The BUS TRIP to explore some local agricultural ventures and features has been organised for SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER. These visits will show what the local area has to offer, and we will be accompanied on the bus by David Hilhorst from the Braidwood Local Land Services Office and other local experts who will talk about plants, trees, soil and wildlife. WINDELLAMA We will set off from Windellama Hall at 9.30 am (be there at 9 am). We will visit Tarago Truffles, the Tarago Worm Farm and an example of erosion control. Morning tea and lunch will be provided and there is no charge. We will return to Windellama Hall at 4.30 pm. Places are filling up on the bus, so please let us know by 7 September if you would like to come – contact details below. If you would like to participate in future Landcare activities - busy bees, talks, inspections, farm/tree walks – this will be a chance to learn about these and other activities of Windellama Landcare. Later in the year we will have some working bees on local properties or on public areas, so if you are inspired by the bus trip, you might wish to come to one of our busy bees too. See the flyer about the bus trip elsewhere in the Windellama news. JOINING LANDCARE If you are interested in joining the local Windellama Landcare Group or you would like to come to one of our working bees, please call Tony or Sandra Greville on 0418 412 460 or Irene Turner on 02 4844 5214 or John Pearce on 02 4844 5244. Annual membership of Windellama Landcare is $10.00 per family. Busy bees begin at 9:30 am with a cuppa. Morning tea and lunch are provided. Children are very welcome too at our working bees AND BUS TRIPS! You will learn about tackling some of the land management issues of our sensitive soils. It is also a great social activity – meeting local people while learning about our unique local area. AND ANOTHER THING Have you seen Carina Clarke’s collection of articles she wrote for the Windellama news? They have been brought together in a two-volume set – called Wild Windellama. The articles cover just about everything about the flora and fauna of the area – birds, animals, water creatures, flowers, trees and shrubs – many unique to Windellama. If you are interested in obtaining a set, call one of the numbers above. The set of two volumes is $10.00. Windellama SES First Aid & CFR There has been very little activity for us during the month, fortunately. We have some members away this weekend 19th participating in a large animal rescue course. SES does branch out into various fields. The "sniffer" dog team is also coming back into action. We are fortunate, in as much, that we have over the past few months, had some new YOUNG members join us. Just a reminder once again, that we are holding an open day on the 17th of November. Please be aware of the very welcome Police activity in our region. Maybe they just might find a few of the people who do not respect the double white lines on our roads. I may have found a flower colour that the bowerbird doesn't like as my iris reticula which are purple have been left alone along with some purple crocus. Aphids have been a pest on the brassicas all winter despite the deep frosts. Happy gardening and our next meeting will be on 19th of September with a visit to Merribee homestead near Terrara. Meet at the Nerriga Hall 8-45am to car pool and then on to Merribee arriving around 10-00am or shortly after. This will be a self catering event with some food available at Merribee. September in Your Garden By Irene Turner It not too late to add compost or well decomposed animal manure to both your vegetables and flower gardens. VEGETABLES SEED; Carrot, parsnips, before sowing the seed, mix sand or seed raising mixture through the soil to a depth of 10mm. Sow your seed water then cover the rows with hessian or potato bags, it helps the surface stay moist and not dry out as quickly and the seed will germinate more evenly. Remove bags when seed starts to germinate. Lettuce, silver beet, onions, radish, kohlrabi, beetroot and peas can all be sown now. Cabbage; such as sugarloaf and superette is worth growing as they make a good cabbage in salads and coleslaw. Potatoes; in our climate, planting is from September to December as soon as the worst of the frost are over. The tubers (or seed potatoes) are planted 15cm deep and 75 cm apart, apply a general fertilizer at the rate of a good handful below the tubers per running metre. FLOWERS; Plant seedlings of viola, verbena, dianthus, carnations, stock, wallflower, dwarf sweet William, nemesia, polyanthus and for that early summer display petunias and phlox. The bulbs of gladioli can now be planted. They like a garden containing compost and plenty of sun and good drainage. Plant the bulbs 12cm deep in heavy soil, or 20cm deep in sandy soil. Gladioli from time of planting takes about 90days to flower, spread the planting 10-14 days apart and you will have continued the flowering time. Chrysanthemums; Become available in the nursey. Cutting can be taken now, also well established clumps can also be divided during September. Chrysanthemums will grow in almost any type of soil, but avoid animal manure. Compost is beneficial to the plants plus plenty of sun and good drainage. Remove frost-damaged plant sections as soon as you`re sure frosts are finished for the year. Finish pruning all your winter-flowering shrubs. Divide and plant out perennials. Feed all those shrubs that are getting ready to flower through the summer months.

