORATION BETWEEN EDITORIAL To simply pay tribute to the tens of thousands of American soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend democracy and freedom of expression 75 years after the Battle of the Bulge would be an insult to their memory. They deserve much more than just a ‘thank you’. Their sacrifice meant that Europe has been able to live in peace for three quarters of a century (except for the so-called civil wars which ravaged the former Yugoslavia). Today, however, war has multiple faces; it can advance surreptitiously and feed on fears and social or ethnic tensions. To honour these heroes is to try to adequately respond to the current threats to our democracies. Even in our region, freedom is not a given. It is a battle of hearts and minds that we must win every day; a battle of persuasion fought by individual citizens in the context of social exchanges, in schools and at home. It is a battle to ensure that the fundamental values of freedom, mutual respect and the fight against xenophobia and hatred are instilled deeply within us. Our gratitude to the young Americans who fell on the soil of the Ardennes is eternal. To them we owe our freedom. And to honour them we take action, today and tomorrow, to ensure that every citizen remembers and perpetuates the memory of their sacrifice for our freedom.
