WATCHING TELEVISION WITH FRIENDS: TWEEN GIRLS’ INCLUSION OF TELEVISUAL MATERIAL IN FRIENDSHIP by CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Childhood Studies written under the direction of Daniel Thomas Cook and approved by ______________________________ Daniel T. Cook ______________________________ Anna Beresin ______________________________ Todd Wolfson Camden, New Jersey May 2016 ABSTRACT Watching Television with Friends: Tween Girls’ Inclusion of Televisual Material in Friendship By CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER Dissertation Director: Daniel Thomas Cook This qualitative work examines the role of tween live-action television shows in the friendships of four tween girls, providing insight into the use of televisual material in peer interactions. Over the course of one year and with the use of a video camera, I recorded, observed, hung out and watched television with the girls in the informal setting of a friend’s house. I found that friendship informs and filters understandings and use of tween television in daily conversations with friends. Using Erving Goffman’s theory of facework as a starting point, I introduce a new theoretical framework called friendship work to locate, examine, and understand how friendship is enacted on a granular level. Friendship work considers how an individual positions herself for her own needs before acknowledging the needs of her friends, and is concerned with both emotive effort and social impact. Through group television viewings, participation in television themed games, and the creation of webisodes, the girls strengthen, maintain, and diminish previously established bonds.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Brutal is an extremely ruthless or cruel. Brutality is the quality of being brutal, cruelty, and savagery. Brutality is one of the factors that are used to increase the terror; the other terror factors are violence, sadism, and graphic blood. Brutality is the part of cruelty. Cruelty is one of the danger signals of personality sickness. A “sick” personality is one in which there is a breakdown in the personality structure which results in poor personal and social adjustment, just as in physical illness, the person does not behave as he normally does (Hurlock, 1979: 389-403). Brutality in A Nightmare on Elm Street Movie is reflected by the main characters, namely Krueger. He kills many teenagers through their dreams, it is called “A Nightmare” and this phenomenon happens on Elm Street. So, it is the reason why this film is entitled “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 2010 American slasher film directed by Samuel Bayer, and written by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer, based on a story by Mr. Strick and characters created by Wes Craven; director of photography, Jeff Cutter; edited by Glen Scantlebury; music by Steve Jablonsky; production designer, Patrick Lumb; costumes by Mari-An Ceo; produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller; released by New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers Pictures and Platinum Dunes. Running time: 1 1 2 hour 42 minutes. The film stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker and Kellan Lutz. It is a remake of Wes Craven's 1984 film of the same name and the ninth Nightmare film in total, it is designed to reboot the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

Lauren Gussis Presented by: Keara Friberg Lauren Gussis is the creator of the Netflix series, “Insatiable.” The show’s basic premise is about a girl who loses weight after being bullied for being fat, and decides to get revenge on her bullies by becoming a pageant queen. The show has received much criticism for “fat-shaming” and the objectification of women. However, the show’s creator Lauren Gussis has dealt with an eating disorder in the past, and created the show in order to tell her own story through it’s characters. “I also think that in art, "should" is a very, very dangerous word. I think that if we try to tell people how they should tell their stories, if we try to silence them, then we are doing the opposite of what art needs to do, which is to spark conversation and I think we are, as a society, getting very close to the dangers of censorship. And I think that if we tell people, and artists specifically, that you can only tell a story in a certain way and you are only allowed to tell a story in a way that makes me feel comfortable, then we're never offering ourselves an opportunity to grow and that artists have the right and the obligation to tell their own truths and not be told that they should tell it a certain way.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-81WVD8xTs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J-2iI6k8aM “The way that we shot that scene, it's one continuous shot so that we could show what it actually looks like for a person who looks like Debby Ryan to eat an entire cake.

More recently, the superhero narrative has moved from cinema to television, which allows for the narratives to address more pressing cultural concerns in a more immediate fashion. Furthermore, millions of viewers perpetuate the televised narratives because they resonate with the values and stories in the shows. Through Fantasy Theme Analysis, this project examines the audience values within the Arrow’s superhero fantasy and the influence of posthumanism on the show’s superhero fantasy.

Bangkok Post Learning: Test Yourself Test Yourself is where you can improve your reading skills. Whether it’s for tests like University Entrance Exams or IELTS and TOEFL, or even just for fun, these stories help you to read, understand and improve your English. Never enough by Gary Boyle Photo courtesy of Netflix Read the following story by Tatat Bunnag from the Bangkok Post. Then, answer the questions that follow. Netflix’s darkly comic series Insatiable returned for a second season last week. A little over a year after it first premiered, Insatiable is back with 10 brand new episodes. The show follows the roller-coaster life of a formerly bullied overweight teen who transforms into a slim and attractive girl, enters the beauty pageant competition scene and begins to seek revenge on those who shamed and bullied her in the past. BAD FEEDBACK Despite a generally hostile reception from critics, Insatiable found an audience across the globe, especially in Asian countries. The show recently held a press conference and fan meeting in Manila, the Philippines, with stars Debby Ryan and Dallas Roberts. Following the shocking and abrupt ending to the first season, we rejoin Insatiable with Patty Bladell (Debby Ryan) coming to terms with her past, battling her inner demons and following her pageant dreams. “I think that if you watched season one … we get to see Patty on this journey of really trying to find herself and see why she continues to make some bad decisions,” said Ryan. "I think in season two, you begin to see her become more self-aware and more self-assured.” Roberts returns as Bob Armstrong, a former pageant coach who sees Patty as his chance to return to the world of beauty contests and decides to take care of her.

2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW OF IMTA ALUMS ON THE SMALL SCREEN IMTA Press Release September 6, 2018 Each fall as a new television season begins, it is gratifying to note the IMTA alumni who add to their résumés with work on “television.” In the 21st Century, “television” is not just a “smart” TV, but any portable device or computer with internet access. Networks and cable channels produce their own line-up of original shows and films, as do streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu…and soon, Apple TV. YouTube and Vimeo serve as platforms for independent filmmakers and writers to release original series and films. All of these outlets provide unlimited—and ongoing—possibilities for IMTA alumni to appear on “the small screen” by making their full catalog of shows, new and old, available on-line so that they may be viewed year-round, 24-7. Below are just a few of the IMTA alumni working on network, cable or web series, appearing on returning or new series in regular or recurring roles, announced guest-starring appearances, and lead or supporting roles in TV movies and mini-series. Our apologies for any names missing. IMTA is equally proud of all of the alumni working in the entertainment industry and we try to keep track of as many as we can. Please let us know of castings, guest appearances and other successes of IMTA alums. IMTA alum Amy Acker returns for the second season of the FOX series “The Gifted” on September 25. The action-adventure family drama from Marvel tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers.