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News Cake Auction Saturday 11th August What a great day on Saturday August 11th. We had visitors from as far away as Sydney and Yass attend our cake auction at the Windellama Progress Hall, where all monies raised are to suport the Goulburn Can-Assist group. The cakes and goodies on offer were a treat to behold and the two youngsters Ruby and Mardie did an excellent job in showcasing the auction items to the attendees that were in a joyful mood. The Auctioneer, Graeme Welsh soon had the patronage digging deep, with a Pavlova on offer making at least $250.00. Overall, $3,247.00 was the auction result that exceeded last year’s result by $499.00. This amount does not include the donations, canteen or trash and treasure stall. Overall, a great effort. Well done to everyone who attended the auction. A big THANKYOU for all the auction items donated and special thanks to all those who helped. The Can-Assist raffle was drawn and the lucky winners were First Prize – Ruth from Can-Assist, Second Prize – Carol from Goulburn and Third Prize – Craig R. August Rainfall Slippery Dip History The last 5 years at our place in August have seen rain falls of 120.5mm in 2014, 97mm in 2015, 53.75mm in 2016, 34.25 in 2017 and this year so far Saturday 18th – 16.5mm. This history indecates that we are on a giant slippery dip going down, down, down, with less and less rainfall each August. Maybe the result of climate change? Let’s all hope that this trend stops, and the heavens open-up and it teems down. Road Carnage With the big dry we are suffering from and our paddocks as bare as the roads going past our places. Please keep your eyes open for the natives on the road sides and those wandering onto the road. More than likely cattle will be a problem too, with them also looking for something to eat. My main concern is the damage created when you hit one of these animals, not only to your transport and occupants but of course yourself. BE EXTRA ALERT, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN – TAKE CARE! Pruning At our place the grape vines have been pruned but the roses are still to be done. Every time we go to prune the roses we have a big frost or the winds are howling across the flats. The general consenses in our location are to prune roses in August and a lite tidy-up prune in January. Bare rooted Peach Tree Planting At our last meeting at Sandy's place we looked at how to plant a bare rooted peach tree. After trimming the damaged roots I only pruned the top by a third. If it was my tree, more would have been pruned from the top. The reason why the damaged roots are pruned is to help eliminate disease problems and the top is pruned to help minimise transplant shock and to balance the tree up with the trimmed root spread. All Sandy has to do now is keep the moisture up to it. Mulching Sandy has her timing right and has been busy in her garden spreading a composted mulch over all her gardens and also installing garden timber edges – looking good. Watch Out Light fingers are about. Recently 2 large chainsaws were removed from a shed. If possible, keep equipment storage sheds locked. Our next club meeting will be on Thursday the 23rd August. Details on 48447061. Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

