  • Posted 02/05/09] Stenhousemuir Were the Visitors to the Old Ground on Saturday As the SNCL Kicked Off for - Let's Hope - the Last Time
Week one, win one [posted 02/05/09] Stenhousemuir were the visitors to the old ground on Saturday as the SNCL kicked off for - let's hope - the last time. The 'Loc hadn't played the maroon marauders from deepest darkest Larbert since 2003 as the clubs avoided each other in different divisions, and so it wasn't surprising that, bar respective veteran ever-presents Ferrier and Gardner, and Spence and Sheridan, the players on parade had no idea what to expect from each other. Mind you, that said, the two sides' pro's were rivals back in South African domestic cricket. Brian Spence's first job was - of course - to lose the toss, or more accurately watch as his Stennie counterpart win it. Batting. Why? Probably the visitors' skipper thinking being that wet weather in the days leading up to the game must've meant there was "something" in the pitch. And of course he was right; what was in it was water. Lots of it. HoVR opened with Captain Spence, and 15 was on the 'board when the latter was cleaned up by Angus [Ed: that's his surname!]. Dan then came and went for 2 and it was 28 for 2 when Bean joined the pro'. 26 runs later and HoVR had his fourth batting partner of the day as Nichty strode out. Determined to show that his deck was perfectly playable the Big Man would go on to top score in the innings, batting with almost as many partners as HovR - his 32 added to Hancke's 31 and Maddy 's 27 late on being the three scores around which a defendable total were built.

  • Third Sector Resilience Fund Summary of Grants to Sport Organisations up to 5 June 2020
Non-protected Coronavirus (COVID-19) Third Sector Resilience Fund Summary of grants to sport organisations up to 5 June 2020 Introduction This document provides a summary of grants made to organisations in the sporting system from the Third Sector Resilience Fund (the Fund) up to 5 June 2020. The information is in the public domain so can be used for internal intelligence and aspects shared with partners as appropriate (e.g. informing SGBs of member clubs that have been awarded grants from the fund). Details of the Fund are available here. A full list of sport organisations receiving grants is included at the end of the document. Details of all awards made through the Fund up to 5 June are available here. Analysis Overall the Fund has made 1,147 grant awards totaling £20.63million. Initially the total available funding was £20m, but the Scottish Government has now pledged additional funding. Using a broad definition of organisations within the sporting system: • 247 grants (21.5% of total) have been made to sporting organisations totaling £3.59m (17.4%). • Of these awards to sport organisations, 116 clubs and 131 community organisations have received grants, with clubs receiving an average of £7.9k and community groups £20.4k. • A wide range of sports have been supported, with multisport organisations the most common (59 grants). Football is the most common single-sport organisations (33), followed by bowls (27), gymnastics (19), cycling (12), outdoor (11), and boxing (10). • Looking just as sports clubs, the breakdown by sports is bowls (27), gymnastics (19), football (15), boxing (10), golf and multi-sport (9 each), rugby (8), cricket (6), basketball and hockey (2 each), and a selection of other sports all have had one award.

  • Parishes and Congregations: Names No Longer in Use
S E C T I O N 9 A Parishes and Congregations: names no longer in use The following list updates and corrects the ‘Index of Discontinued Parish and Congregational Names’ in the previous online section of the Year Book. As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. Where the former name has not disappeared completely, and the whereabouts of the former parish or congregation may therefore be easily established by reference to the name of some existing parish, the former name has not been included in this list. Present-day names, in the right-hand column of this list, may be found in the ‘Index of Parishes and Places’ near the end of the book. The following examples will illustrate some of the criteria used to determine whether a name should be included or not: • Where all the former congregations in a town have been united into one, as in the case of Melrose or Selkirk, the names of these former congregations have not been included; but in the case of towns with more than one congregation, such as Galashiels or Hawick, the names of the various constituent congregations are listed.

  • George Goddard
George Goddard George Goddard was born in 1938 to James Williams Goddard, a Lithographer and a Helen Agnes Dalgleish. They were married in 1934 at Murrayfield Parish Church. George’s parents both lived to a good age of 87 & 88 respectively. His grandfather Samuel James Godard, a Policeman, was born 1874 in England and he was married to Catherine Ferguson. They got married Bedlormie Hall, Shotts in Lanarkshire. Please see the family tree part of George’s profile for more information. George went to George Heriot’s School. George married Margaret Hunter in Edinburgh 1964. School photo from 1955, George is sitting third from the right He made his debut aged 19 in 1957 for Heriot’s, a year later Hamish More made his debut. George is well known for his bowling but when he started playing for the club it was as a batsman, where his off break bowling came along later. George took over the Heriot’s captaincy in 1961 from Ian Thomson. In there is a little note in Hector MacQueen’s book that George declared the Heriot’s innings in a match v Leith Franklin with Hamish More on 99*. Apparently time was vital to win the game which turned out to be true as the last wicket to win was taken in the last over. He was captain in 1962 and then stepped down for Murray Cooper to take over. George took over the captaincy again in 1968 and carried on until 1972. This was a good time from the club as they won the East League in 1969 & 1970.

