Freemans Journal 31 Oct 1874 BRAVERY REWARDED.

The Southern Argus says : — The hall of the Mechanics' Institute was largely attended on Tuesday evening, to witness the presentation to Mr. Walter John Pitty of a commemorative medal, with regard to his gallant rescue of Mr. William Davies from the rushing waters of the Wollondilly River, when the floods were swelling the stream to an unwonted breadth and height on the night of the 4th of September last.

This public recognition of true heroism, where a man was not rewarded for destroying many lives, but for saving one life, had peculiarly attractive features about it, and more especially on account of the honorary portion of the proceedings being supplemented by the substantial proof, in the shape of a purse of gold containing £70, of how the brave efforts of Mr. Pitty were appreciated by those in the vicinity of where here sided. The mayor presided, and made the presentation. The medal, which is a silver one, weighs4oz, representing on one side the rescue of a drowning individual, and on the reverse are inscribed the following words : Presented to Walter John Pitty by the inhabitants of Goulburn and district in recognition of his bravery in rescuing a fellow-citizen from drowning in the Wollondilly River, September 4th, 1874.' One ach side are laurel and fern wreaths, which give to the whole a very handsome appearance. It is from the establishment of Mr. H. S. Clarke, jeweller. .

The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle 5 Sept 1874

MELANOCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT.

An our one o'clock on Thursday Mr. William Davies, Mr. I. l. Batchford, and Walter John Pitty, one of Mr. Davison' employee, left Goulburn for Crookwell in a buggy with pair of horses, Pitty driving. They found the road in a moat terrible condition, and got bogged and one of traces bars broken before reaching Crookwell. They started to return yesterday, and when within at low miles of Goulburn were again bogged, and again had a bar broken.

Having replaced it they continued their journey, and reached the Wollondilly River at the crossing known as Rossi's about six o'clock. There had been rain the previous night, and the river was high. Mr. Davies and Mr. Blatchford examined the place, and determined to attempt the passage at the usual crossing, Pitty recommending to go a little higher up the stream. They went right till within a few yards of the bank, when one of the traces broke, and on urging forward the horses another broke also. Each horse was now hold only by a single trace, the inner trace of the one and the outer of the other. All this time the water was rising with extreme rapidity.

After consultation, Pitty, who is an excellent swimmer, took off his coats, swam ashore, and ran up to Mr. Rossi's house for assistance. He got a rope and ran back, others following. As he returned, he saw the buggy turn over and the occupants spring out. They were at once carried away by the current. On reaching the bank, Pitty throw the rope to the nearest person, but he was unable to grasp it; and Pitty at once plunged in, succeeded to in reaching him, caught him by the shoulder, and brought him safely to land. The person thus saved proved to be Mr Davies. He was insensible for a few minutes; but shortly recovered so far that with the assistance of two men he walked up to Mr. Rossi's. Mr. Blatchford was not seen after springing out of the vehicle, and there appears unfortunately no room to doubt that he has been drowned.

The horses have been recovered, and the vehicle lies bottom up with the wheels just visible. Information was brought to town shortly after and Dr. Morton went out to see Mr. Davies. The police and many others went out to the spot; but owing to its being dark, it is feared that there cannot be a result .Mr. Blatchford was a very old resident of Goulburn, where he has reared a large family most creditably, several being now grown up. He was formerly in business as general storekeeper, and afterwards grocer, and lately had .been engaged in mining at Junction Point. It is only right to say that in the trying position in which Pitty was placed he behaved most courageously and that his conduct is deserving of the highest praise.