Page 20 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - September 2018 THE INCREDIBLE ECHIDNA! By Kay Muddiman – Publicity/Media Officer Echidnas are monotremes (mammals that lay eggs). Only three species of monotreme exist in the world, those being the platypus and two species of echidna, one of which (the Long-beaked Echidna) is restricted to the New Guinea highlands. Our Aussie echidna is the Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus). We are now at the time of year when echidnas are much more visible than usual, as at the end of winter and early spring they wake from their winter hibernation and become active – searching for food, and particularly a mate! Echidnas travel long distances and may travel through your property or yard. Many calls received by WIRES are regarding echidnas that have 'dug' themselves in, and do not seem to want to move on. If you approach an echidna it defends itself the only way it can, by digging into the ground and this happens whenever it feels insecure or in danger. It may also roll itself into a ball or cling on to any surface it can. If you come across an echidna and it is not injured please leave it alone, do not approach it and do not attempt to contain it. In most circumstances you do not Top: An echidna in the bush at Mummel. (By need to call WIRES. We try to never relocate any healthy Kay Muddiman) Bottom: A puggle starting to get fur. (By echidna as it risks them losing their scent trail or leaving Robyn Cartwright) young unattended in the burrow. Echidnas have a type of inbuilt GPS which we don’t want to interrupt. The best thing to do in this situation is for everyone to simply leave the area for a period of time, allowing the echidna to make its own way. If you have a pet please keep it contained well away from the animal, and you will find that the echidna will move away as soon as it is sure it is out of danger, and feels secure. If you come across an echidna crossing a road the best course of action is not to approach it - if you do they will curl up and burrow in or cling on and then they may not move for some time (placing it in even more danger). Just allow the echidna to make its own way off the road. Any echidna injured by cars must be taken to a veterinary clinic and X-rayed. It is impossible to examine these animals properly without X-ray as you cannot feel broken bones as in other animals. Please call WIRES immediately on 1300 094737 for further advice and assistance and please take note of the exact location of the collision. Never try to relocate any echidna. Female echidnas can have young (referred to as puggles) in burrows that they leave alone while they go out to forage for food and it is critical that they are able to return. If they are ‘rescued’ or contained by well-meaning people while they are away from their young it can leave a young puggle to starve to death in the burrow. If you should find a young echidna with no spines or very few, please call WIRES immediately and ensure it is kept cool until help has arrived.

(Continued on page 22)

Windellama News– September 2018 www.windellama.com.au Page 21

(Continued from page 21) Please never ever use a shovel to try and lift any echidna as it most often results in broken toes and spines. INTERESTING ECHIDNA FACTS Between two to three weeks after mating, a single rubbery-skinned egg is laid directly into the folds of the female’s skin which form a backward facing pouch. This ‘pouch’ develops three days before the laying of the egg. After 10 days, the egg hatches with the young using an ‘egg tooth,’ which is later discarded, to break the shell. The newborn echidna is blind, without spines and remains in the pouch. The mother does not have teats, instead the thick milk is secreted from patches of skin within the pouch and the puggle slurps the milk from the mother’s skin. While the puggle is spineless, the mother uses a burrow as a safe haven except for her foraging time. When the puggle begins to develop spines, at about 50 days of age, it is ejected from the pouch and is left in the safety of the burrow. Once the puggle has been ejected from the pouch, the mother’s pouch retracts and the area where the milk is exuded is accessed by the puggle as it lies on its back and the mother stands above it. Once the puggle is spined, the mother’s milk changes to an extremely high fat, rich formula that can sustain the puggle for up to 10 days whilst the mother forages. The puggle grows rapidly and gradually decreases its need for milk until it weans at between 6-8 months of age. The young echidna’s spines are well developed by the time it leaves the burrow and accompanies its mother. Echidnas cannot tolerate temperatures above 30 degrees. Echidnas are good swimmers, paddling with only the snout and a few spines above the water. They do not fight or defend a territory. When an echidna encounters another echidna or other animal, it basically just ignores it. An echidna’s sex cannot be determined without a probe, which is inserted into the vent to determine gender. Male testes are located internally. The echidna has a long tongue - around 18cm - that can whip in and out of its mouth at incredible speeds. This helps the echidna forage for ants and termites. Two types of fur cover the echidna’s body. A coat of short, coarse hair insulates them from the cold, while longer hairs act as spines, protecting them from predators. Their sharp spines are around 50mm in length and are composed of keratin, the same material that makes up our fingernails. An echidna does not have ear flaps like we do. Its ears are large, vertical slits just behind the eyes. This external opening is slightly hidden behind the cover of spines. The internal bone structure of the ear is arranged so that the slightest vibrations from the ground pass through the body directly to the bones in the middle ear and then onto the inner ear receptors. So sensitive is their hearing ability it is believed echidnas can sense vibrations emitted by termites and ants working underground. Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring the WIRES Rescue Number 1300 094737. Your call will be logged and directed to the appropriate branch electronically when, as always, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist. Until next time – take care, Kay

