  • The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna
Article Between Yerushalayim DeLita and Jerusalem— The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Jon Seligman Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem 91004, Israel; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2020; Accepted: 18 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: During excavations of the bimah (the platform for reading the Torah) of the 17th-century Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius, Lithuania), an important memorial inscription was exposed. This paper describes the new finds associated with the baroque-rococo architecture of the bimah and focuses on the inscription and its meaning. The Hebrew inscription, engraved on a large stone slab, is a complex rabbinic text filled with biblical allusions, symbolism, gematria, and abbreviations. The text describes the donation of a Torah reading table in 1796 in honour of R. Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and of Sarah by their sons, R. Eliezer and Shmuel. The inscription notes the aliyah (emigration) of Ḥayim and Sarah to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel. The interpretation of the inscription shows the use of multiple messianic motifs. Historical analysis identifies the involvement of the Vilna community with the support of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Ottoman Palestine) and the aliyah of senior scholars and community leaders at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Amongst these figures were Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and Sarah, with Ḥayim ben Ḥayim going on to represent the Vilna community in the Land of Israel as its emissary, distributing charitable donations to the scholarly Ashkenazi community resident in Tiberias, Safed, and later Jerusalem. Keywords: Vilna/Vilnius; synagogue; bimah; inscription; Jerusalem; aliyah Over the past five years (2016–2019), a consortium of researchers 1 has been conducting archaeological research on the site of the Great Synagogue and Shulhoyf (synagogue courtyard) of Vilna (present-day Vilnius in Lithuania).

This is the accepted version of an article accepted for publication in African and Black Diaspora published by Taylor & Francis. Please refer to the published version when citing: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17528631.2015.1083181 Accepted version downloaded from SOAS Research Online: http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/22694/ Bole to Harlem via Tel Aviv:i Networks of Ethiopia’s Musical Diaspora Ilan Webster-Kogen, SOAS University of London – Department of Music One of the fastest-growing sources of domestic labor in the Global North is Ethiopia, whose female population travels to North America, Europe and the developed Middle East to work for remittances to send home. Once these migrants settle in cities like London, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv, Rome or Toronto, they organize themselves into cultural enclaves that navigate their positionality viz. the state, religious practice, and their bodies. While scholars are occasionally interested in the explicit security ramifications of absorbing these migrant workforces, they pay less attention to the cultural forces propelling citizenship, and to migrants’ relationship with their home culture. This gap in knowledge is counter-productive, because scholars and policymakers will have trouble assessing the Ethiopian migrant population’s perspective through interview material alone. The Ethiopian values of honor and respect for authority dictate a hesitance to criticize explicitly, so the population’s feelings about marginality rarely emerge in discussion about labor. This taboo curtails the effectiveness of typical ethnographic methods (e.g. interviewing). Rather, this article examines Ethiopian music as a prism through which migrant musicians navigate the complex web of religious, ethnic, national and embodied identities in their new surroundings.

  • Migration and Music Music.” Music Research Annual 1: 1–24
Stokes, Martin. 2020. “Migration and Migration and Music Music.” Music Research Annual 1: 1–24. martin stokes ABSTRACT: The current sense of crisis in the study of migration and music calls out for a broader contextualization. The study of migrant culture sat comfortably for a while with a structural-functionalist culture concept emphasizing boundedness and stasis, figured astransitional , adaptive, evidence of modernization or Westernization. An orientation toward hybridity in the 1980s began to shake some of these certainties, even if it kept others (the normative framework of the nation-state) in place. This article argues that work on refugees and diasporas at around the same time departed from them more radically. The current moment is one in which the final vestiges of language about migrant culture as adaptive have been swept away and in which the populist evocation of a migrant crisis at our gates has posed unsettling challenges. This article explores the tensions in the current literature between an emphasis on migrant creativity and survival, mobility and motility, and identity and citizenship. KEYWORDS: music, dance, migration, refugees, mobility, citizenship MARTIN STOKES is King Edward Professor of Music at King’s College London. Marked as it is by a sense of crisis, the field of music and migration has become “impossible to map,” as one recent commentator observes (Aksoy 2019, 299). The measured language of the social sciences and the humani- ties—contextualizing, explaining, interpreting—does not fit easily with the emotions many of us surely feel at the news that flashes across our screens. Another boat laden with migrants sinks.