Goulburn Evening Penny Post 12 Aug 1931 LOOKING BACK

Veteran Teamster Many interesting reminiscences are recalled by Mr. and Mrs. W. Painter, of Stair Hill, Braidwood Road, who celebrated their golden wedding on Monday last. As a young man Mr. Painter, who is 80 years of age, had some unusual experiences as a teamster in the "out back" districts. He drove bullock teams for many hundreds of miles and on occasions was bogged for days at a time. The difficulties under which he travelled may be gauged from the fact that often he was able to look back after a full day's journey and see the spot where he had camped the previous night. Mr. Painter later joined the N.S.W Railway Department and saw 28 years service. Mr. Painter was born In the Goulburn district in 1851 and his wife was born at Camden in 1861. About 50 relatives and friends, including several grand-children and great grand children gathered at the home of the aged couple to celebrate their golden wedding. On behalf of the family, Mr. J. Painter presented his father and mother with two easy chairs, expressing the hope that they would derive much pleasure from the use of the chairs as had been experienced by, members of the family in making the presentation. Mr. Painter senior, in early voiced gratification at the fact that all surviving members of the family were present at the happy reunion. Supper was provided and a happy evening was spent. Toasts, were proposed by Mr. Thomas, grandson, and Mr. D. Weir. son-in-law. After supper, dancing was indulged in. Mr. and Mrs. Painter had a family of 10, six of whom are living. There are 18 grand-children and six great grand-children

ON Sunday night as Mr. Isaac Painter of Carrick was returning home from Goulburn and had reached Towrang he met with a painful accident. It appears there is a quantity of contract gravel on the centre of the road, and the night being dark and not light to indicate the presence of the gravel, neither horse nor rider saw it. The horse fell over it and rolled on top of Mr. Painter, who had two front teeth knocked out, his mouth severe abrasions to the nose, and was badly bruised on the left side and shoulder. He made it to Goulburn this morning for medical treatment.

MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY.

On Saturday, Mr. O'Brian, coroner held a magisterial inquiry at the residence of Mr .Charles Bowden, Pine Valley, near Baw Baw, touching on the death of Cecil Bowden, aged five and a half years. The evidence elicited showed that deceased and his older half-brother were cutting wood about 400 yards from the house on Monday last, when deceased was knocked down by the limb of a tree falling upon him. He received a fracture of the frontal bone, causing pressure on the brain. He remained conscious for four days, but from the first Dr. McKillop considered the case a hopeless one. He died on Saturday morning from inflammation caused by pressure on the brain. The finding was that death was the result of injuries accidently received.

KILLED BY A FALLING TREE.

Mr Harold O’Brien coroner, hold a magisterial inquiry at the residence of Mr. Charles Bowden ,Pine Valley, Baw Baw, on Saturday touching the death of Cecil John Bowden. Sarah Bowden, wife of John Bowdon and mother of deceased, deposed that deceased was 5. years of age: on Monday last he and his brother went out together to cut wood; the brother will be 11 years old next month; they were away only a short time, when the elder brother came back: he said," Mother, the tree has fell on Cecil;" witness ran at once to where deceased was, about 100 yards away; deceased was sitting up with his arm holding a limb of the tree: the tree was lying alongside him and he was sitting in the branches; he was conscious; witness asked him where he was hurt, and he said, "I'm hurt all over;" he said he went to chop a little sapling down and the wind was blowing the opposite way and it blew over on .top of them; witness brought him home and took him into Goulburn to the doctor; on Thursday deceased became unconscious, and he died at half-past 4o'clock on Saturday morning.

William Henry Lenehan, half-brother of the deceased, who went with him to chop some wood, deposed We commenced chopping at a tree; we chopped it about half through; it was a good-sized tree; deceased then asked me to wait till he fell another little tree; I waited, and he was just starting to cut it when the tree we had been cutting at-was blown down by the wind; it fell the opposite way to where we bad been cutting it; I heard the tree falling and ran and called out to him to run out of the way, but instead of doing so he stopped to pick up the axe he got the axe and followed me, but before he got away the tree caught him just on the shoulders; it knocked him down; I lifted the limbs and asked him to got away from under and he did so; he said, "Lift me up;" I did so; he said,” Set me on the log," and I did so; I asked him did he think he could stay there till I ran home for mother; he said, "Yes;" we had often cut trees down before this. Dr. McKillop, who had made a post mortem examination, deposed that there were several small wounds in the scalp and also a fracture of the frontal bone extending about 3 inches long and another about 11 inches running vertically to the other; the bone was depressed and pressing on the brain, also some clots on the brain; the cause of death was inflammation of the membranes of the brain, produced by the clots and the depressed fracture; the case was hopeless. The finding was death from injuries accidentally received.

