It is the trans lator's belief that Merleau-Ponty's argument, as well as that of Koestler in Darkness at Noon (1946) raises questions that are still relevant to the fateful connection between revolu tion and violence. All the same, it may be useful to con temporary readers to recall some of the background to the dispute between Roestler and Merleau-Ponty and the way it involved intellectuals on the French left whether Commu nist or non-Communist. I shall not attempt to trace in any detail the postwar de velopments which are the setting for Humanism and Terror. -

Lizotte University of Washington Abstract The Geopolitics of Laïcité in a Multicultural Age: French Secularism, Educational Policy and the Spatial Management of Difference Christopher A. Lizotte Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Katharyne Mitchell Geography I examine a package of educational reforms enacted following the January 2015 attacks in and around Paris, most notably directed at the offices of the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. These interventions, known collectively as the “Great Mobilization for the Republic’s Values”, represent the latest in a string of educational attempts meant to reinvigorate a sense of national pride among immigrant-descended youth – especially Muslim – in France’s unique form of state secularism, laïcité. While ostensibly meant to apply equally across the nationalized French school system, in practice La Grande Mobilisation has been largely enacted in schools located in urban spaces of racialized difference thought to be “at risk” of anti-republican behavior. Through my work, I show that practitioners exercise their own power by subverting and adapting geopolitical discourses running through educational laïcité – notably global security, women’s rights, and communalism – are nuanced by school-based practitioners, who interpret state directives in the light of their institutional knowledge and responsiveness to the social and economic profiles of their student populations. -

The Liberty Road: Utah Beach to Bastogne WWI Legacy of the 5Th
Newsletter Issue 37, October 2017 WWI Legacy of the 5th Division repaired Activated on 11 Dec 1917, the Fifth Divi- sion arrived in France on 1 May 1918 and spent 104 days in the front line, suffering 2,120 killed and 6,996 wounded as they fought across St Mihiel, Frapelle, and the Meuse Argonne. Immediately after the WWI armistice, soldiers of the Fifth Divi- sion in France erected a series of 28 small concrete obelisks on all of the battlefields where the division had been fighting. They all include the distinctive red diamond insignia of the division, as well as a metal plaque giving details of the fighting in the area. Almost a century later, the years have not been kind to these field memorials, as pictured on the left found on the Route de Loupy by Juvigny. But thanks to a recent local initiative, most of these sites have been thorough- ly researched and completely renovated. Mr. Jean Marie of Dun-sur-Meuse has spearheaded this extraordinary effort conducted entirely with local volunteers and funds. The before and after pictures of the memorial shown are a testament to his efforts. He runs a remarkable private museum in his home town of Dun-sur-Meuse which is well worth a visit. The François ecosystem state has invested heavily in Faber | 1909 a network of cycling routes that is particularly extensive compared with the size of the population. Enthusiasts and casual cyclists can enjoy picturesque sceneries, for instance along the banks of the Moselle river, or more de- manding and spectacular routes, such as Nicolas through the country’s former opencast iron Frantz | 1927 ore mines.