National Performance Centre for Sport Stage 1 bid document appendices Putting sport first APPENDIX 1 SPORT GOVERNING BODY DATA SHEETS SGBs Data Sheets This section contains data sheets on each of the SGBs that have expressed an interest in being part of the NPCS. Following the initial expressions of interest, sportscotland consulted with each of the SGBs concerned, to develop a clear understanding of any gaps they have in their facilities networks and to establish the extent to which they would use the NPCS. As a result of this work, sports which have identified a strategic need for performance facilities in key geographic areas have been highlighted with a primary need at the NPCS. Other sports which could take advantage of using the core facilities but do not have this primary need at performance level have been highlighted as a secondary users in the table below. Primary Need Secondary Use Athletics Badminton Basketball Cricket Football Equestrian Rugby Handball Tennis Hockey Volleyball Shinty Squash and Racketball SGB Information The information in the attached sheets should be used for guidance only and may change during the bid process. Further details of their facility requirement, usage and location preferences can be obtained from either the SGBs or sportscotland. It would be unrealistic for us to expect that all of the facility requirements identified by SGBs could be delivered through the NPCS. While our focus will be on ensuring the core facilities are delivered, we do want potential bidders to take cognisance of the geographical gaps identified by these SGBs when they are developing their bids.

  • Lost Grounds in the West
The following photographs, press cuttings, advertisements, information and statistics are all available to view and download off the internet. A wee bit of time and patience with your research, together with copious amounts of coffee and John Player Special cigarettes, you too could go on a journey of discovery that gives you an insight to the cricket that has been lost and the current cricket that could be lost in the very near future. My thanks to the following databases for their information. North Lanarkshire Council Archives Over the last 25 years, the cricket that we have grown up with, knew and loved has changed. The Western Union has merged with the Glasgow League, the Scottish Counties championship has folded, the Strathmore Union has merged with the Perthshire league and the East of Scotland Cricket Association has picked up all the waifs and strays. The Scottish National Cricket League arrived and the security of a centenary of tradition changed. For the better? I will leave you to make up your own minds on that question. The Western District Cricket Union currently has 32 clubs that play Saturday cricket (61 teams). Add the 5 evening/Sunday League clubs, the total becomes 37 clubs in all. 1) Active Life 2) Ardrossan 3) Bute County 4) Galloway 1) Ayr 5) GHK 2) Clydesdale 6) Glasgow Accies 3) Drumpellier 7) GU Staff 4) Dumfries 1) BBC Scotland 8) Hamilton 5) East Kilbride 2) Clyde 9) Helensburgh 6) Ferguslie 3) Fire Service 10) Hillhead 7) Greenock 4) GU Biologists 11) Inverclyde 8) Kelburne 5) Queens Park 12) Irvine 9) Poloc 13) Kilmarnock 10) Renfrew 14) Motherwell 11) Uddingston 15) Prestwick 12) Weirs 16) Scot Indians 13) West of Scotland 17) St Michaels 18) Vale of Leven 19) Victoria 25 years ago in the west, we had a strong Western Union with three separate championships therein.

  • Clydesdale Cricket Club
CLYDESDALE CRICKET CLUB MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM 2015/2016 Clydesdale Cricket Club 22 Beaton Road Pollokshields Glasgow G41 4LA 0141 423 1463 Clydesdale Cricket Club was founded in Kinning Park in 1848, making it the third oldest-established in Scotland and probably Glasgow's oldest surviving team sports organisation. The club has a continuous distinguished history. In its early years, Clydesdale also played football, and were influential in the setting up of the Scottish Football Association in 1870. Soon after, in 1874, the club's footballers were the losing finalists against Queen's Park in the first Scottish Cup final. The subscription rates are determined each year at the Annual General Meeting, which is normally held at the end of June. Hockey players' subscriptions are due on 1st September, cricket players on 1st April, with non-playing social membership subscriptions due on 1st January. Family membership is due at the time of the section in which the members, junior or senior, are playing. Your year's subscription will be in accordance with these timings, irrespective of your date of admission to membership of the Club. As part of our aim to promote a family atmosphere, we have introduced a scheme to encourage 'family membership'. This entitles all your children under 18 to free junior membership of the club if two or more adults from the same household are either playing or non-playing members. Please note that each member is entitled to be accompanied by guests, each of whom can be signed in on up to six occasions per year. The club, however, is keen that members encourage their friends to join the club as members in their own right.