Goulburn Evening Penny Post 13 Dec 1884

EXPOSING A CHILDAT the Goulburn Police Court on Friday, before the Police Magistrate and Mr. Ball, Sophia Stoney and George Painter were charged with exposing a male child, 14 days old, at Woodhouselee, on the 29th of November. Messrs. Betts and Davidson appeared for the defendants. Sub-inspector Fenton deposed; I produce two letters (the letters were objected to by the solicitors); I saw the male defendant outside the hospital on the 9th of December; I said, " I suppose you took this child with your mother and placed it on McInnes's doorstop?" he said his mother had nothing to do with it, and that he himself placed it on the doorstep; I said to him that his mother had taken the child from the hospital ; he said he had taken it from his mother's place, placed it on the doorstep, and watched it till he saw Mrs. McInnes take it in. To Mr. Davidson: I have known the male defendant for some years; I know nothing against his character; I do not know the female defendant; I know that the girl has been suffering from St. Vitus's dance. Betsy McInnes deposed: I am the wife of John Mclnnes, and live at Woodhouselee; I found a child on my doorstep on the 30th of last month; the child was in a basket, covered with a shawl: it was a male child; it had a bottle of condensed milk(the nurse of the hospital here produced the child);it was dressed in usual clothes for a child--(a note was here put in, which was in the basket with the baby) : I took possession of the child; I sent my husband for the police; the child was under a month old.(A letter was produced which was received from the post on the Thursday following, and which was given to the police. I brought the child to Goulburn on Tuesday last, and took it to the hospital, accompanied by the sub inspector. To Mr. Betts: It was a fine morning; there was no wind or dew; the child was very comfortable, and had plenty of clothes round it; the milk was warm: the child was fast asleep; I could not come out of the door without seeing the child; it being Sunday I was up rather late; it is the only door leading outside from the house at which the child was placed; the house is only a few yards from the main road; there is a wheat paddock on the opposite side of the road: there was nothing about that would hurt the child in any way; I have a son named Alexander. :Examined by Sub-Inspector Fenton: I don't know Mrs. Stoney; but I know where she lives; it is about 10 miles from my place; defendant has not spoken to me since I was subpoenaed. Elizabeth Guille deposed: I am matron of the Goulburn hospital; I am the wife of Edward Guille; I know Theresa Jane Painter; I am not positive if Mrs. Stoney is the person who brought the girl both defendants have visited the hospital; on the 17th of last month she was delivered of a male child in the presence of myself and Dr. Ray in the hospital; on the 28th I saw both defendants at the hospital; the child was taken away on the afternoon of that day by the defendants; the child was well dressed when it left the hospital, and did not go away in a basket; •I was not present the whole of the time Mrs. Stoney was there; the child was brought back on Tuesday last to the hospital by Mrs. McInnes; in my opinion the child's health would be injured by being exposed to the open air at such an early hour in the morning; I would not risk a child myself that way. To Mr. Davidson: Defendant paid for the admission of his daughter to the hospital; Painter did all in his power for the benefit of his daughter; the child was weak; if the child was well wrapped in warm clothing in the morning it would be in more danger than at night time, because it is colder; it would sustain a shock to the system. Dr. Gentle deposed: I have seen the child; a child so young would be in danger by being exposed to the air at such an early hour. To Mr. Betts: It is a common thing for children 13 days old to be out, but not at six o'clock in the morning; even if the morning were warm the child would probably receive an injury ; I have examined the child and it appears healthy with the exception of a slight thrush; I think it undesirable to leave a child in the open atmosphere. Edward Guille deposed: I am the superintendent of the Goulburn hospital; I know defendant; I recollect a child of Jane Painter being taken away from the hospital; I saw both defendants at the hospital; I afterwards saw the defendant Painter in Auburn-street, and he said he had sent his mother away with the child. To Mr. Betts: Painter referred, I believe, to there removal of the child from the hospital. Jane Painter was a called for, but being very ill, her evidence was not taken. Betsy McInnes, recalled, said that the milk was warm and wrapped up in a blanket, and it should have kept warm for a couple of hours; I have known bottle of milk to keep warm if wrapped up. Mr. Betts then addressed the Bench, and said that the evidence for the Crown did not in any way whatever show that the child was likely to have lost its life. Both defendants were committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, to be held in Goulburn on Thursday next. Bail allowed-defendants in £50 each, and two sureties of £25 each. Goulburn Quarter Sessions. Goulburn Quarter Sessions. Goulburn Penny Post 19 Dec 1884

