Leonard Family Migrate The family of Thomas Leonard and Julia Kelly were born in Ballynakill near Woodford, County Galway. It is likely that Thomas and Julia both died before 1863. It was a poor, overcrowded district, the principal landlord being Lords Clanricarde, who over generations began enclosing their estates for grazing, resulting in many evictions of tenants and emigration during the 1830s and later. It was a disaffected district with much rebellious activity conducted by “Whiteboys” against landlords. Other Crookwell district families which came from Woodford, County Galway area were the Tully’s, Fahys and Brodericks.The Tully and Broderick families who were here at an early period and no doubts their reports encouraged the Leonard family to migrate, in fact they were to sponsor many family members to emigrate from Ireland. In fact Patrick Leonard sponsored his sister the widow Catherine Fahy and her five children and helped them make a start at Grabben Gullen. James, Margaret and Patrick's Leonard's arrived in Sydney on the ship "Loyds".Patrick was a widower whose wife had died in Ireland. He was accompanied by two children, daughter Ann aged 12 years and son Patrick aged 10 years. He married Margaret McCabe in 1860 and had a large family. Perhaps the most hated landlord in Ireland in the last two decades of the 19th century was Hubert de Burgh (Burke), the second Marquis of Clanricarde. His domain was awesome in size. It consisted of 52, 600 acres, embracing estates in Loughrea, Portumna, Mellick, Woodford, Kilmore, Craughwell, Derrybrien and Crossmacrena. It yielded an annual income of £20,793. His father, Ulick John de Burgh, had staunchly defended the interests of the landlord class during the Great Famine. In its aftermath, his land agents promoted the assisted emigration of his tenants. Between 1841 and 1871, the population of the Clanricarde estates in Galway fell from nearly 22, 000 to under 10,000. MICHAEL 2 LEONARD (UNKNOWN MALE 1) was born 1807 in Woodford Ballynakill Galway Ireland. He married BRIDGET CONROY. MICHAEL LEONARD : In the early 1800's in the Catholic parish of Woodford there lived Michael Leonard, a blacksmith, who married Bridget Conroy. The parish also records a Malachai Leonard married to Maria Mullen and Johannus Leonard married to Sian/Shelag (?) Hayes. Michael Leonard relationship to Malachi & Johannus is unknown. All have children baptised at Woodford in the period 1820 - 1840 or so. The first known emigrant is Michael Leonard daughter Mary who arrives Dec 1849 on the 'Sarah' in Sydney. Her name was mispelt as “Lennond” Shipping Intelligance The ship, tonnage 729, Master Wilson, sailed 28th August 1849 from whence, Plymouth to Port Jackson, 10th December 1849 “SARAH ” Then the 'Lloyds' arrives 29/6/1850. On board are three of Thomas & Julia Leonards' children: Patrick aged 35, Margaret 21 and James 19. Patrick's wife Bridget is dead and he has with him his older children Patrick 12 and Thomas 10. Back in Woodford another sister Catherine has married Samuel Fahy. Also on board this ship is a Francis Fahy aged 22 of Woodford son of Thomas & Catherine Fahy both deceased. He married (2) MARGARET MCCABE 03 May 1860 in Goulburn NSW, daughter of PATRICK MCCABE and MARGARET. She was born 1838 in Donegal Co Cavan, Ireland, and died 11 Apr 1902 in Mummel NSW. Margaret remarried 1878 in Goulburn to JACOB WEBB a widower. Sydney Morning Herald Shipping Intelligence Monday, 1 July 1950, p.2 – Arrivals: June 29 - Lloyds, barque, 403 tons, Captain Pearson, from Plymouth, the 19th March. Passengers - Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Abraham, and servant, Mr. and Mrs. Clark, Mr. Cary, 198 immigrants and Dr. Davidson, Surgeon Superintendant. The Lloyds made good passage from Plymouth of 102 days. She brings out 198 emigrants English, Scotch, and Irish, consisting of 18 married couples, 58 single men, 52 single women, 27 boys, and 21 girls under 14 years of age, one male, and three female infants. MIGRATION Patrick Leonard arrived on the "Lloyds" 29 June 1850 with his son Patrick and Thomas. His sister Margaret Leonard was on board the "Lloyds' as well. Witness to Patrick's marriage in Goulburn were James Leonard and Elizabeth McCabe. MARGARET MCCABE: Migration. On the ship " Alfred ' 6th January 1860. On board were Charles McCabe age 38, labourer, Cavan, his wife Ann 28 and their son Francis aged 2; Widowers on embarkation included Patrick McCabe 55, farmer labourer, Cavan and his daughter Margaret 22 years. LEONARD, Patrick Goulburn Herald, Sat 14.9.1878 DEATH BY DROWNING Mr. Patrick Leonard, an old and much respected resident of Mummel, was drowned on Wednesday while crossing the Wollondilly at Baw Baw. Owing to the recent rains the river was very high, and the crossing dangerous. Mr. Leonard came into Goulburn on Wednesday with a horse and cart to make some purchases in connection with the marriage of his daughter to Mr. Dennis Kenny (which event was to have taken place the following day), and was returning to his home at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Mrs Cole, who lives near the Baw Baw crossing, is said to have seen Mr. Leonard fording the river and the cart upset as he was near the opposite bank. A rope was procured, but on returning to the spot neither Mr. Leonard nor the horse and cart were visible. A parcel which was in the cart was picked up a short distance from the ford. Continuous search has been since made; but up to a late hour last evening the searchers had not succeeded in finding Leonard's body. The horse and cart were found on Thursday about 400 yards from the spot at which Leonard entered the river. Goulburn Herald, Wednesday 18.9.1878 DROWNED IN THE WOLLONDILLY An inquest was held by the district coroner, Mr. A M Betts, at Mummel, on Sunday last on view of the body of Patrick Leonard. John Cole, farmer at Baw Baw, stated that on last Wednesday afternoon he saw deceased driving a spring cart in Clinton Street; he appeared to have been on his way home and to have turned back for something he had forgotten; two hours afterwards he heard he was drowned. Isabella Cole, wife of last witness, saw deceased crossing the river, and noticed that when approaching the opposite bank the horse appeared to be unable to take the cart out; he seemed to get against the bank at a place where it was very steep and a little below the proper crossing; the current turned the horse down the river and carried the horse and cart down the stream; Leonard remained in the cart and was carried by the stream out of sight behind the bank; when again seen the cart was upside down and Leonard had disappeared; the horse was on its back struggling in the water; it was about 3 o'clock in the afternoon; the river was high; persons had crossed on horseback in the morning, but none in the afternoon, when the river had risen very quickly and was too high to cross safely; in going into Goulburn in the morning deceased probably crossed the river lower down at Mr. Rossi's. George Slater, saddler, Goulburn, assisted Trooper Pritzler in searching and dragging for the body which was found on Saturday evening in the large waterhole opposite Mr. Harris's, a mile below the Baw Baw crossing-place; the body was not disfigured.
