  • Se Non E Vero, E Molto Ben Trovato Issue 440 March 2020 $2
Se Non E Vero, E Molto Ben Trovato Issue 440 March 2020 $2 Community news for Wollombi, Laguna and surrounding districts 1 Issue 440 - Our Own News – March 2020 View from the Ridge Top - Is it 1929 all over again?! Monthly Rainfall in the Wollombi Valley Source: BoM Climate Data (2019), Ridgetop Consulting (2020) Monthly rainfall for the Wollombi Valley is highlighted above for years 1928, 1929, 2019 and 2020 (includes a 200mm conservative guesstimate for February 2020). Detailed analysis of rainfall ahead of three key bushfire periods was undertaken for 1929, 1993/4 and 2019/20. In all key fire events, there was very limited Spring rainfall followed by delayed Summer rains. In 1929, this late Summer rain arrived in a major rain event that began on 6th February. This was after the terrible bushfires of 1929 (reported in last month’s OON). In 1994 (not shown), the rains arrived in the January and a more reasonable amount in February. On average, the most rainfall arrives during Summer hence it was reasonable to predict the strong wet end to our current Summer. It was the prolonged period of limited rain that likely helped extend the recent fire activity. Interestingly as February 2020 rainfall unfolds it appears we are following the pattern for 1929 (including relevance of 6th February) unless even more rain arrives and then an event like the 1949 flood beckons! Next month we will explore flooding events in the Valley. If anyone has any access to detailed historical flood information for Wollombi please let the author know.

WATER COMPLIANCE REPORT 2018 - 2019 Water Year Water Report 2018 - 2019 1 ABOUT THIS REPORT COMPLYING WITH Since the Snowy Scheme’s completion in 1974, Snowy Hydro Limited has carefully managed the water that flows through the Scheme’s dams, tunnels, aqueducts and power stations in accordance with our OUR LICENCE water licence. This report outlines how we are managing the water that flows through the Scheme. Snowy Hydro complied with all of the requirements imposed upon the company under the Snowy Hydro operates a complex hydro-electric scheme utilising the water captured by the Scheme Snowy Water Licence during the 2018 - 19 water year, including each water release target to generate energy to meet the market’s needs, while also moving water from east to west to support relating to: irrigation districts. ● The Required Annual Release to the River Murray catchment. Each year, we have to reach certain targets for downstream and environmental water releases. Snowy ● The Required Annual Release to the Murrumbidgee River catchment. Hydro has operational flexibility day-to-day to strategically manage our generation and water releases while at the same time giving long-term security to the downstream users around annual water releases. ● Environmental releases into the Snowy River from Jindabyne Dam. In the Snowy Scheme, water releases and electricity generation are inseparably linked. ● Environmental releases into the Murrumbidgee River from Tantangara Dam. ● Environmental releases into the Goodradigbee River from Goodradigbee Aqueduct. The following staff in Fisheries NSW who worked on the project and made it possible; John Pursey, Dean Gilligan, Trevor Daly, Allan Lugg, Sarah Fairfull, Justin Stanger, Tim McGarry, Martin Asmus, Matthew McLellan, Lachie Jess and Antonia Creese. I thank the Recreational Fishing Trust for their ongoing support and funding for the Macquarie Perch captive breeding program; without it there would not be fish to stock into the refuge site. I would also like to acknowledge the Central Acclimatisation Society, in particular Karl Schaerf and Peter Byron for their ongoing support of the project and threatened native fish. Over the year the leadership of our organization has changed with a new joint CEO in Gary Fry, and myself stepping up as the new chair of the board. The board has also changed with Julian Harris and Nick Bearlin-Allardice departing whilst Michelle Walker, and Mark Caddey have joined. Louise Johnston, and Sharyn Wilson continue to kindly give their time and considerable experience to round out the board with our organisation’s stalwart founder Sue Lennox. Behind the scenes the board has looked to strengthen our procedures and governance in line with the new regulations laid down by the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission. Fortunately our existing approach was already well in order, so this is more of a minor revision than major changes that other organisations have faced with respect to this.