The Goulburn Quarter Sessions began and finished yesterday. Several cases were heard, but only a couple of them were of general importance. Sophia Stoney and George Painter were charged with having endangered the life of a child under 14 days of age, by having exposed it. The defendants, -who pleaded not guilty, were defended by Messrs. Betts and Davidson, solicitors. Both of the accused were acquitted

STEALING IN COMPANY. Three charges, two in company with Victor Roy Horwood, were preferred against Eric Nichol (33), carter, in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. P.M. Hishon, P.M. Nichol was charged that, on April13, at Kedron, he stole a quantity of cigarettes and tobacco, of a total value of £2/10/, the property of Emily Florence May Wilson.

Sub-inspector W. Lipp stated that defendant, when taxed, admitted the theft, and said he had sold the goods to someone for 12/6. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two months imprisonment.

Nichol and Victor Roy Horwood 17), labourer, were charged that, on April 14, at Brisbane, they unlawfully used a motor car without the consent of the owner, William Edwin Hurst. Defendants pleaded guilty.

Sub-inspector Lipp said that on April 15 the car was found abandoned in a laneway off Creek-street. The car had been driven a considerable distance without oil or water, and it was estimated that its repair would cost about £50. The car had been driven to Pimpama Island, from where some goods had been taken to a house at Spring Hill. There was no doubt that Horwood had been influenced by Nichol.

Both defendants were sentenced to two months' imprisonment. A further charge was preferred against Nichol and Horwood that, on or about April 14, at Pimpama, near Beenleigh, they broke and entered the shop of James Lloyd Fountain, and stole 10 bags of flour, two tins of petrol, a quantity of groceries and tobacco, of a total value of £55, the property of James Lloyd Fountain. On the application of Sub-inspector Lipp defendants were remanded to April 23.

Goulburn Post Wednesday July 12 1995 “EL WASHO LAUNDRY

FINALIST-----1995 SMALL BUSINESS AWARD Quality and service leader

By MARYANN RODGERS The sign greeting you al El Washo when you walk in the door sums up the proprietor‘s attitude to service. It says: "Welcome to El Washo, We thank you for your custom. Please call again" The attitude is one the reasons why El Washo in Goulburn has been named as finalist in the NSW Small Business Awards. “You have to look after your customers, otherwise you won’t have them will you? Proprietor Mrs Dawn Thorn said. Another secret of EI Washo's success is to “stick with quality". "You try to cut costs but it doesn't work. You've got to stick with quality to give quality." Dawn said her husband Gordon, originally from Crookwell NSW, bought El Washo's 13 years ago. "We had the opportunity to buy El Washo 20 years ago but we didn't. It came up for sale 13 years ago and I'm glad we didn't buy it earlier because there's a lot more involved than you would think." Dawn said. "Twenty years ago I had three children and the youngest was two years old. "This business is very constant. From the time you walk in at 8am you don't stop - only w eat. We finish at 7pm and that 's five days a week. We are also open on Saturday from 8am t0 4 pm and on Sunday from 10 am until 2pm or 4pm. "We take time off when we can." "When we bought El Washo we had 10 top load washing machines stand eight dryers but times have changed. "We didn't do that many bag washes then, but around 11 years ago it began to go the other way where people would leave their washing for us to do." "Around six years ago that began to drop off a bit, so we moved into commercial work."