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com Denzil & Anne Sturgiss were kind enough to again invite our local Willowglen Gardeners to visit their Tarago Truffle farm- it was the same time last year that we had such a wonderful experience there. After some rain overnight, the day dawned with icy winds and no rain (hopefully there will be some more rain soon). Before our truffle hunt we all had morning tea and a chat about our recent garden experiences. Wazza & all horses recently celebrated their birthday on the same day, congratulations. Wazza said they have had only 274 mls of rain in the 7 months to end of July. He showed us how secateurs can bruise stems of roses when pruning so cut with sharp side down & prune by August in our region. A local wombat torments their poor dog & eats everything in the garden. Denise has planted lots of veggies in the veggie baths including cabbages, spinach, lettuce and lots of asparagus crowns she was given, and she is about to divide up her rhubarb crowns and replant. Her mother- in-law's tongue was killed by frost - so much for being indestructible. Roos are eating Denise's grevilleas which is unusual but there's no other food around. Everyone agreed that because of a short period of warmer weather spring had made a false early arrival, with spring birds coming in & buds on trees, but more severe winter chills are killing everything green off again. Irene fertilised her cabbages and after some rain they are jumping out of the ground but Lloyd has had to fix the washing machine & outside loo because of pipes freezing & bursting from extreme frost. Kevin said his father used to cover asparagus (sprinkle heavily) with coarse butcher's salt which kills weeds as well as helping the asparagus and then fed them with manure - they are heavy feeders, then mulch. To harvest, cut the stalks 6" underground. Much to Margaret's dismay, Kevin's sheep pruned her pots although she had already pruned them. Kevin said that possums are eating white cedar despite the fact that it's toxic to other animals such as pigs. Linda is desperate for rain because she is very low on water and can't look after all her plants. The irises Joy had given out a while ago Peter H had potted and now that they are all grown up, Peter has been planting them out along the side fence at the front of our Blue Mountains home (a much better idea than the ivy and straggly vines running along there previously). Peter was (Continued on page 25)

(Continued from page 23) told to make sure tubers are not buried underground and to mulch them. After our warming coffee, Denzil led us through the blizzard to their Trufferie, where everyone, dogs & all, swished through the foot bath before we entered because no dirt, mud or alien germs are allowed onto the Trufferie. Tree roots need sun & frost with an open canopy between trees, and a sprinkler for each tree - truffles especially need moisture during autumn. Denzil told us the soil needs to be PH 8 and truffles need cold kilojoules to ripen - 6 or 8 heavy frosts in a row produce sweet truffles. On to the hunt! After Dusty the dog has indicated a truffle, Denzil digs carefully with a small implement (knife or spoon) so as not to damage the truffle. The truffle smells earthy but surprisingly also sweet. Two of our group, Denise & Jude were game enough to get down on their hands and knees (bums in air) to patiently dig out truffles indicated by Dusty once verified by Denzil. This year Denzil expects to have harvested 100kg of truffles before the season ends when the frost finishes (that's a lot of punishment to the knees and all in icy cold weather). With frozen fingers and chattering teeth, (despite being rugged up in many many layers) we forced our way back headlong into the wild wind - what a day. After our lunch (Anne’s delicious soup, accompanied by truffle salt, grated fresh truffles over the soup, grated peccorino and bread with truffle butter) Anne talked to us in the Truffle Shed about how she cleans, dries, grades & packs the truffles. Anne said that the best truffles are round and not soft (referred to as black diamonds). She advised us the best way to keep truffles between uses is to wrap them in paper towelling, place in a sealed container and store in fridge at minus 4oC (many of us get this temperature overnight outside the back door), changing the paper towelling daily due to the moisture. Our heads were full of the delicious aroma of these black truffles – much sweeter than the truffle farm we had been to in Provence a few years ago and to think this interesting experience is right on our very doorstep. Thank you to our friendly hosts, Anne & Denzil, for your warmth, hospitality & generosity. We really appreciated this opportunity and highly recommend this fun experience to you all. The Truffle Festival is still on around the Canberra region until the end of August www.trufflefestival.com.au . Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4th September at 10am at Lloyd & Irene Turner's home, 95 Roberts Road Windellama. Liz-Ann
