MB Stanger Trophy winner [posted 04/12/16] Mike Stanger presented the MB Stanger Trophy to Gregor Chambers of Helensburgh CC, the trophy's 2017 winner, today. Gregor (pictured left being presented with the Trophy by Mike at a West Regional Academy session) was selected as this year's recipient by Mike after nominations from WDJCU clubs had produced a strong shortlist of candidates. The citation from Helensburgh CC supporting Gregor's nomination included the following which perfectly summarises what the trophy is all about, "The basis for Gregor's nomination is his performance on the field, the commitment he has shown to improving his own game and his overall, ongoing support to the Club, and in particular the Junior Section." Well done to Gregor, and congratulations too, to the other shortlisted nominees, Adam Khan of Hillhead CC and Jacques Grosvenor of Stirling County CC. Gregor Chambers's name is added therefore to the list of recipients of this most prestigious of awards, in this the Trophy's tenth year. November 2016 2017 WDJCU league and cup competition registration [posted 08/11/16] Clubs can now register - online here - for the WDJCU's 2017 leagues and cup competitions. Registration, as agreed at last night's AGM, is open until 31 December 2016, and clubs are requested to fill in the webform completely and accurately. AGM [posted 07/11/16] The WDJCU AGM took place this evening at "Shawholm". The meeting attended to all of the scheduled business, re-electing Dougie Johnstone as Chairman for a further two-year term of office. Parvase Majeed was elected as Vice-Chairman, succeeding Bob Coats. Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, Keith Young and Colin Dawson, and Committee member Tim Hart, were also re-elected for further two-year terms. Newly-appointed to the Committee were Michael Bang and Ann Hargie. In other business, a number of changes to competition playing conditions were proposed, seconded and passed by member clubs. These included the Frank Smith Trophy changing to an Under 16 competition from its 2017 playing. A proposal to amend the league points system was also passed, 3 points being awarded for a win from season 2017, with a losing side in a match that was played getting 1 point, and -1 point being deducted for a concession. Less severe penalties for concessions were also agreed to by attendees, and the restriction on clubs only being able to combine with one other club across all age-groups in a single season was changed to allow combinations with any other club at any age-group, up to a maximum of five other clubs should a club enter all five age-group leagues. The AGM also heard that clubs could opt to use pink or red balls in all WDJCU competitions in 2017, and that Under 10 "Kwik Cricket" festivals would be organised by Area Groups in 2017, reverting to each being open to all clubs. In attendance at the meeting was Cricket Scotland's recently-appointed new Women's and Girls' Participation Manager Nicola Wilson who, in turn, introduced her west region colleague Rosy Ryan, who is based in Dumfries. Clubs were also reminded of the deadline for nominations for the prestigious MB Stanger Trophy, nominations to be intimated to Keith Young by 30 November 2016 for consideration by the trophy's eponymous donor, and that entries to 2017 WDJCU competitions would close on 31 December 2016. In closing the meeting, Chairman Dougie Johnstone thanked the 28 attendees, and acknowledged their and their fellow club volunteers' efforts over the course of the preceding year. September 2016 WDJCU "Kwik Cricket" festivals review [posted 25/09/16] Tim Hart writes, "The WDJCU 'Kwik Cricket' season officially ended on Sunday 25th September, with an indoor festival, which took place at Hutchesons' Grammar School. The six players-per-side format, played with no boundaries and the unusual feature of the ball being able to rebound off of the roof and walls, certainly gave the participants a very different challenge! Three clubs attended (Clydesdale CC, East Renfrewshire CC and Uddingston CC) – with East Renfrewshire CC winning both their matches to win the festival. Thanks, as always, to the players for their effort and enthusiasm and to the coaches and parents who made the festival possible." Under 10 indoor "Kwik Cricket" tournament [posted 18/09/16] The WDJCU are again running an end-of-season indoor Under 10 "Kwik Cricket" tournament this year. Being held on Sunday the 25th of September, at Hutchesons' Grammar School Sports Hall in Glasgow, the tournament runs from 10 am to 12.30pm and is open to all clubs. Teams are six-a-side, and two matches will be played side- by-side making it an all-action crash-bang-wallop day of action for players. There's an entry form online, entries being accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.