Heavy duty investment

El Washo washes for Goulburn hotels and motels, the hospital and nursing homes. They also wash for the abattoirs. This has meant an outlay for new, heavy duty machines capable of handling commercial laundry. Machinery at El Washo ranges from six kilo top loaders to 22 kilo front loaders. "We began investing in new machinery six years ago and each year we have purchased more," said Dawn. "The business has been growing in the last six years, especially the last two." Dawn believes service is a key ingredient in successful business. "I always like to help the customers. I like to serve them with their tokens and advise them on any washing problems. We also transfer washing from the machines to the dryers free of charge.

Professional

"Service is very important." "If you do something, you should do it right. I take a lot of care to be professional and I think you've got to be confident in what you do," she said. According to Dawn the business has grown naturally. "We just went in the direction the business took us." El Washo entered the prestigious NSW Small Business Awards on the advice of the assistant manager of the Commonwealth Bank. "I thought why not?" said Dawn. "It's a good exercise for your business." The final judging will take place on September 15, 1995. El Washo was selected from several hundred entries after being nominated on the basis of their small firm's economic growth, service and many other business factors ."Goulburn Post Monday November 20 1995

“Families in Business

Hard works pays off for Gordon and Dawn

Being a family business is the biggest asset for running El-Washo, according to co-owner Dawn Torn. Dawn and her husband Gordon have owned the El-Washo Laundry for 13 and a half years, and have lived in Goulburn for 20 years. "Being a family-owned business means you can afford to put the extra hours in, which gives us an edge over our competitors." said Dawn. El-Washo Laundry was rewarded this year for its efforts by being announced as a finalist in the NSW Small Business Awards for "achievement, initiative and Excellency." The award was a great boost for the small company, which prides itself on the quality of its work. The business offers both commercial and private washing. They do a lot of work for hotels in Goulburn, and have a contract with the abattoirs which Dawn says involves a lot of washing. The business also services washers, and has washing machines capable of handling large blankets, doonas and curtains. “We get a lot of regular customers in to do their washing as well as the big commercial loads," said Dawn. El-Washo is run by Dawn and Gordon, and employs three casual staff, with one working each day. Dawn says the business remains the same despite what the economic climate is like at the time. “Our work-load is pretty steady throughout the year, although we do get busier when it rains,' she said.” Dawn and Gordon have three children, aged 22, 29 and 31. Two of them are still living in Goulburn, although Dawn says they are still yet to show much interest in working in the business.”

GLENDA PAGETT and CARL BANFIELD:

Goulburn Post Thursday April 27, 1989

“A honeymoon in Fiji followed the recent wedding of Glena Maree Pagett and Carl Henry Banfield. Glenda is the only daughter of Mrs. Betty Pagett and the late Mr. Garry Pagett, of Crookwell NSW, and Carl is the only son of Cecil and Laura Banfield, of Grabben Gullen. St. Saviour's Cathedral, Goulburn was decorated with fresh carnations tied in bows of pink, lilac, blue and white ribbons. Music was played by soloist Melissa Heaton and organist Don Henderson. They gave a beautiful rendition of the Wedding Song and Hawaiian weddings songs as the couple left the church. Glenda was given away in marriage by her mother. The bride looked lovely in a full length white taffeta gown. The skirt extended to a train at the back. Her fitted ruched bodice was trimmed with lace and simulated pearls. Lace trimming at the "V" waistline was repeated on the hem and train of the gown. To complement her outfit, Glenda chose a hat trimmed with simulated pearls and lace motif and flowers on the brim which held in place a finger-tip length veil. A magnificent bouquet of pink anthuriums, pink gerbera, white roses, white Singapore orchids and baby's breath was carried. Attending the brie were Carla Becker as chief bridesmaid, Gillian Reeves and Desma Banfield as bridesmaids and Cherie McIntosh as flower girl. They chose rainbow colours. Carla wore pink, Gillian lilac and Desma blue. Their taffeta frocks were street length and had fitted sleeveless bodices with ruffled straps. A peplum highlighted the slight V front of the straight skirts. Flower girl Cherie wore a white taffeta gown. It had short puffed lace sleeves; lace trimmed the hem of the gown, and featured at the back was a large bow. All gowns were made by Narelle Lawler, of Goulburn. Each bridesmaid carried a bouquet of pink gerberas, white carnations, pink miniature roses and baby's breath with pink, lilac and blue ribbons, while the flower girl carried a basket of pink miniature roses, white carnations and baby's breath. Cocktail hats, in a shade which matched each bridesmaids' frock, were also worn. Carl had Brian Walkom as his best man and Paul Hegarty and Dale Robertson as groomsmen. Adam Whittaker was page boy. The reception was held at the Billabong Function Centre, for 130 guests. Highlight was the cutting of the three tiered wedding cake. Each tier was made in a clover leaf shape with coloured flowers made from icing. The cake decorations were by Mrs Iris Corkery, of Goulburn. For her travelling outfit, the bride wore a red polished cotton frock which featured a black miniature bow, peplum waist and a straight skirt with a bow at the back. Black accessories were added. On their return from the honeymoon in Fiji, Mr. and Mrs. Banfield have made their home at Grabben Gullen.”

Children of GLENDA PAGETT and CARL BANFIELD are: i. DANIEL JAMES 8 BANFIELD, b. 03 Nov 1994, Canberra ACT.

Crookwell NSW Gazette 23.9.1997\ "Born on the roadside”

Father delivers baby on Federal Highway on freezing night A local woman, Mrs Glenda Banfield of Grabben Gullen, gave birth to a baby while being driven to Canberra by her husband on the Federal Highway. The child was delivered by the father on the roadside and it was after he had sought and obtained help at a Caltex service station that, upon being asked if it was a boy or a girl, that he came back and realized it was a beautiful baby girl. "It was a Monday night and I had returned home to Grabben Gullen, where I had taken my son Daniel for a visit to my mother," recalls Mrs Banfield. "Unexpectedly, I started feeling twinges of pain and told Carl that the baby could be coming." The couple immediately called John James Hospital in Canberra, were Mrs Banfield had been treated recently. "I told Glenda not to panic and don't hurry," said Carl. "We left at about a quarter past seven and drove through Gunning. But Glenda told him her contractions had become pretty strong and frequent. At Gundaroo she said she felt the baby was coming." While they were driving up the Federal Highway, at some distance from the Caltex service station, Carl had to stop. "The head had arrived," said Carl, whose experience as a farmer came into play. At first, he tried to signal to a car to stop, "but it was far too dark and the car was going to fast for the driver to have noticed me. When I came back to the car, Glenda was having the baby on the front seat." So, he immediately intervened and delivered his child by himself. "I was quite anxious as to the health of my wife and baby, as it was a freezing night. The Caltex service station was just up the road, so I rushed there and told the man at the counter, "My wife just had a baby." It was hard for him to believe and I had to say that twice before he realized what was happening," said Carl. "Out from nowhere came a lady from the restaurant. She asked me was it a boy or a girl and I said I had not thought of that," said Carl. "The lady just happened to be the Sydney Hilton Hotel's occupational health and safety coordinator, a trained nurse. The out of nowhere, like the lady, came a doctor who happened to be an anaesthetist specialized in difficult neo-natal deliveries," said Carl. Then, improvisation on the roadside became the order of the day on that cold night on Monday August 25. The Banfield car was driven to the service station where the placenta was placed in a plastic shopping bag, the baby was wrapped up as much as possible to protect her (Carl had checked: it was a girl!) and the umbilical chord was tied with a shoelace volunteered by one of the service station female employees. But the cord was not cut until the arrival of the ambulance at the service station. Fortunately, no complications were noted after they reached the hospital. But Lyn, the Sydney nurse who had helped the couple in difficulty, discovered when she arrived home that someone had broken into her house. It was a happy family that the Gazette met on the Banfield property at Grabben Gullen on Saturday, with son, Daniel, 3 years old, and being proud of having a new sister and Carl and Glenda, spending most of their time nursing the healthy and strong baby girl they have named Alice."
